was slain in the war. In his reign Babylas of Antioch and Flavianus of Rome and Alexander of Jerusalem and Dionysius of Alexandria were martyred, and Novatus apostatized from the church, and Celsaeus the heresiarch became known. And after Decius, Aemilianus reigned for 1 year, and was slain in the palace. And after Aemilianus, Gallianus reigned for 3 years, and was slain in war. In his reign Artemius and Synepon the heresiarchs became known, and Gregory the Wonderworker, the disciple of Origen, flourished. And after Gallianus, Claudius reigned for 2 years. And after Claudius, Quintilianus reigned for 7 days. And after Quintilianus, Aurelian reigned for 5 years, and 34 was slain by a chamberlain. In his reign also the holy Chariton confessed, and Manes, the abominable and thrice-accursed, arose, the demonic one fashioning himself as Christ and the Holy Spirit. And a certain Paul, a contemporary of this Manes, by birth a Samosatene, and president of great Antioch, blasphemed that the Lord was a mere man. Then a certain Apollinarius arose, president of Laodicea in Syria, who said that the Lord had assumed flesh animated by a living soul, but without a mind. After him a certain Theodore appeared, who had obtained the leadership of the city of Mopsuestia in Cilicia, who called the master Christ one of us common men, and that he received by progress and by grace the name of God, and that by his baptism in the Jordan river he was deemed worthy of the grace of the Holy Spirit, so that, forsooth, the Word of God, having dwelt in him because of his surpassing virtue, imparted to him divine dignity and worship afterwards, after his perfection. And after him Nestorius from Germanicia of Syria, having seized the throne of Constantinople, who, following his ancestors (for he was the son of the Cilician, and a descendant of the Samosatene), denied that our all-holy lady was the Theotokos, dogmatizing according to his paternal error that Christ was one person and the Word of God another. Then Eutyches, who denied that two natures were preserved in Christ after their union. Then a certain one called Severus, having seized the throne of Antioch. And others in succession. 35 And after Aurelian, Tacitus reigned for 6 months, and was slain by friends of Aurelian. And after Tacitus, Florianus reigned for 2 months, and was slain by Probus. And after Florianus, Probus reigned for 6 years, and was slain by Carus. And after Probus, Carus reigned for 1 year, and was slain by Carinus. And after Carus, his son Carinus reigned for 2 years, and was slain by Numerian. And after Carinus, his brother Numerian reigned for 1 year, and having been captured by the Persians, he was flayed while still alive. And after Numerian, Diocletian and his son-in-law Maximian reigned together for 22 years. By them a great persecution was stirred up against the Christians, when also Peter of Alexandria and Anthimus of Nicomedia and Procopius and Theodore the renowned were martyred and very many others, and Sabbatius who strengthened the heresy of the Quartodecimans became known. Whom the divine justice, having justly pursued, rightly cut off; and Diocletian, his tongue having rotted along with his throat, and having boiled up with a multitude of worms, wretchedly and violently broke off his life, while Maximian hanged himself. And after Diocletian and Maximian, at the same times reigned Constantius and Severus, Maximinus and 36 Maxentius. And Constantius with his son Constantine held Gaul and Britain, and Severus and Maxentius held Rome, and Maximinus the East, who, having committed many abominable and wicked things, displayed a harsh and inhuman persecution against the Christians, in which very many of the renowned were martyred. And he suffered things worthy of his impiety; for having fallen into a most terrible disease, so that his flesh melted like wax and his bones were roasted together and the character of his human form vanished and he rotted terribly, and such a stench
