we have received. But nevertheless, before he was baptized, it did not descend; nor indeed did John cause it to descend. Why then does this happen? So that you may learn that the priest fulfills a symbol. No man is so far distant from another man as John is from Jesus; but nevertheless the Spirit descended upon him, so that you may learn that God works all, that God does all. I wish to say something paradoxical, but do not be amazed nor be troubled. What then is this? The offering is the same, whether an ordinary person offers it, or Paul, or Peter; it is the same which Christ gave to the disciples, and which the priests now make; this is in no way less than that, because men do not sanctify this one either, but He Himself who also sanctified that one. For just as the words which God spoke are the same which the priest even now says; so also the offering is the same, and the baptism which he gave. Thus the whole is of Faith. The spirit leaped at once upon Cornelius, since he had first shown the things from himself, and brought forth faith. And this, therefore, is the body, and that one too; but he who thinks this one is less than that one, does not know that Christ is present even now, and is at work even now. Knowing these things, therefore (for not simply have all these things been said to us, but that we might correct your opinion, and make you safer for the future), show great observance of the things that have been said. But if we are always hearing, but never doing, there will be no 62.613 benefit for us from the things being said. Let us therefore pay attention 62.613 carefully, let us pay attention to what was said with care, let us write them upon our 62.614 mind, let us have them always engraved on our conscience and continually send up glory to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit.
HOMILY 10. Hold the pattern of sound words which you have heard from me, in faith and love which is in Christ Jesus; guard the good deposit through the Holy Spirit who dwells in us. You know this, that all those in Asia have turned away from me; of whom are Phygelus and Hermogenes. May the Lord grant mercy to the household of Onesiphorus, because he often refreshed me, and my chain he was not
ashamed of, but when he was in Rome he sought me out more diligently, and found me. May the Lord grant to him to find mercy from the Lord in that day. And how many things
he served in Ephesus, you know better. 1. Not only through letters did he set out for the disciple the things to be done, but now also through words. And this he made clear in many places and in other ways, saying: Whether by word, or by letter, as by us; but much more so here too. Let us not think, therefore, that the things concerning the teaching have been spoken deficiently; for he also delivered many things to him unwritten; which things, therefore, reminding him, he said: Hold the pattern of sound words which you have heard from me. And what is it that he says? Just as painters do, he says, I have impressed on you an image of virtue and of all things pleasing to God, laying down a certain rule and archetype and standard in your soul. Hold these things, therefore; and if it is necessary to deliberate about faith, or about love, or about self-control, take your examples from there; you will not need to seek an image from others, since all things are laid down there. Guard the good deposit. How? Through the Holy Spirit who dwells in us. For it is not of a human soul nor of power, having been entrusted with so many things, to be sufficient for
