First Title. -Concerning the eternal divinity of the holy and consubstantial Trinity; and
that God is one and alone over all. God said: Let us make man in our image, and after our likeness. God said: Behold, Adam has become as one of us. Come, let us go down and confound their language, that they may not understand one another's speech. Hear, O Israel: The Lord your God is one Lord. See that I am, and there is no God besides me. 95.1072 Who is God except our Lord, or who is God besides our God? By the word of the Lord the heavens were established, and by the spirit of his mouth all their host. But God is our king from of old. There is none like you among the gods, O Lord, and there is nothing like your works. Lord, you have been our refuge, in generation and generation. Your kingdom is a kingdom of all ages and the rest. In the year that King Uzziah died, I saw the Lord sitting upon a throne, high and lifted up, and the house was full of his glory. And Seraphim stood round about him; each one had six wings; and with two they covered their faces, and with two they covered their feet, and with two they flew. And one cried to another, and said: Holy, holy, holy, is the Lord of Sabaoth; the whole earth is full of his glory. I am God the first, and for the things to come, I am. Know, and believe me, and understand that I am; before me there was no other God, and after me there will be none. I am God, and there is no savior besides me. Thus says the Lord, God the king of Israel, and he that delivered him, the Lord of Sabaoth. I am the first, and I am after these things, and besides me there is no God. Who is like me? Let him stand, and call, and declare, and prepare for me, since I made man for the age, and the things that are coming before they come, let him declare to me. I am the Lord God, my glory I will not give to another, nor my virtues to graven images. The Lord is true, the God of the living, and king of the ages. This is our God, no other shall be accounted of in comparison with him. His kingdom is an everlasting kingdom, and his authority is from generation to generation. And when the Lord was baptized, he went up immediately from the water. And behold, the heavens were opened to him, and he saw the Spirit of God descending as a dove, and coming upon him. And behold, a voice from heaven, saying: This is my Son, in whom I am well pleased. But Stephen, being full of the Holy Spirit, looked up steadfastly into heaven and saw the glory of God, and Jesus standing at the right hand of God, and said: Behold, I see the heavens opened, and the Son of man standing at the right hand of God. There is no God but one. For there are so-called gods, 95.1073 whether in heaven or on earth, but for us there is one God the Father, from whom are all things, and we for him; and one Lord Jesus Christ, through whom are all things, and we through him; and one Holy Spirit, in whom are all things, and we from him. Running through all things, and soaring in your thoughts above all creation, raising your mind beyond, consider the divine nature: standing immutable, unchangeable, impassible, simple, uncompounded, indivisible; unapproachable light, ineffable power, unlimited magnitude, outshining glory, desirable goodness, a beauty incomprehensible that mightily touches the wounded soul, yet is impossible to declare worthily in speech. There is the Father, there the Son, there the Holy Spirit, the uncreated nature, the sovereign dignity, the natural goodness; the Father, the beginning of all things, the cause of being for all that exists, the root of the living. from whom came forth the fount of life, the wisdom, the power, the exact image of the invisible God, the Son begotten of the Father, the living Word, who is God, and was with God; not having come to be in addition, existing before the ages; not acquired afterwards; Son, not a possession; maker, not a thing made; creator, but not a creature; being all things that are
