the working of virtues, practice is the architectonic. 132 11, 30 From the fruit of righteousness grows a tree of life; but the souls of the lawless are taken away untimely This tree of life is that which was planted in the middle of paradise, which Adam is prevented from touching after the sin, having cast away the seeds of righteousness, from which the tree of life grows. 133 12, 2 better is the one who finds grace with the lord, but a lawless man shall be silenced "Be not silent from me," says David, "lest I become like those who go down into the pit." 134 13, 22 The good man will leave an inheritance to his children's children, but the wealth of sinners is stored up for the righteous The wealth of sinners is wickedness. But the righteous will consume it, clearly, through good teaching either now or in the age to come, being set over five and ten cities. And Paul says: "But according to your hardness and impenitent heart you are treasuring up for yourself wrath in the day of wrath and revelation of the righteous judgment of God." 135 14, 7 all things are contrary to a foolish man; but the lips of the wise are weapons of perception For "nothing evil opposes" wisdom, because it is an invincible weapon; for the demons are powerless only against it. 136 14, 9 The houses of the foolish will owe a cleansing; but the houses of the righteous are acceptable So that having become pure they might see God; for this is the blessed end which has been reserved for every rational nature. 137 14, 14 The bold-hearted will be filled with his own ways, but a good man from his own thoughts He now called the states of the virtues "thoughts," which he set against the ways of the bold-hearted. 138 14, 18 The foolish will inherit wickedness; but the prudent will take hold of perception He set wickedness against perception. But if wickedness is opposed to virtue, perception now signifies virtue.

139 15, 16 In abounding righteousness is much strength; but the ungodly will be destroyed root and branch

from the earth "Unless your righteousness exceeds that of the scribes and Pharisees, you will by no means enter the kingdom of heaven." 140 15, 10 The instruction of the innocent is known by those who pass by; but those who hate reproofs die disgracefully He now called the commandments "reproofs"; for these convict us when we sin. 141 15, 15 All the time the eyes of the evil expect evil things; but the good are at peace always Peace is abstinence from wickedness. 142 15, 24 The ways of life are the thoughts of the intelligent, so that by turning aside from Hades he may be saved He calls the practical virtues that lead to knowledge "ways of life". 143 15, 28α The ways of righteous men are acceptable with the Lord; and through them even enemies become friends Paul having preached: "who once were enemies have been reconciled to God through the death of his Son"; but one must consider if all enemies become friends through the righteous, so that Christ might also say to all: "I no longer call you servants, but friends."

144 16, 10 Divination is on the lips of a king; in judgment his mouth will not go

astray Christ knows the heart and will judge the world in righteousness. 145 16, 14 The king's wrath is an angel of death; but a wise man will appease it The angel who knows the reasons concerning punishment is called the wrath of God. 146 16, 16 The broods of wisdom are more desirable than gold; and the broods of prudence are more desirable than silver Knowledge of wisdom is above gold; and knowledge of prudence is above silver. 147 16, 17.3-4 He who accepts instruction will be among the good; but he who keeps reproofs will be made wise He calls the commandments of God "reproofs"; for these convict us when we sin. 148 A notion is a fountain of life to those who possess it; but the instruction of the foolish is evil He now called unrebuked instruction the instruction of the foolish. But if the instruction of the foolish is wickedness, unrebuked instruction is foolishness.

ἐργασία ἀρετῶν, ἡ πρακτική ἐστιν ἡ τεκτονική. 132 11, 30 ἐκ καρποῦ δικαιοσύνης φύεται δένδρον ζωῆς· ἀφαιροῦνται δὲ ἄωροι ψυχαὶ παρανόμων Τοῦτο τὸ δένδρον τῆς ζωῆς ἐστι τὸ φυτευθὲν ἐν μέσῳ τοῦ παραδείσου, οὗ ἅψασθαι μετὰ τὴν ἁμαρτίαν κωλύεται ὁ Ἀδὰμ τὰ σπέρματα τῆς δικαιοσύνης ἀποβαλών, ἀφ' ὧν φύεται τὸ δένδρον τῆς ζωῆς. 133 12, 2 κρείσσων ὁ εὑρὼν χάριν παρὰ κυρίῳ ἀνὴρ δὲ παράνομος παρασιωπηθήσεται «Μήποτε παρασιωπήσῃς ἀπ' ἐμοῦ, φησὶν ὁ ∆αυίδ, καὶ ὁμοιωθήσομαι τοῖς καταβαίνουσιν εἰς λάκκον.» 134 13, 22 ὁ ἀγαθὸς ἀνὴρ κληρονομήσει υἱοὺς υἱῶν· θησαυρίζεται δὲ δικαίοις πλοῦτος ἀσεβῶν Πλοῦτος ἀσεβῶν κακία. Οἱ δὲ δίκαιοι ἐξαναλώσουσιν αὐτὸν δηλονότι διὰ τῆς ἀγαθῆς διδασκαλίας ἤτοι νῦν ἢ καὶ ἐν τῷ αἰῶνι τῷ μέλλοντι γενόμενοι ἐπάνω πέντε καὶ δέκα πόλεων. Καὶ ὁ Παῦλός φησιν· «κατὰ δὲ τὴν σκληρότητά σου καὶ ἀμετανόητον καρδίαν θησαυρίζεις σεαυτῷ ὀργὴν ἐν ἡμέρᾳ ὀργῆς καὶ ἀποκαλύψεως δικαιοκρισίας τοῦ θεοῦ.» 135 14, 7 πάντα ἐναντία ἀνδρὶ ἄφρονι· ὅπλα δὲ αἰσθήσεως χείλη σοφά «Οὐκ ἀντιτάσσεται» γὰρ τῇ σοφίᾳ «οὐδὲν πονηρόν», διότι ὅπλον ἐστὶν ἀκαταμάχητον· μόνον γὰρ πρὸς αὐτὴν ἀδυνατοῦσιν οἱ δαίμονες. 136 14, 9 οἰκίαι ἀφρόνων ὀφειλήσουσι καθαρισμόν· οἰκίαι δὲ δικαίων δεκταί Ἵνα καθαροὶ γενόμενοι ἴδωσι τὸν θεόν· τοῦτο γάρ ἐστι τὸ μακάριον τέλος ὅπερ πάσῃ λογικῇ φύσα τετήρηται. 137 14, 14 τῶν ἑαυτοῦ ὁδῶν πλησθήσεται θρασυκάρδιος· ἀπὸ δὲ τῶν διανοημάτων αὐτοῦ ἀνὴρ ἀγαθός ∆ιανοήματα νῦν εἶπεν τὰς ἕξεις τῶν ἀρετῶν, ἅσπερ ταῖς ὁδοῖς τοῦ θρασυκαρδίου ἀντέθηκεν. 138 14, 18 μεριοῦνται ἄφρονες κακίαν· οἱ δὲ πανοῦργοι κρατήσουσιν αἰσθήσεως Ἀντέθηκε τὴν κακίαν τῇ αἰσθήσει. Εἰ δὲ ἡ κακία τῇ ἀρετῇ ἀντίκειται, ἡ αἴσθησις νῦν σημαίνει τὴν ἀρετήν.

139 15, 16 ἐν πλεοναζούσῃ δικαιοσύνῃ ἰσχὺς πολλή· οἱ δὲ ἀσεβεῖς ὁλόρριζοι

ἐκ γῆς ὀλοῦνται «Ἐὰν μὴ περισσεύσῃ ὑμῶν ἡ δικαιοσύνη πλέον τῶν γραμματέων καὶ φαρισαίων, οὐ μὴ εἰσέλθητε εἰς τὴν βασιλείαν τῶν οὐρανῶν.» 140 15, 10 παιδεία ἀκάκου γνωρίζεται ὑπὸ τῶν παριόντων· οἱ δὲ μισοῦντες ἐλέγχους τελευτῶσιν αἰσχρῶς Ἐλέγχους νῦν τὰς ἐντολὰς εἶπεν· αὗται γὰρ ἡμᾶς ἐλέγχουσιν ἁμαρτάνοντας. 141 15, 15 πάντα τὸν χρόνον οἱ ὀφθαλμοὶ τῶν κακῶν προσδέχονται κακά· οἱ δὲ ἀγαθοὶ ἡσυχάζουσιν διὰ παντός Ἡσυχία ἐστὶν ἀποχὴ κακίας. 142 15, 24 ὁδοὶ ζωῆς διανοήματα συνετοῦ, ἵνα ἐκκλίνας ἐκ τοῦ ᾅδου σωθῇ Ὁδοὺς ζωῆς λέγει τὰς πρακτικὰς ἀρετὰς τὰς φερούσας ἐπὶ τὴν γνῶσιν. 143 15, 28α δεκταὶ παρὰ κυρίῳ ὁδοὶ ἀνθρώπων δικαίων· διὰ δὲ αὐτῶν καὶ οἱ ἐχθροὶ φίλοι γίνονται Παύλου κηρύξαντος· «οἵ ποτε ὄντες ἐχθροὶ κατηλλάγησαν τῷ θεῷ διὰ τοῦ θανάτου τοῦ υἱοῦ αὐτοῦ»· πλὴν προσεκτέον εἰ πάντες οἱ ἐχθροὶ διὰ τῶν δικαίων φίλοι γίνονται, ἵνα καὶ πᾶσιν εἴπῃ ὁ Χριστός· «οὐκέτι ὑμᾶς καλῶ δούλους, ἀλλὰ φίλους.»

144 16, 10 μαντεῖον ἐπὶ χείλεσι βασιλέως· ἐν δὲ κρίσει οὐ μὴ πλανηθῇ τὸ

στόμα αὐτοῦ Καρδιογνώστης ἐστὶν ὁ Χριστὸς καὶ κρινεῖ τὴν οἰκουμένην ἐν δικαιοσύνῃ. 145 16, 14 θυμὸς βασιλέως ἄγγελος θανάτου· ἀνὴρ δὲ σοφὸς ἐξιλάσεται αὐτόν Ὁ ἄγγελος ὁ τοὺς περὶ κολάσεως ἐπιστάμενος λόγους θυμὸς τοῦ θεοῦ καλεῖται. 146 16, 16 νοσσιαὶ σοφίας αἱρετώτεραι χρυσίου· νοσσιαὶ δὲ φρονήσεως αἱρετώτεραι ὑπὲρ ἀργύριον Γνῶσις σοφίας ὑπὲρ χρυσίον· γνῶσις δὲ φρονήσεως ὑπὲρ ἀργύριον. 147 16, 17.3-4 ὁ δεχόμενος παιδείαν ἐν ἀγαθοῖς ἔσται· ὁ δὲ φυλάσσων ἐλέγχους σοφισθήσεται Ἐλέγχους λέγει τὰς ἐντολὰς τοῦ θεοῦ· αὗται γὰρ ἡμᾶς ἐλέγχουσιν ἁμαρτάνοντας. 148 πηγὴ ζωῆς ἔννοια τοῖς κεκτημένοις· παιδεία δὲ ἀφρόνων κακή Τὴν παιδείαν τὴν ἀνεξέλεγκτον νῦν παιδείαν ἀφρόνων ὠνόμασεν. Εἰ δὲ παιδεία ἀφρόνων ἡ κακία ἐστίν, ἡ ἀνεξέλεγκτος παιδεία ἡ ἀφροσύνη ἐστίν.
