And you to your dear children, Jonadab, excellent in counsel, urging upon them the highest bliss among mortals, uttered this law and command: “My children, Come, receive from your father the wealth he did not give to me, 591 nor does any loving father ever give it to another child, steadfast forever. Do not dwell in a house defined by its rooms, Do not plow the earth. And what use is the vine to you? Dwell in tents, and strong drink and sweet beverage may you never pour down your throat, no, my children, but live for God, and have God as your wealth alone, ever-living, the same, unshakable.” So he spoke; and the children fulfilled their father’s command. And I know also a people to the land of promise hastening, before whom a pillar of fire led the way, and of a cloud, drawing them through the trackless wilderness; for whom the sea yielded, and heaven gave food, and the rock sprouted water, and backward retreated the broad-flowing river, and the sun held back its chariot, 592 and a man set up a trophy with outstretched hands, foreshadowing the Cross, and faith bound the sharp points. And Elijah was fed by ravens, and he fed an old woman of Sidon with tiny drops of life, with the meal in the poor jar never failing, and the pitcher always gushing forth as much liquid oil, as was drawn by the hands of the hospitable woman. And the Hebrew children, longing for their own food, so that they might not be defiled at the king's table, went rejoicing above the Assyrian flame, and from there, refreshed, they came to their own homes. And Daniel, thrown as prey to raging lions, did not feed the lions, since he stretched out his hands, but received in his hands the aerial feast of the prophet. 593 And from its inmost bowels belched forth the divine Jonah the beast of the sea, just as it had received him for three days. O great wonder! For faith was enclosed with the prophet even in the bowels. And John's food was the locust and the comb of wild honey, and his garment the hair of high-crested camels, and his house the broad heaven, and his beds the desolate ground. Who saved Thecla from the fire, or who bound the strong might of flesh-devouring beasts? Truly a great wonder! Virginity put even the beasts to sleep, nor did they dare to defile the pure body of the virgin with their jaws. Nor indeed will I forget the chaste (for it is not fitting), Susanna, even if a husband brought her under his yoke, who had such a longing for modesty, that having fled 594 the most lawless hands, and by the unjust votes of judges being dragged to her doom, from death then saved her the spirit of a youth, with the mind of an old man, and dense counsels of one who judges rightly, who bound by their own words the elders of Babylon, most sinful, most lawless. And of Paul you yourself have heard, what a prize of suffering, of how many toils and grievous cares among friends, and enemies, and on the sea, and on the land he won, and to come to the region of the third heaven, and to place the whole world in sweet nets. He even glories in mournful things, as much as no one in prosperous things. And virtue lies in the midst of evils like a rose among hateful and sharp thorns. 595 Remembering these things, keep your life pure for the Lord, wholly in better hopes, lest she deceive you, Need, who very quickly subdues even a prudent man. For this reason also the wily one, when Christ the king he brought to trial, seeing God and mortal mixed, being hungry, he commanded him to change stones into food, so that he might take him, being in need, in his nets. But he missed God, but you, a mortal, he destructively fawns upon as a mortal. But be of God, and drive far away the enemy, remaining wholly God's, and above the flesh. Not as in the leading circle of an intricate dance, you might hold one person with your right hand, and another with your left, equally touching and being divided from the godhead, being half of Christ, and this half of the flesh; 596 Or cutting the sea with a swift and ready ship, when the wind has set and the waves are calm, to hold back the swift voyage with ship's cables, and to be dragged from the land, and to travel a sluggish path through the swell, similar both to seafarers and to land-travelers. And do not cast the ship-holding flesh upon your life, which even when it is striving,

Οὐδὲ μὲν οὐδ' ἁγνῆς ἐπιλήσομαι (οὐ γὰρ ἔοικε), Σωσάννης, εἰ καί μιν ὑπὸ ζυγὸν ἤγαγεν ἀνὴρ, Σωφροσύνης ἣ τόσσον ἔχεν πόθον, ὥστε φυγοῦσαν 594 Χεῖρας ἀθεσμοτάτας, ψήφοις τ' ἀδίκοισι δικαστῶν Ἐς μόρον ἑλκομένην, πόθ' ὑπὲκ θανάτοιο σάωσε Πνεῦμα νέου, πολιοῖο φρένας, καὶ μήδεα πυκνὰ Ὀρθοδίκου, δήσαντος ὑπὸ σφετέροισι λόγοισι Πρεσβυτέρους Βαβυλῶνος, ἀλιτροτάτους, ἀθεμίστους. Παύλου δ' αὐτὸς ἄκουσας, ὅσης κακότητος ἄεθλον, Ὁσσατίων μόχθων τε καὶ ἀργαλέων μελεδώνων Ἐν φιλίοις, ἐχθροῖς τε, καὶ εἰν ἁλὶ, καὶ κατὰ γαῖαν Ἤρατο, καὶ τριτάτοιο πόλου πρὸς χῶρον ἱκέσθαι, Καὶ θεῖναι γλυκερῇσιν ἐν ἄρκυσι κόσμον ἅπαντα. Μεσάτη δὲ κακῶν ἀρετὴ κατάκειται Ὡς ῥόδον ἐν στυγερῇσι καὶ ὀξείῃσιν ἀκάνθαις. 595 Τῶν σὺ μνωομένη, τήρει βίον ἁγνὸν Ἄνακτι, Πάμπαν ἐν ἐλπωρῇσιν ἀμείνοσι, μή σε δολώσῃ Χρειὼ, ἥ τε τάχιστα καὶ ἔμφρονα φῶτα δαμάζει. Τοὔνεκα καὶ δολόμητις, ἐπεὶ Χριστοῦ βασιλῆος Εἰς πεῖραν καθέηκε, Θεὸν βροτὸν ἄμμιγα λεύσσων Πεινάοντ', ἐκέλευσε λίθους εἰς εἶδαρ ἀμεῖψαι, Ὥς κεν χρηΐζοντα ἐν ἄρκυσιν ᾗσιν ἕλῃσιν. Ἀλλὰ Θεοῦ μὲν ἅμαρτε, σὲ δὲ βροτὸν οὔλια σαίνει Ὡς βροτόν. Ἀλλὰ Θεοῦ γε πέλοις, καὶ τῆλε διώκοις Ἐχθρὸν, ὅλη μίμνουσα Θεοῦ, καὶ σαρκὸς ὕπερθεν. Μηδ' ὡς ἐν πλεκτοῖο χοροῦ περιηγέϊ κύκλῳ, Τὸν μὲν δεξιτερῇ κατέχοις, ἄλλον δέ τε λαιῇ, Ἶσον ἐφαπτομένη καὶ σχιζομένη θεότητος, Ἥμισυ μὲν Χριστοῖο, τόδ' ἥμισυ σαρκὸς ἐοῦσα· 596 Ἢ πέλαγος τέμνουσα θοῇ καὶ ἐπαρτέϊ νηῒ, Πνεύματος ἱσταμένοιο καὶ εὔδια κυμαίνοντος, Ἴσχειν νηοπέδῃσι ταχὺν πλόον, ἢ δ' ἀπὸ γαίης Ἕλκεσθαι, νωθρήν τε δι' οἴδματος οἶμον ὁδεύειν, Ἄμφω ποντοπόροις καὶ πεζοπόροισιν ὁμοίην. Μηδὲ τεῇ ζωῇ βαλέειν ἐχενηΐδα σάρκα, Ἥτε καὶ ἱεμένην περ,
