flowing forth from God the Father of all, proceeding through the 5.7 Son, and made effective in the Holy Spirit. Having, therefore, this full assurance, we are baptized as we were commanded, we believe as we are baptized, we give glory as we believe, so that with one voice baptism and faith and glory are in the Father and the Son and 5.8 the Holy Spirit. But if anyone says two or three gods or three godheads, let him be anathema; and if anyone, according to the perversion of Arius, says that the Son or the Holy Spirit has come into being out of nothing, 5.9 let him be anathema. But all who shall follow the canon of truth and confess the three hypostases, piously recognized in their own properties, and believe that there is one Godhead, one goodness, one principle and authority and power, and who neither set aside the might of the monarchy nor fall into polytheism nor confuse the hypostases nor compose the Holy Trinity out of heterogeneous and dissimilar things, but in simplicity accept the doctrine of the faith, entrusting all the hope of their salvation to the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, these, in our judgment, think the same things with whom we also pray to have a part in the Lord.

To Bishop Ablabius

6.1 The Lord has preserved us, as was likely, having been sent forth by your prayers,

and I will relate to you a clear proof of God’s favor. 6.2 For when we had just left the village of Celosina behind us, there was a sudden gathering of clouds, and the air changed from clear sky to deep darkness. A cold breeze blowing through the clouds, dewy and very damp, fell upon our bodies, threatening rain at any moment, and on the left hand continuous thunderclaps were breaking out, and sharp and successive flashes of lightning preceded the thunder, and all the mountains, both before and behind and on either side, were covered 6.3 with clouds. And already a small cloud above our heads, caught by a violent wind, was laboring with rain, and we, like the Israelite miracle, surrounded on all sides by the waters, passed over the road as far as Ouestene without getting wet; where, when we had dismounted and were resting the mules, then the signal for the downpour was given to the 6.4 air by God. And after we had spent three or even four hours there, when we had had sufficient rest, God again parted the downpour, and the vehicle ran more smoothly than [before], the wheel slipping with ease in the wet and superficial 6.5 mud. And the whole road from there to our little town runs along the river, descending with the current of the water, with continuous estates along the banks of the river, all by the roadside and not separated from one another by much space. 6.6 The whole road, therefore, from this succession of dwellings, with some coming to meet us and others escorting us continuously, was filled with people, mixing many tears 6.7 with their joy. And there was a light drizzle making the air damp; but a little before the town the cloud overhead was compressed into a more violent downpour, so that our entrance was made quietly, with no one perceiving 6.8 our arrival. But when we were already inside the portico, since the vehicle was clattering over the dry ground, I do not know from where or how, as if from some device, a crowd suddenly appeared packed in a circle around us, so that it was not even easy to get down from the vehicle; for it was not possible to find a space 6.9 empty of people. With difficulty persuading them to give us time to get down and to allow passage for the mules, we went on, being pressed on every side by those who thronged around us, so that their excessive kindness 6.10 almost became the cause of fainting. 6.1 ∆ιέσωσεν ἡμᾶς ὁ κύριος, ὡς εἰκὸς ἦν ὑπὸ τῶν σῶν προπεμφθέντας εὐχῶν,
