as also before, that now most of all it is necessary to do and suffer all things, so as not to leave your good husbandry desolate, nor to allow any of the things already set right to be corrupted. For indeed, when shepherds see great destruction coming upon the sheep from all sides, then most of all they keep watch and are aroused, and handle the sling, and use every other art, so as to drive away all harm from the flock. For if Jacob, entrusted with irrational sheep, continued serving for fourteen years, enduring hardship in heat and cold, and with much sleeplessness, and served the most extreme servitude, consider how many things it is necessary to do and suffer for those entrusted with the rational sheep, so that none of them may be lost. I exhort your Reverence, therefore, by as much as the storm is greater, and the evils more numerous, and the hindrances severe, and the plotters many, by so much the more to rouse yourself, and to exhort others 52.639 to take part with you in this good providence, and with much speed to hasten to arrive there. For even for the journey itself you will have no small reward; and if for the journey, much more if you should take up the works, and show much zeal. For to make such journeys is much better and more useful than sitting at home. For while being there, it is possible to have these things which you now have: the fasting, the vigils, the rest of the philosophic life. But sitting at home, it is not possible to gain what it is possible to reap by being there: the salvation of so many souls, the reward from the dangers, the recompense from so much zeal; for there is a recompense for zeal. Considering, therefore, what great crowns you will lay up for yourself beforehand, do not delay, nor put it off; but making light of it, be exhorted to undertake the journey from here now, being anxious for nothing on account of needs. For I have said everything to my lord, the most honorable and most reverend presbyter Constantius, whether it be necessary to spend on buildings, or on the needs of the brethren, to provide to you with greater abundance, and with more now than before. Having therefore both the facility from there and above all doing a thing pleasing to God, casting out all hesitation, be exhorted to hasten quickly, and make this known to us from there, so that even being in a harsh wilderness we may reap much consolation from this. For if we should learn that you have gone away there with that resolve, prepared to do and suffer all things for the salvation of the souls there, we will not even consider that we dwell in a wilderness, from so great a pleasure. For we ourselves also desire to see you come; but since this which I have said is more necessary, and there is a fear lest the winter should close the road to you from here to there, for this reason we urge you, and exhort you to hasten quickly. 55. To Symeon and Marus, presbyters, and to the monks in the region of Apamea. Although we are separated by a great distance of road, and we dwell in a most harsh wilderness, nevertheless, having learned of the virtue of your soul, and the great philosophy, by which you enlighten all who are there, we have become ardent lovers of you. And since it is not possible for now to enjoy a meeting with you face to face, both because of the winter season and the length of the road, we have been eager to converse with you by letter, exhorting your Reverence, both to pray earnestly for a release from the evils that have overtaken the world, and to stir up everyone to this with much zeal, and to write to us more frequently, whenever it is possible, concerning your health; so that even being far away from you, and settled at the very ends of the world, we may from this also reap much consolation, by learning more frequently about your well-being. 52.640 And the most longed for and sweetest John the presbyter has greatly gladdened us, having chosen in so great a difficulty of the times to set out from home, and to undertake the journey to Phoenicia. I exhort you therefore, having considered how great the magnitude of the right action is, if any
