it narrates how the offerings ought to be divided and offered up. And in this book is the anointing of the high priest and of the priests, and the distinction and the knowledge of the signs, concerning the leprosy of men and of garments and of the wall of a house, and the law concerning their purification. 56.329 A law and distinction concerning lawful marriages, and which ones are unlawful. And again a distinction of clean and unclean cattle and birds and fish and creeping things, and which of these the Hebrews ought to eat, and from which they were commanded to abstain. And it indicates the day of trumpets on the new moon of the seventh month; and the commandment of the great fast, that in the same seventh month on the tenth of the month they should observe this, which he calls a Sabbath of sabbaths and a remission of sin. It contains the feast of tabernacles on the 15th of the same month. And concerning feasts, and the things that ought to be offered in them. And concerning the release of Hebrews who are sold, and the cancellation of debts, and concerning the rest of the land which ought to take place every 7 years. It explains again a reminder of laws and commandments and testimonies. It contains both promises for those who keep it, and the most terrible threats for those who transgress it. And it makes the distinction and the reason for clean and unclean foods thus. And it says the clean things from cattle are such as these, those that divide the hoof and are cloven-footed, having two claws, and that bring up the cud; such as the calf, sheep, goat, deer, buffalo, gazelle, oryx, pygarg, goat-deer, camelopard, and such things. But if any of these things are lacking, it is unclean; such as the camel and the hare and the hyrax; for these chew the cud, but do not divide the hoof; and the pig; and this one divides the hoof and is cloven-footed, but does not chew the cud. And from the birds, which it commands not to eat, are these: the eagle, the griffon, the sea-eagle [read: osprey], the vulture, the kite, the raven, and their kinds, and the hawk and its kinds, and the night-raven, and the cormorant, and the ibis, and the purple swamphen, and the pelican, and the swan, and the heron, and the plover, and their kinds, and the hoopoe and the bat. And of the flying creeping things it says that all are unclean, which go on all four, but have legs above their feet, so as to leap with them from the earth, such as the locust, the pittacus, the attagus, and the grasshopper, and their kinds, and the ophiuchus. And the things in the waters, both in the sea and in the rivers and torrents, it says these are clean, whatsoever has fins and scales, such as the red mullet, the scarus, the glaucus, the grey mullet, and their kinds. But those that are lacking in any of these, are unclean and not to be eaten, such as the cuttlefish; for it has fins, but no scales. And of the creeping things on the earth it says these are unclean, the weasel, the mouse, the land crocodile, the shrew-mouse, and the chameleon, the gecko, the lizard and the mole. For concerning the snake and its kinds it was superfluous to make mention in it; for it was clear to all that these are abominable and hateful. And likewise he also made mention of them in Deuteronomy. Further it contains concerning things that die of themselves as being forbidden, and of blood likewise, and concerning women giving birth. And if he has a seminal [read: spermatic] issue, he will be unclean for seven days. And [concerning] the eight-day circumcision of the infant. And concerning the privy, and concerning the difference of purification for women giving birth to a male or a female. And a law concerning leprosy and its purification, and concerning 56.330 discharges [some read: fluxes] and seminal emissions. And concerning reverence, and concerning the scapegoat and concerning fasting; and concerning the need not to make disorderly unions, and concerning lawful and unlawful marriages, and that the priest must not take a widow or a divorced woman, but a virgin and in all things unblemished (six? perhaps spotless). And concerning a priest's daughter who prostitutes herself. And concerning the priest being without blemish. And concerning the offered gifts. And concerning sabbaths, and feasts, and the feast of the passover, and the feasts of tabernacles and the
