For his endurance was truly endurance, extended to the end, about which the Savior says: But he who endures to the end, this one will be saved. Fire fell from heaven. Daily he labored offering sacrifices for his children; what he labored daily to offer, God took at once as a sacrifice. Fire fell from heaven. If I alone were clothed, I would justly grieve; but if the poor were clothed, can the Master neglect the destitute? I know that what he has taken as a sacrifice, he gives back fivefold. God knows what he is doing. Now he has taken my substance, as a sacrifice; but he multiplies my being for an abundance of virtue. The arrows from without do not shake me, fortified from within; rather, the arrows of God strengthen me from within. For the arrows of the mighty one are sharpened; about which David said, "Your arrows have been fixed in me;" The arrows, which ones? The arrow of piety, the arrow of righteousness, the arrow of longing for God, the arrow of zeal for virtue; by these divine arrows the soul is wounded. Thus when the devil had brought every temptation, and stripped him of his possessions, he did not strip him of his virtue, he proceeds then against his nature, and violates the husbandry of nature, and tears the branches from the root, and crushes the children of the good combatant; he removes the fruit, in order to grieve the one who begot them. And what does he do? See also the message of the Evil One, how it is full of irony, and tending toward sorcery, and able to break the soul of the noble man. Therefore he says to him: While your sons and your daughters were eating and drinking in the house of your eldest son, a great wind came from the desert, and shook the house, and it fell upon your little children, and they died. And the word is a diminutive, able to stir up grief. He did not say, "Upon your offspring," but, "Upon the little children," so that hearing of the little children, he might come to pity, that he might be bent toward compassion.
