to the most good father. For whose sake we also oppose him, resisting his laws in vengeance for the father. And since he said, "You shall not commit adultery," we, he says, should commit adultery for the overthrow of his commandment. One might reasonably call these men inventors of evils, who join blasphemies to their licentiousness. XVII. -Concerning the Peratae. Ademes the Carystian, and Euphrates the Peratic, from whom those of like mind with them were called Peratae, say that there is one world divided in three parts; and one part is like a great 83.369 spring, able in principle to be divided into infinite parts. The first division they call a Triad, and call it a perfect good, a paternal magnitude. The second, a multitude of infinite powers. The third they call particular. And the first they say is unbegotten, and they name three gods, three words, three minds, three men. And from above, from the unbegottenness and the first division of the world, around the very consummation of the world, in the times of Herod, a certain threefold man descended, and three-bodied, and three-powered, called Christ; and he passed through both the unbegotten world and the self-begotten, and came into this world in which we are. And Christ, having descended, will prepare the things brought down from above to return above, and will deliver to punishment those who plotted against them. And they say that the unbegotten world and the self-begotten will be saved; but this world will be destroyed, which they name "particular". XVIII. -Concerning Monoimus. They say that Monoimus the Arab, having taken his starting points from the science of arithmetic, fashioned his own heresy. XIX. -Concerning Hermogenes. Hermogenes said that God created all things out of a pre-existing and co-unbegotten matter. For the thunderstruck man supposed it was impossible even for the God of all to create out of things that are not. This man said that the body of the Lord was laid up in the sun, and that the devil and the demons would be resolved into matter. Theophilus, the bishop of the Antiochenes, wrote against him, and Origen likewise. And against Valentinus, and those from him, both Irenaeus, and Clement, and Origen. XX. -Concerning Tatian and the Hydroparastatae, or Encratites. Tatian the Syrian was first a sophist, and then he also became a student of the divine Justin the martyr. But after the perfection of his teacher, he desired to become the founder of a heresy. He collected the starting points of his fabrication, from Valentinus, the emanations of the Aeons, and from Saturnilus and Marcion, the abomination of marriage, and of the partaking of animate things and of wine. Those called Hydroparastatae and Encratites have him as their leader. They are named Hydroparastatae, as offering water instead of wine; and Encratites, as neither drinking wine nor partaking of animate things. 83.372 They abstain from these things, abominating them as evil. And they pursue celibacy, calling marriage fornication, and naming lawful union diabolical. This man also composed the so-called Gospel of the Four, cutting out the genealogies, and
