Therefore, as a symbol of his coming burial she anoints him with the ointment, and wipes with her hair, so that she might receive the blessing from him. And the house being filled with the fragrance was a symbol of the fragrance spreading throughout the whole world after the passion of Christ; for when the body of Christ was pierced like an alabaster jar, the fragrance of knowledge filled the world. 176Jo 12, 4 He said this not because he cared for the poor, but because he was desirous of avarice. 177 Jo 12, 6 And the Lord bore with him stealing from the poor, until he should also endure from him the reproach of betrayal. The Lord does not rebuke the disciple, because he rebuked the woman on account of his own theft, wishing to shame him by great long-suffering; for he knew, and had convicted him from the beginning. But if another evangelist says that all the disciples said this, we say that both all of them and this one did, but the rest not with the same intention. And the Lord for this reason likely entrusted the management to him, so that having sufficient consolation for his desire from the money box, he might not say, "I committed the betrayal out of love for money," and he bore with him and did not accuse him, taking away from him all defense. 178 Jo 12, 7-8 Through the intention of the woman the savior clearly teaches that the dispensation of the ointment became a symbol of his burial. which seems to be the last grace of one who is about to depart; for when one is able, he does good to the poor if he wishes. 179Jo 12, 9 And the crowds came together not only to see the one who raised, but also the one who was raised, whom some likely came also and
