they will obtain mercy.” And let him be a peacemaker, because again He says, “Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God.” And let him have a good conscience, cleansed from all evil and wickedness and injustice, because it is said again, “Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God.” Let him therefore be sober, sensible, orderly, steadfast, untroubled, not a brawler, not a striker, but gentle, not quarrelsome, not a lover of money; not a recent convert, lest being puffed up he fall into the condemnation of the devil, for, “Everyone who exalts himself will be humbled.” Such must the bishop be: the husband of one wife who has been married only once, ruling his own house well. For thus let him be tested, when receiving ordination he is appointed in the place of the episcopate: if he is faithful and orderly and reverent, if he has or has had a faithful and reverent wife, if he has brought up his children in the fear of God and has trained them in the admonition of the Lord, if those of his household, respecting and reverencing him, are all obedient to him. For if his own according to the flesh rise up against him and are disobedient, how will those outside of his house who have become his own submit to him? Let him be tested, therefore, if he is blameless in the necessities of life; for it is written: “You shall examine him who is about to be chosen for the priesthood.” Let him therefore be not prone to anger, for Wisdom says, “Anger destroys even the prudent.” And let him be compassionate, not coarse, loving, for the Lord says, “By this all will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.” Let him be generous, a lover of widows, hospitable, serviceable, ready to minister, willing to be troubled, unashamed, knowing who is more worthy of support. For if there is some widow who is able to support herself with her possessions in life, and another who is not a widow but is in need either because of sickness or child-rearing or weakness of her hands, let him stretch out his hand to this one more. But if anyone is afflicted in worldly matters as a glutton or a drunkard or an idler, he is not worthy of assistance, nor indeed of the Church of God. For the scripture says concerning these things, that “The slothful man hides his hand in his bosom, and will not be able to bring it to his mouth.” And again, “The lazy man has folded his hands and eaten his own flesh; for every drunkard and fornicator will be impoverished, and every one will be clothed in rags
