to sing Now a prophetic prediction hastens to be fulfilled, not in a relaxed and delayed manner, but enthusiastically, as it were, with great shouting and beyond one's strength; at which, indeed, the prisoner then seemed to change to a more cheerful mood and to be pleased, as one might think from what appeared, by the melody, but in truth, and as the singer could not have suspected, by the good omen that appeared to him in the present circumstances. But thus, when they had completed the journey over several days and reached the emperor, the one who had been sent appeared with all speed to the ruler and 53 announced the arrival, but the one who had not been brought in at all, the prison received as one condemned; but it was otherwise suspected that, when the ruler had leisure, his case would be given to an examination greater than was possible at that time. But time was being wasted while the emperor was ill, and the prison held him as a prisoner, though not for confessed acts of treason; for there was no charge at all, unless someone should make it a charge against the one being held, the suspicion and the fact that many in secret were bringing forth what was fated, whom one could believe whispering it. But for the time being, the pretext also seemed a charge. And this was ..., but we must take up the account again, so that we may have a clearer understanding of the matters before us.
12. How the emperor, being ill, suspected everyone of magic, and the events concerning Martha. A disease had fallen upon the ruler, and the disease was terrible; for he was seized, falling down frequently. And it was, as it seems, from a natural heat of the heart. Whence, I think, his genius was also beyond what was proper, since the part could not contain the affliction and from there probability was diverted, so that often not even useful breaths were sent up to the brain, whence also comes reasoning. For in this one might reconcile the strife of philosophers concerning thinking; for the heart is the source of thoughts, though they are brought up to the brain, and as that has proportion or indeed disproportion, so what is brought up happens to be formed. At that time, therefore, when the disease frequently attacked him, I know not from where, the sufferer supposed the affliction to be a divine wrath from demonic sorcery. And the many on the outside, who were inclined to believe such things, attributed the crime to the Mouzalones, who had obtained dignities contrary to reason and as they would not have expected; to the sufferer, however, everyone was suspect, if only someone would accuse them of sorcery. Whence also very many, even of the common people, were arrested, if anyone anywhere muttered an accusation. And the one prosecuting for sorcery often brought the charge against another on behalf of himself or his neighbor, as if he would exact justice by proving it; and when the charge was brought before the emperor—for it was not possible for him to be silent after hearing it—he, not on behalf of anyone else, but being entirely concerned for 55 himself, ordered it to be investigated. And the proof by which the one judged was not to be condemned by all votes was not the production of witnesses, not oaths being proposed, not examinations of their prior lives, not other things by which a falsehood is refuted; but one and only one thing was what saved the convicted, if, stooping down with a daring hand, they should take up a red-hot mass of iron from the fire, which indeed they called holy, and should walk three steps holding it, having been purified by fasting and prayer for three days before this was to happen, and their hand having been sealed with a covering and a bulla, so that no one might attempt with certain ointments, for the purpose of the fire not touching or burning it. And the writer, being a youth at that time, saw some who underwent such things, and, what is marvelous, they were also released unharmed. At that time, therefore, it was ordained by the ruler for others also to take in marriage women of good birth, even if they themselves were often from seeds not noble; however, their nobility was inclined by the ruler, and, as they had to be dignified by their offices, the ruler considered the marriage a benefit for both parties, so that they were magnified by the matrons, as a Roman would say, as was fitting, and the women in turn shared in the dignities of the men they married. He commands therefore, along with the others, also a certain one of those who had been assigned to him as pages, while his father was living, Balanidiotes by surname, the of the
