they seem in part, concerning the flood and the giants and Noah himself, who is also called Xisuthros among them, 24 to agree with the divinely inspired scripture, from which those who compiled these things also appropriated every good thought. But since even poisons, being unknown, are often known to cause death to those inexperienced who partake of them, I consider it necessary to set forth side by side small selections of what is contained for us from the divine scriptures, not for their confirmation, God forbid, but for the refutation of their falsehood. But before these things, the following history concerning the watchers from the first book of Enoch, as being more akin to our scriptures, will be set forth, even if it is apocryphal and in some parts doubtful, being somewhat as follows. From the book of Enoch The remaining things concerning the watchers Then men cried out to heaven, saying: Bring our judgment to the Most High, and our destruction before the great glory, before the Lord of all lords in majesty. And hearing, the four great archangels Michael and Uriel and Raphael and Gabriel, the four looked down upon the earth from the holy places of heaven. and seeing much blood shed upon the earth and all lawlessness and impiety happening on it, entering in they said to one another that the spirits and the souls of men are interceding, groaning and saying: Bring our petition to the Most High. And the four archangels approached and said to the Lord: You are God of gods and Lord of lords and King of kings and God of men, and the throne of Your glory is for all the generations of the ages, and Your name is holy and blessed for all the ages; for You are the one who made all things and having authority over all things, and all things are manifest and uncovered before You, and You see all things, and there is nothing that can be hidden from You. You see what Azazel has done, what things he brought in and what things he taught, injustices and sins upon the earth, and all deceit upon the dry land. For he taught the mysteries and revealed to the age the things in heaven. and the sons of men practice his practices, to know the mysteries. To Semiazas you gave the authority to have over those who were with him, and they went to the daughters of the men of the earth and slept with them and were defiled with the females and they made known to them all 25 the sins, and taught them to make abominations, and now behold, the daughters of men have borne from them giant sons. Spurious things of men have been poured out upon the earth, and the whole earth was filled with injustice. And now, behold, the spirits of the souls of men who have died are interceding, and their groaning has ascended unto the gates of heaven, and it cannot go forth from the face of the injustices being done upon the earth. And You know these things before they happen and You see them and allow them, and You say nothing. What must be done to them concerning this? Then the Most High said and the Holy and Great One spoke, and he sent Uriel to the son of Lamech, saying: Go to Noah and say to him: In my name hide yourself, and reveal to him the end that is coming, because the whole earth is perishing. and say to him that a flood is about to come upon the whole earth, to destroy everything from the face of the earth. Teach the righteous one what he shall do, the son of Lamech, and he will preserve his soul for life and will escape for eternity and from him a plant will be planted and will be established for all the generations of the age. And to Raphael he said: Go, Raphael, and bind Azazel, bind him hand and foot, and cast him into the darkness, and open the desert that is in the desert of Dudael, and having gone there, cast him down; and place under him sharp stones and rough stones, and cover him with darkness, and let him dwell there forever, and cover his face, and let him not see light; and on the day of judgment he will be led away into the conflagration of fire;
