having touched the saving waters, the deadly sickness is more quickly washed away. And the place is both notable and renowned to the neighbors and to those dwelling somewhere far away, and eagerly sought after for healing by those in need. And not only in that place is the beauty and healing grace bestowed upon you confined, but also for those everywhere in the inhabited world who approach you with fervent faith and celebrate your annual memorial, pestilential wounds are healed, and the unpleasant affliction and trouble of every age is put to flight, and demonic energies are driven away by your rebukes; nay, but even from all dangers and calamities are they delivered, who call upon you as a helper for defense. 23. Do not therefore fail, O pure ever-virgin, watching over your refugees with a compassionate gaze, but also him who has addressed to you this humble and feeble little discourse of praise, falling very far short indeed of your surpassing worth, but for which he, with no less than humble zeal, has taken thought according to his ability, may you gladly accept the intention, and compassionately bending down and assenting, receive the most meager gift, as your bridegroom Christ received the two mites from the poor widow, having regard not to the quantity of what was given, but to the quality of the giver's mind. And may I find you also a gentle healer for my spiritual and bodily wounds, and in all circumstantial afflictions a most ready protectress; and may you calmly still the impulses and leapings of my passions, so that, having regulated my life toward what is needful, and having crossed the worldly surge without a storm, having moored at the ageless life and saving harbor, I may obtain through you, for my immeasurable transgressions, from the common and merciful judge, one who rather forgives and pardons through your embassy and intercession, than one who has already justly condemned and judged my sloth, and to all those who in faith love your name, and honor it, and hold it in reverence, and flee for refuge to your helpful intercession, may you become, O victory-bearer Barbara, and gloriously triumphant, ever-sung, and ever-memorable, and all-praised martyr, and most lawful athlete, a procurer of the kingdom of heaven, and in every grievous event a champion, and an ambassador who brings no shame to the all-good Christ our God, with whom to the beginningless, and unbegotten, and worshipped Father, together with the consubstantial and life-creating Spirit, be glory, honor, worship, now, and ever, and unto the ages of ages. Καὶ ἔστιν τοῖς περιοίκοις, καὶ τοῖς μακράν που ἀπῳκισμένοις ὁ τόπος ἐπίσημός τε καὶ διαβόητος, καὶ πρὸς θεραπείαν τοῖς χρῄζουσι περισπούδαστος. Καὶ οὐκ ἐν ἐκείνῳ μόνον τῷ χώρῳ ἥ σοι δεδωρημένη καλλονὴ, καὶ χάρις ἰαματικὴ περιγέγραπται, ἀλλὰ καὶ τοῖς πανταχῆ τῆς οἰκουμένης μετὰ θερμῆς σοι προσιοῦσι τῆς πίστεως, καὶ τὸ σὸν ἐτήσιον ἐκτελοῦσι μνημόσυνον, τὰ λοιμώδη θεραπεύεται τραύματα, καὶ πάσης ἡλικίας ἡ ἀηδὴς φυγαδεύεται σκῆψις καὶ ὄχλησις, ἐνέργειαί τε δαιμονιώδεις τοῖς σοῖς ἐμβριμήμασιν ἀπελαύνονται· οὐ μὴν ἀλλὰ καὶ πάντων ἐκλυτροῦνται κινδύνων καὶ περιστάσεων, οἵ σε πρὸς ἄμυναν ἐπίκουρον προσκαλούμενοι. κγʹ. Μὴ τοίνυν λείπῃς, ἁγνὴ ἀειπάρθενε, τοὺς σοὺς ἐποπτεύουσα συμπαθεῖ τῷ βλέμματι πρόσφυγας, ἀλλὰ καὶ τὸν τουτί σοι προσπεφωνηκότα εὐτελὲς, καὶ ἐξίτηλον τῆς εὐφημίας λογίδριον, παραπολὺ μὲν τῆς σῆς ὑπερφεροῦς ἀξίας ἀπολειπόμενον, εὐτελοῦς δὲ προθυμίας οὐκ ἔλαττον αὐτῷ πεφροντισμένον πρὸς δύναμιν, ἀσμενῶς τῆς προαιρέσεως ἀποδέξω, καὶ συμπαθῶς ἐπικαμπτομένη καὶ ἐπινεύουσα, τὸ βραχύτατον δῶρον προσίεσο, ὡς ὁ σὸς νυμφίος Χριστὸς τὰ δύο λεπτὰ παρὰ τῆς πενιχρᾶς χήρας προσήκατο, οὐ τῇ τοῦ διδομένου ποσότητι, τῆς προσφερούσης δὲ γνώμης προσεσχηκὼς τῇ ποιότητι. Εὕροιμι δέ σε καὶ τῶν ἐμῶν ψυχικῶν καὶ σωματικῶν μωλώπων προσηνῆ θεραπεύτριαν, καὶ πάσαις ταῖς περιστατικαῖς θλίψεσι ἑτοιμοτάτην προστάτιδα· καί μου τῶν παθῶν στήσοις γαληνῶς τὰς ὁρμὰς, καὶ σκιρτήματα, ἵνα καὶ τὸν βίον πρὸς ἃ δεῖ ῥυθμίσας, καὶ τὸν κοσμικὸν ἀναχειμάστως περαιώσας κλύδωνα, πρὸς ζωὴν τὴν ἀγήρω, καὶ λιμένα σωτήριον προσορμίσας, τύχοιμι διὰ σοῦ ἐπὶ τοῖς ἀμέτροις πλημμελήμασι, τοῦ κοινοῦ καὶ εὐσπλάγχνου κριτοῦ, ἀφιέντος μᾶλλον καὶ συγχωροῦντος διὰ τὴν πρεσβείαν καὶ ἔντευξιν, ἤδη τὴν ἐμὴν ῥᾳθυμίαν ἐνδίκως καταψηφισαμένου καὶ κατακρίνοντος, πᾶσι δὲ τοῖς πίστει σου τὴν προσηγορίαν ἀγαπῶσι, καὶ τιμῶσι, καὶ δι' αἰδοῦς ἄγουσι, καὶ τῇ ἀντιληπτικῇ σου προσφεύγουσι πρεσβείᾳ, γένοιο, ὦ ἀθλοφόρε Βαρβάρα, καὶ καλλίνικε ἀοίδιμε, καὶ ἀείμνηστε, καὶ πανεύφημε μάρτυς, καὶ ἐννομοτάτη ἀθλήτρια, τῆς τῶν οὐρανῶν βασιλείας πρόξενος, καὶ ἐν πάσῃ λυπηρᾷ συμβάσει ὑπέρμαχος, καὶ πρέσβυς ἀκαταίσχυντος πρὸς τὸν πανάγαθον Χριστὸν τὸν Θεὸν ἡμῶν, μεθ' οὗ τῷ ἀνάρχῳ, καὶ ἀγεννήτῳ, καὶ προσκυνητῷ Πατρὶ, ἅμα τῷ ὁμοουσίῳ, καὶ ζωαρχικῷ Πνεύματι, δόξα, τιμὴ, προσκύνησις, νῦν, καὶ ἀεὶ, καὶ εἰς τοὺς αἰῶνας τῶν αἰώνων.
