Plato. Honorable indeed is also the one who wrongs no one; but the one who does not even permit wrongdoers to do wrong, is worthy of more than double the honor of that one. For the one is a match for one, but the other for many others.

For indeed I think, and I, and you, and other men, consider doing wrong to be worse than suffering wrong; and not paying the penalty, worse than paying it.

753 It is right to praise those among men, who choose no advantage over what is just; for it is possible to acquire wealth, but it is not easy to purchase a good reputation with wealth.

Moschion. It is better to judge justly and be unjustly blamed by the one condemned, than to judge unjustly and be justly censured by nature.

From the Seven Philosophers. And it seems to me that a city fares best 15Ε_056 and best preserves democracy, in which they prosecute and punish the wrongdoer more than the one who was wronged.

Hyperides. For two reasons people abstain from wrongdoings, either through fear, or through shame.

Socrates. What you are angered by when you suffer it from others, do not do to others. Epictetus. Just as a straight scale is neither corrected by a true scale, nor

judged by a false one; so also the just judge is neither corrected by the just, nor tried by the unjust.

Do not judge in another's court, before you yourself have been judged by justice. Pythagoras. The wrongdoer suffers greater evils through his conscience, being tormented,

than the one who is scourged in body and with blows. Zeno. Zeno the Stoic philosopher, being asked by one of his acquaintances,

how we might do nothing unjust, said: If you constantly imagine that I am with you.

The same man, being asked if a man doing wrong can escape God's notice, said: But not even when he is thinking of it.

Socrates. Having been condemned by the Athenians to be thrown from a cliff, while his wife Xanthippe was weeping and saying: "O Socrates, how unjustly you are dying!" he said: "So you would have wished me to die justly?"

Menander. From a good man suspect no evil. A just character does not know how to do wrong. Socrates to Xenophon. Does not the deed seem to you to be a more certain proof than the word?

"Very much so, by Zeus," he said. For many, while saying just things, do unjust things; but of those who do just things, not one would be unjust.

Discourse 56. Concerning friends and brotherly love. 15Ε_058 1 Corinthians 13. If I speak with the tongues of men and of

angels, but have not love, I have become 756 a noisy gong, or a clanging cymbal. And a little after: If I give away all my possessions, and deliver up my body to be burned, but have not love, I am nothing.

Proverbs 27. More trustworthy are the wounds of a friend, than the voluntary kisses of an enemy.

Proverbs 29. He who prepares a net before the face of his friend, will cast it around his own feet.

Ἐκ τῶν ἑπτά φιλοσόφων. ∆οκεῖ δέ μοι πόλις ἄριστα πράττειν 15Ε_056 καί μάλιστα σώζειν δημοκρατίαν, ἐν ᾗ τόν ἀδικήσαντα τοῦ ἀδικηθέντος προβάλλονται καί κολάζουσιν.

Ὑπερίδου. ∆ιά δύο προφάσεις τῶν ἀδικημάτων ἄνθρωποι ἀπέχονται, ἤ διά φόβον, ἤ διά αἰσχύνην.

Σωκράτ. Ἅ πάσχοντες παρ᾿ ἑτέροις ὀργίζεσθε, ταῦτα τοῖς ἄλλοις μή ποιεῖτε. Ἐπικτήτου. Ὥσπερ εὐθύς ζυγός, οὔτε πρός ἀληθοῦς εὐθύνεται ζυγοῦ, οὔθ᾿

ὑπό ψευδοῦς κρίνεται· οὕτω καί ὁ δίκαιος κριτής, οὔθ᾿ ὑπό δικαίων εὐθύνεται, οὔτε παρ᾿ ἀδίκοις δικάζεται.

Μή πρότερον ἑτέρῳ δικαστηρίῳ δικάσῃς, πρίν αὐτός παρά τῇ δίκῃ κριθῇς. Πυθαγόρου. Κακά μείζω πάσχει διά τοῦ συνειδότος ὁ ἀδικῶν, βασανιζόμενος,

ἤ ὁ τῷ σώματι καί ταῖς πληγαῖς μαστιγούμενος. Ζήνωνος. Ζήνων ὁ Στοϊκός φιλόσοφος, ἐρωτηθείς ὑπό τινος τῶν γνωρίμων,

πῶς ἄν μηδέν τῶν ἀδίκων πράττο[ι]μεν, εἶπεν· Ἐάν διά παντός ὑπολαμβάνητέ με συμπαρεῖναι ὑμῖν.

Ὁ αὐτός ἐρωτηθείς, εἰ δύναται λανθάνειν Θεόν ἄνθρωπος ἀδικῶν, Ἀλλ᾿ οὐδέ διανοούμενος , ἔφη.

Σωκράτης. Καταδικασθείς ὑπό Ἀθηναίων κατακρημνισθῆναι, τῆς γυναικός Ξανθίππης κλαιούσης, καί λεγούσης· Ὦ Σώκρατες, ὡς ἀδίκως ἀποθνήσκεις! ἔφη· Σύ οὖν ἐβούλου με δικαίως ἀποθανεῖν;

Μενάνδρου. Χρηστοῦ πρός ἀνδρός μηδέν ὑπονόει κακόν. ∆ίκαιος ἀδικεῖν οὐκ ἐπίσταται τρόπος. Ξενοφῶντι Σωκράτης. Ἦ οὐ δοκεῖ σοι ἀξιοτεκμαρτότερον τοῦ λόγου τό ἔργον
