For you detest all who embrace a lawless life. For he added this; 7. "You have hated, Lord, all who work iniquity; you will destroy all who speak falsehood. The Lord detests a man of blood and deceit." He brought forth the catalogue of wickedness, showing all things to be contrary to the divine will. For he not only forbids evil, and lawlessness, and falsehood, and deceit, and murder; but he also detests the workers of these things, who are unwilling to attend to repentance. Through these things he signifies those who at different times have risen up against the Church, and were not able to prevail, according to the prohibition of God our Savior himself; "For the gates of hades, he says, will not prevail against it." This the psalm also revealed. 8. "But I, in the multitude of your mercy, will enter into your house; I will worship toward your holy temple in your fear." For enjoying your loving-kindness, and guarded by your right hand, I offer you perpetual worship in the temple consecrated to your glory, always bearing your fear; for I will not endure to cast it away, trusting in your loving-kindness. 9. "Lord, guide me in your righteousness, because of my enemies make my way straight before you." Some of the copies have "your way before me;" and both adhere to a pious meaning. For if our way were made straight before God, we would not experience error; and if God's way were made straight before us, we would travel it, and eagerly run to it. Therefore the inheriting one asks to be guided by the righteousness of God, and for the way to be made straight and easy for her, that she may travel it with ease. Symmachus has set down this meaning; for instead of "make straight," he said "make level." And we hear Christ himself through Isaiah; 80.900 "The crooked shall become straight, and the rough into smooth ways." And in another psalm the blessed David said: "The steps of a man are directed by the Lord, and he will greatly desire his way." But the words of the inheriting one are full of humility. For she does not ask for her way to be made straight on account of her own righteousness, but on account of the enemies who live with impiety, who unjustly war against her. Then he also teaches in detail their practices of wickedness. 10. "Because there is no truth in their mouth." With falsehood, he says, they continually pollute their tongue. "Their heart is vain." Their thoughts agree with their words, and the mind agrees with the mouth. 11. "Their throat is an open sepulchre." Closed tombs have a hidden stench, but open ones send forth a great stench; such, he says, are the words they belch forth, full of all impiety and foul odor. Through these words he alludes to blasphemies against God, and the words of intemperance and licentiousness. "With their tongues they have used deceit; judge them, O God." The hidden things are more grievous than the uttered words; for using deceit they contrive countless things against their neighbors. "Let them fall from their own counsels, according to the multitude of their impieties cast them out." Let them be brought, therefore, under your judgment, O Master, and let them fail in what they contrive against us, and let them learn by experience that they are weaving a spider's web, and let them pay a penalty worthy of their daring deeds. "Because they have embittered you, Lord." For they have stirred up the war against you, having moved the battle line against those who are dedicated to you. 12. "And let all who hope in you be glad; they will rejoice forever, and you will dwell in them." And this will fill those who believe in you with gladness, and will grant them eternal delight; not their destruction, but your providence. For they are persuaded that you dwell in them, and walk among them, and you declare them a consecrated house. "And those who love your name will glory in you. [13.] Because you will bless

[ιγʹ.]
