For if they cried out, moved of themselves, they showed in deed the result of the prophecy and became witnesses of the truth. But if they offered the doxology, urged on by his invisible power, so too they provided a mark of his divine authority. 185Jo 12, 14-15 That he might fulfill the prophecy, he sat on the donkey, but since it was possible for anyone who wished, having sat on a donkey, to falsely claim such a prophecy for himself, the crowds, in that they came to acclaim him either willingly or by the invisible power of Christ, showed that the substance of the prophecy was spoken of him. 186Jo 12, 16 From the wonders that he was doing, they knew that he was the Christ, but after his resurrection they surely acquired the knowledge of him from the testimony of the scriptures. 187 Jo 12, 17 From this, therefore, it is possible to know that the crowd did not believe without judgment, but some saw, and others heard from those who had seen, that he raised Lazarus. 188 Jo 12, 19 Considering the gain of those who believed a loss, the Pharisees said these things. 189 Jo 12, -24 As the report spread everywhere, Greeks therefore also came. Of these, they approached Philip of Bethsaida, saying: Sir, we wish to see Jesus. And Philip communicates with Andrew, and both report to the teacher. And Jesus answers them, saying: The hour has come. 190Jo 12, 23-24 It was necessary for the redemption through suffering to happen first, which he endured for our sake and rose; and when after the resurrection he was glorified by all as the son of God, then also those from the nations were to be enlightened by the preaching. 191Jo 12, 24-25 He used the present example, wishing to signify that the multitudes were about to be benefitted through his suffering. If, therefore, even the son of God had not been willing, descending from his own dignity, to endure death, he would have remained alone in his own glory; but now, having deigned to suffer in the flesh out of love for us and having risen, he raised up all people with himself. Having revealed, therefore, the gain from his own suffering, he exhorts also those who believe in him to despise death. 192 Jo 12, 24-25 Having revealed the gain from his suffering through the things he said, he exhorts those who have believed in him to despise death in a like manner to him; for he who wishes to spare his soul here for a little while brings about its destruction for the future, but he who does not spare it in the present and despises life in this world acquires for himself incorruptible and eternal life in the future. 193 Jo 12, 25 He who has despised life in this world will inherit incorruptible life in the future. 194 Jo 12, 26 And he exhorts them to follow him, imitating his life and emulating the virtue of his conduct. And one might say to me that everyone who ever acts according to the word of God serves the Word and ministers to the son of God and follows him by doing nothing irrational; for it is not simply to follow while walking about
