to the storehouses, and plundering everything, to seize and depart, and the modius of grain came to be 400 silver coins. But the great Constantine granted a grain allowance to the churches in each city for the perpetual sustenance of widows and hostels, the poor, and the clergy. And the church in Antioch received thirty-six thousand modii of grain. In the same year, when a most violent earthquake occurred in Cyprus, the city of Salamis collapsed and destroyed a considerable multitude. Eulalius, bishop of Antioch, 3 years. 29. 31. 3. 14. 19. 4. 1. In this year Dalmatius was proclaimed caesar. And Calocaerus, having established a tyranny on the island of Cyprus, did not withstand the Roman attack; and having been defeated along with the instigators, he was killed in Tarsus of Cilicia, having been burned alive by Dalmatius caesar. In the same year Arius also, having been recalled from exile through a supposedly feigned repentance, and having been sent to Alexandria, was not received by Athanasius. 30. 32. 4. 15. 20. 5. 2. In this year the thirtieth anniversary of the most pious and victorious Constantine was held very lavishly. And a star 30 appeared in Antioch during the day in the sky in the eastern part, smoking greatly as from a furnace, from the third hour until the fifth hour. And Arius, along with Eusebius of Nicomedia and those of his opinion, were restored, having presented to the emperor who was thirsting for the unity of the divided, written statements of orthodoxy with oaths; and they persuaded him that they agreed with the fathers at Nicaea, lying. The emperor, having been misled by these things, became indignant against Athanasius, because he did not receive Arius and Euzoius, who had been deposed by Alexander, Euzoius being a deacon at that time. And Eusebius and those with him, having found a pretext, strove against Athanasius as the champion of the orthodox faith. Year of the world 5827. Year of the divine incarnation 327. Constantine, emperor of the Romans, year 32. 31. Shapur, king of the Persians, year 70. 33. Julius, bishop of Rome, year 15. 5. Alexander, bishop of Constantinople, year 23. 16. Maximus, bishop of Jerusalem, year 6. 1. Athanasius, bishop of Alexandria, year 46. 6. Eulalius, bishop of Antioch, year 3. 3. In this year, those around Eusebius of Nicomedia, along with the Meletians, having found an instrument of malice in the emperor's indignation which arose against Athanasius for not receiving Arius and Euzoius after their supposedly feigned conversion, conspired in the matters against Athanasius. And first, they slandered his ordination, although Apollinarius the Syrian testified greatly concerning the ordination of Athanasius; and second, concerning the linen vestment, which the enemies falsely accused the saint of imposing; third, concerning Philumenus, to whom they falsely said he sent much gold for a plot against the emperor. But the emperor, having summoned Athanasius and having found everything to be false, sent him away to Alexandria with letters and much honor. In the same year also the plot against Athanasius concerning Ischyras was concocted in the Mareotis. This Ischyras, having styled himself a priest, went about performing sacred rites; which Athanasius having learned, he prevented him 31 from this audacity through Macarius the presbyter. But he, having fled, went to 31 Eusebius of Nicomedia, accusing Athanasius of having broken the sacred vessels from the altar at the time of the mystery, and of having burned the sacred books through Macarius; and they fabricated the story of the notorious hand of Arsenius, that the saint had used it for magic, thus shamelessly slandering him. But the emperor, having learned of the slanders against Athanasius, first entrusts the investigation to his own nephew Dalmatius, who was in Antioch. But later he transfers the trial to Caesarea, which Athanasius postponed on account of Eusebius Pamphili, and is judged in Tyre by the adversaries of the truth, Eusebius of Nicomedia, I mean, having deceived the emperor with a supposed desire for the holy places that had been built and to be present for their dedication. whom he also dismissed with great honor, having ordered the charges against Athanasius to be dropped
