we are disturbed; if we consider that we ourselves will suffer this if we are negligent, who then will be so stone-hearted, that, with the example itself constantly turning the soul, he would fall into carelessness? It was possible, then, to extend the discourse to a greater length, but since it has been said by us for the sake of obedience alone and no other need, even these things have been written beyond what is necessary. For I know well that you yourself possess precisely all the virtue of compunction, and you could impart it to others even while silent, if only they were deemed worthy to live with your piety for a short while, and to see your crucified life. So that if those now living must learn compunction, they must go to your lodging; and those after them, must hear of your deeds; for I think the mere narration of your life will provide a great impulse towards this. Therefore I ask and beseech you to pay us the reward hereafter, and to give your prayers in return, so that we may not only speak about compunction, but also demonstrate this matter through our deeds; since teaching without doing not only brings no profit, but also brings great loss and condemnation to the one who manages his own life with such inattention. For not everyone, He says, who says to Me, Lord, Lord, but whoever does and teaches, he will be called great in the kingdom of heaven.
