we would have an excuse, having received so many benefits from him, and repaying him with the opposite? Did you see a God-loving mind, and how he is not proud, nor puts on airs for having nobly borne those blows beyond nature, nor does he consider such great patience to be a matter of wisdom and magnanimity, but as if paying off a necessary debt, and having suffered nothing unfitting, thus out of abundance he silenced the little woman? This also happened in the case of this woman. For when he saw her nobly bearing her childlessness, and falling down before God, he let loose the priest's servant, so as to provoke her even more. But the woman suffered none of these things, but having practiced bearing the revilings in her house, and having trained herself in the reproaches of her rival, she then stripped for such attacks fearlessly. Therefore also in the temple she showed much gentleness, bearing the taunts very bravely and with great spirit, those concerning drunkenness and drunken behavior. But there is nothing like hearing the words themselves. For when the servant said: Put away your wine from you, and depart from the presence of the Lord, Hannah answered and said, No, my lord. She called the one who insulted her, "master." And she did not say what many people say: Did the priest say these things to me? Did he who teaches others mock me for drunkenness and drunken behavior? but she considered only how she might refute the suspicion, even though it was not true. 5. But we often, when we are reviled, needing 54.650 to defend ourselves and be acquitted, kindle the fire, and like wild beasts we leap upon those who insult us, choking, dragging, demanding an account for what was said, and by these very things that we do, we confirm the suspicion against us. For if you want to show those who insult you that you are not drunk, show it through meekness and gentleness, not through insult, nor through reviling. For if you strike the one who insults you, all will condemn you for drunkenness; but if you bear it nobly, you will refute the wicked suspicion by your deeds; which is what the woman did then, and by saying, No, my lord, she showed through the facts themselves that the suspicion was false. But whence did the priest suspect this at all? For did he see her laughing? or dancing? or wandering about and falling down? or uttering some shameful and ignoble word? Whence then did he have this suspicion? Not simply, nor as it chanced, but from the time of day; for it was midday when she was making her prayer. From where is this clear? From the things said above. For it says, Hannah arose after they had eaten in Shiloh, and after they had drunk, and stood before the Lord. Do you see? What all make a time of relaxation, this she made a time of prayer, and after the meal she ran to supplication, and sent forth springs of tears, and offered a sober and watchful mind, and after the meal she prayed so earnestly as to receive a gift beyond nature, and to release her barrenness, and to correct her weakened nature. These things, therefore, we have gained from the woman, so as to know how to pray after a feast. For one who is prepared for this will never fall into drunkenness and drunken behavior, will never be burst by gluttony, but having the expectation of prayer placed upon his thoughts like a bridle, he will partake of all the things set before him with the proper measure, and will fill his soul with much blessing, and his body with much. For a table beginning from prayer, and ending in prayer, will never be in want, but more lavishly than a spring will bring us all good things. Let us not then overlook so great a profit. For it is strange that our servants, if ever they should receive from us a portion of the things set before them, both give thanks to us and depart with praise; but that we, enjoying so many good things, should not render so much honor to God, and this, when we are about to enjoy much security. For where there is prayer and thanksgiving, the grace of the Holy Spirit comes, and demons are put to flight, and every opposing power

Ἂν μὲν γὰρ τυπτήσῃς τὸν ὑβρικότα, μέθην σου καταγνώσονται πάντες· ἂν δὲ γενναίως ἐνέγκῃς, ἀπεκρούσω διὰ τῶν ἔργων τὴν πονηρὰν ὑποψίαν· ὅπερ οὖν καὶ ἡ γυνὴ τότε ἐποίησε, καὶ εἰποῦσα, Οὐχὶ, κύριε, δι' αὐτῶν τῶν πραγμάτων ἐδείκνυ, ὅτι ψευδὴς ἦν ἡ ὑποψία. Πόθεν δὲ ὅλως καὶ ὑπώπτευσεν ὁ ἱερεὺς τοῦτο; μὴ γὰρ γελῶσαν εἶδε; μὴ γὰρ χορεύουσαν; μὴ γὰρ περιφερομένην καὶ καταπίπτουσαν; μὴ γὰρ αἰσχρόν τι καὶ ἀνελεύθερον φθεγγομένην ῥῆμα; Πόθεν οὖν ταύτην ἔσχε τὴν ὑπόνοιαν; Οὐχ ἁπλῶς, οὐδὲ ὡς ἔτυχεν ἐκεῖνος, ἀλλ' ἀπὸ τοῦ καιροῦ τῆς ἡμέρας· καὶ γὰρ ἦν τὸ μεσημβρινὸν, ὅτε τὴν εὐχὴν ἐποιεῖτο. Πόθεν τοῦτο δῆλον; Ἀπ' αὐτῶν τῶν ἄνωθεν εἰρημένων. Ἀνέστη γὰρ, φησὶν, Ἄννα μετὰ τὸ φαγεῖν αὐτοὺς ἐν Σηλὼμ, καὶ μετὰ τὸ πιεῖν, καὶ κατέστη ἐνώπιον Κυρίου. Ὁρᾷς; Ὃν ἀνέσεως καιρὸν ποιοῦνται ἅπαντες, τοῦτον εὐχῆς ἐποιεῖτο αὕτη καιρὸν, καὶ μετὰ τράπεζαν πρὸς ἱκετηρίαν ἀνέτρεχε, καὶ πηγὰς ἠφίει δακρύων, καὶ διάνοιαν παρεῖχε σωφρονοῦσαν καὶ νήφουσαν, καὶ μετὰ τράπεζαν οὕτως ἐκτενῶς ηὔξατο, ὡς δῶρον ὑπὲρ φύσιν λαβεῖν, καὶ λῦσαι στείρωσιν, καὶ φύσιν ἀσθενήσασαν διορθῶσαι. Ταῦτα τοίνυν ἀπὸ τῆς γυναικὸς ἐκερδάναμεν, ὥστε εἰδέναι μετ' εὐωχίαν εὔχεσθαι. Ὁ γὰρ πρὸς τοῦτο παρεσκευασμένος, οὐδέποτε εἰς μέθην καὶ παροινίαν ἐκπεσεῖται, οὐδέποτε ὑπὸ ἀδδηφαγίας διαῤῥαγήσεται, ἀλλὰ τὴν προσδοκίαν τῆς εὐχῆς ἀντὶ χαλινοῦ τοῖς λογισμοῖς ἐπικειμένην ἔχων, μετὰ τοῦ προσήκοντος μέτρου τῶν παρακειμένων ἅψεται πάντων, καὶ πολλῆς μὲν τὴν ψυχὴν, πολλῆς δὲ τὸ σῶμα ἐμπλήσει τῆς εὐλογίας. Τράπεζα γὰρ ἀπὸ εὐχῆς ἀρχομένη, καὶ εἰς εὐχὴν καταλήγουσα, οὐδέποτε ὑστερηθήσεται, ἀλλὰ πηγῆς δαψιλέστερον ἅπαντα ἡμῖν οἴσει τὰ ἀγαθά. Μὴ δὴ τοσοῦτον παρορῶμεν κέρδος. Καὶ γὰρ ἄτοπον τοὺς μὲν οἰκέτας τοὺς ἡμετέρους, εἴ ποτέ τι τῶν παρακειμένων λάβοιεν παρ' ἡμῶν μέρος, εὐχαριστεῖν τε ἡμῖν καὶ μετ' εὐφημίας ἀναχωρεῖν· ἡμᾶς δὲ τοσούτων ἀπολαύοντας ἀγαθῶν μηδὲ τοσαύτην ἀποδιδόναι τῷ Θεῷ τὴν τιμὴν, καὶ ταῦτα, μέλλοντας πολλῆς ἀπολαύσεσθαι τῆς ἀσφαλείας. Ὅπου γὰρ εὐχὴ καὶ εὐχαριστία, ἁγίου Πνεύματος παραγίνεται χάρις, καὶ φυγαδεύονται δαίμονες, καὶ πᾶσα ἀντικειμένη δύναμις
