him; but they did not pay attention, nor were they persuaded. And your hands on your head. For this is the manner of those who mourn, when they lament things that cannot be accomplished. Just as he said long ago, having called upon the Assyrian, as Ahaz appears to have done, in the end you have suffered all terrible things from this very Assyrian; for not only did he take the ten tribes, but also many cities of Judea. The same things, he says, you will also suffer from the Egyp 64.780 tians, so that he might say: To your folly will be the hope in the Egyptians in your speaking, for shamelessness is suited to lawlessness.
CHAPTER 3.
If a man sends away his wife. What does the example mean? One first and great thing, that what a man does not endure, this I endured, when you became other men's, I called again, I received again. And yet in that case the sending away is the husband's, he hating her, but in this case it is not the husband's, but the wife's, so that the example is not even equal; for he did not send her away, but she abandoned him. And you have committed fornication with many shepherds ... says the Lord. The phrase, "says", should not be read with what is above but with what is below, that is, the Lord says to you. He has set down the word given by Moses, that if a wife who is not pleasing is divorced by her husband, then becomes another's, and being hated again departs from him also, it is not permitted for the first to take her back. This law, then, he says, is established for what is written; but you, he says, having been sent away by me many times on account of your lawlessness, and calling upon foreigners, that is Assyrians, and Egyptians; for he always calls kings shepherds, being tested in calamities long ago you fled to me again, and I provided my support. Some say that you, shamelessly transgressing, come into my house, not even imitating women, who are ashamed to return to the men who have already sent them away. Every woman who separates from her husband and is joined to another cannot return to the other husband, the law preventing this; but you, having left me who was joined to you according to the law, were joined to many unholy demons, then again, receiving a perception of the harm, you returned to me, and I did not push you away, and if you think I do not say these things simply, lift up your eyes to the straight road, and see where you were not defiled. Lift up your eyes to the straight road, and see. See, he calls her as a witness of her own sins, he makes her her own accuser; again it cried out, he says, every road accuses; see where you were not defiled, do you see how he makes the proofs clearer, and then brings on the judgment? On the roads you sat. Here he wishes to show the great zeal concerning sins, that she worked these things with great eagerness. And you defiled the land with your fornications. And yet the land would never be defiled by sins, but he says this so as to heighten the matter. And see where you were not defiled, on the roads you sat. Instead of "you were defiled." But you were impious then too, yet you feigned honor towards me by your arrival at the 64.781 temple; but now you have gone into an endless depth of evils, having filled every place with your lawlessness. On her roads you sat, like a desolate crow, that is, you have become like a solitary crow, deprived of every good; and having been made a captive by many enemies, and plundered with various deaths, and you still held on to wickedness. And you had many shepherds, the face of a prostitute became yours. You did not harm me, but you were harmed, you have suffered terrible things, for it is the role of shepherds to shepherd, not to hinder. This terrible thing

Τί βούλεται τὸ ὑπόδειγμα; Ἓν πρῶτον, καὶ μέγα, ὅτι Ὅπερ ἀνὴρ οὐκ ἀνέχεται, τοῦτο ἠνεσχόμην ἐγὼ, γιγνομένοις ὑμῖν ἀνδράσιν ἑτέροις, πάλιν ἐκάλουν, πάλιν ἐδεχόμην. Καίτοι ἐκεῖ τοῦ ἀνδρός ἐστιν ἡ ἀποστολὴ, αὐτοῦ μισοῦντος, ἐνταῦθα δὲ οὐχὶ τοῦ ἀνδρὸς, ἀλλὰ τῆς γυναικὸς, ὥστε οὐδὲ ἴσον τὸ ὑπόδειγμα· οὐ γὰρ αὐτὸς αὐτὴν ἐξαπέστειλεν, ἀλλ' αὐτὴ αὐτὸν ἐγκατέλιπεν. Ἐνταῦθα βούλεται δεῖξαι τὴν πολλὴν περὶ τὰ ἁμαρτήματα σπουδὴν, ὅτι μετὰ πολλῆς τῆς προθυμίας ταῦτα εἰργάζετο. Καὶ ἐμίανας τὴν γῆν ἐν ταῖς πορνείαις σου. Καὶ μὴν ἀπὸ ἁμαρτημάτων οὐκ ἄν ποτε μιανθείη ἡ γῆ, ἀλλ' ὥστε ἐπᾶραι τὸ πρᾶγμα, λέγει. Καὶ ἴδε ποῦ οὐχὶ ἐξεφύρης, ἐπὶ ταῖς ὁδοῖς ἐκάθισας. Ἀντὶ τοῦ ἐμιάνθης. Ἀλλ' ἠσέβεις μὲν καὶ τότε, ὅμως δὲ καθυπεκρίνου τὴν εἰς ἐμὲ τιμὴν τῇ εἰς τὸν 64.781 ναὸν ἀφίξει· νῦν δὲ εἰς ἀπέραντον ἐχώρησας βυθὸν κακῶν, πάντα τόπον ἐμπλήσασα τῆς παρανομίας σου. Ἐπὶ ταῖς ὁδοῖς ἐκάθισας αὐτῆς, ὡσεὶ κορώνη ἐρημουμένη, τουτέστιν ὡς μεμονωμένη κορώνη γέγονας παντὸς καλοῦ στερηθεῖσα· ὑπὸ πολλῶν τε ἐχθρῶν αἰχμάλωτος γενομένη, καὶ διαφόρῳ θανάτῳ ληϊζομένη, καὶ ἔτι ἀντείχου τῆς κακίας.
