the melons, the leeks, the onions, the garlic. But now our soul is dried up; there is nothing at all but this manna before our eyes. But as he was burdened by their opposition, and pleaded with God, He adds to him seventy elders, so that they might assist him in his rule. Then when Jesus the son of Nun said: Forbid the son of Eldad and Medad from prophesying, Moses said: Are you jealous for my sake? And who will make all the Lord's people prophets? Then quails came up from the Lord, and they ate. And the meat was still in their teeth, before it was consumed. This is what is said in the psalm: While the food was still in their mouths, the wrath of God came upon them; and slew the wealthiest of them. And that place was called the graves of craving. Then Miriam spoke against Moses, saying: Has God spoken only to him? And God, having said that he had spoken thus to him alone of the prophets, inflicted leprosy upon Miriam, and when Moses prayed for her, he did not allow her to be cleansed before she had spent seven days outside the camp. So he sends some from the people to spy out the land of Canaan. And having spied it out, they brought back a cluster of grapes from there, and they marveled at the 56.332 land. For they made the people afraid, as the men there were warlike. But Caleb the son of Jephunneh, and Joshua the son of Nun, being themselves also of the spies, encouraged the people. But they came to stone them; but God, being angry, said that those who had murmured should not enter into the land of promise, except their children, and Caleb son of Jephunneh, and Joshua. And for forty years, he says, they shall be in the desert, until the children grow up, according to the number of the days in which they spied out the land. Then all the spies died, except Caleb and Joshua the son of Nun, and the people mourned. They went up against Amalek against the will of God, and the ark remained in the camp with Moses. And Amalek came out, and cut them down. He gives commands concerning whole burnt offerings, concerning first-fruits, concerning sacrifices for trespasses. Someone was caught gathering sticks on the sabbath, and was stoned. They are commanded to make tassels on the corners of their garments. The things concerning Korah and Dathan and Abiram; their rebellion, the punishment they received. But the rest of the people, when these things had happened, were not brought to their senses, but again rose up against Moses, and fourteen thousand seven hundred died. Then the rod of Aaron budded. He speaks and commands what the Levites and the high priest ought to receive. And he makes a law concerning the ashes of the heifer, from which the water of sprinkling was made. And the heifer itself seemed to some to be a type of the passion of our Lord Jesus Christ. And from the ashes of the heifer he who was unclean from a dead body was purified. And the people came to Kadesh, and there Miriam died, and was buried. There being no water, the Jews again murmur; and Moses and Aaron are commanded to bring water out of the rock. Moses struck it, saying: Shall we bring water for you out of this rock? And water came out. And the Lord said to Moses and Aaron: Because you did not believe in me, to sanctify me in the sight of the children of Israel, therefore you shall not bring this congregation into the land which I have given them. Moses sends an embassy to the king of Edom, that he might let them pass; but he did not permit it; and the sons of Israel turned away from him. And when they came to Mount Hor, at the command of God, Moses, taking Aaron and Eleazar his son, led them up to the mountain; and he clothed Eleazar with his garments. And Aaron died on the mountain. And the people wept for thirty days. They took the Canaanite, and utterly destroyed him. And coming to the Red Sea, they went around the land of Edom, and became discouraged, and murmured against Moses; and God sent deadly serpents upon them. And Moses prayed; and he made a bronze serpent, having been commanded by God. And he who was bitten, when he looked upon the serpent, lived. Concerning this serpent it is said in the Gospel: As Moses lifted up the serpent in
