43. That it is better to be well-shepherded than to shepherd those who are unwilling; for there will be no profit for one who is eager to save others, but has destroyed himself through their leadership. 44. What "according to the image" is, and how man is rightly understood as an image of the

prototype; and that he who loves his enemies as benefactors is an imitator of God, and having thus become a partaker of the Holy Spirit, he becomes a god by adoption and by grace, being known only to those who are energized by the Holy Spirit. 45. Concerning the most exact theology; and that he who does not see the light of the

glory of God is worse than the blind. 46. (30) A confession joined to a prayer; and concerning the connection

of the Holy Spirit and dispassion. 47. A clear contemplation of the spiritual paradise; and concerning the in it

tree of life. 48. That glory and honor for every man who is insulted and suffers

wrongly for a commandment of God is the dishonor for the sake of that very commandment of God; and a dialogue with one's own soul, teaching the inexhaustible riches of the Spirit. 49. That sometimes, through the care and

correction of his neighbor, the teacher is dragged down into the weakness of the passion that is in the other. 50. Concerning contemplation of God and divine things and the Holy Spirit's

wondrous energy; and concerning the properties of the Holy and Consubstantial Trinity; and that he who has not managed to enter the kingdom of heaven will not be profited at all, even if he should be outside the torments of Hades. 51. That when the Holy Spirit shines in us, all the things of the

passions are put to flight as darkness by the light; but when He withdraws His rays, we are assailed by these and by evil thoughts. 52. Concerning theology; and that it is not permitted for one who has not been changed by participation in the Holy

Spirit and become a god by adoption in knowledge to teach divine things to men. 53. The discourse in the form of a dialogue between God and the father of the discourses; and

how this divine father, being illumined by the Holy Spirit, spoke with God, and was initiated by Him into things divine and human. 54. That to each of men God has given the gift through the Holy Spirit fittingly and for

his benefit, to work not as he himself wishes, but as he was predestined by Him, so that there may not be an empty place in His church. 55. That for those who have kept holy baptism pure (31) the Holy Spirit

remains; but from those who have defiled it, He departs. 56. A prayer to God for the things that have happened to him, both suppliant and

eucharistic.
