of his own manner; "For you shall make," he says, "the sons of Israel reverent." Let him be wise, humble-minded, instructive in the Lord's disciplines, of sound judgment, detached from all the wicked practices in life and from all gentile desires. Let him be approachable, quick to discern the wicked and to guard himself from them, while being a friend to all, a just judge, and whatever good things are or exist among men, let the bishop possess these in himself. For being a shepherd blameless of injustice, he will compel his own disciples, and by his conduct will exhort them to become worthy imitators of his own deeds, as the prophet somewhere says: "And it shall be, as with the priest, so with the people." For our Lord and teacher Jesus Christ, the Son of God, began first to do and then to teach, as it says somewhere: "which Jesus began both to do and to teach." Therefore he says: "But whoever does and teaches them, he shall be called great in the kingdom of God." For you, the bishops, must be watchmen for the people, because you also have Christ as your watchman. Therefore, you also become good watchmen for the people of God, for the Lord says through Ezekiel, speaking to each of you: "Son of man, I have made you a watchman for the house of Israel; and you shall hear a word from my mouth, and you shall keep it and declare it from me. When I say to the lawless man: You shall surely die, and you have not spoken to warn the lawless man from his lawlessness, that lawless man will die in his lawlessness, and I will require his blood at your hand; but if you warn the lawless man to turn from his way, and he does not turn, he himself will die in his lawlessness, and you will have saved your soul. Likewise, if a sword of war is coming, and the people set up a watchman for protection, and seeing it coming he does not give a warning and it takes a soul, that soul is taken in its sin, but its blood will be required from the watchman's hand, because he did not sound the trumpet; but if he sounds the horn, and the one who hears does not take heed, and the sword comes and takes him, his blood will be upon him, because he did not take heed when he heard the horn; but the one who took heed has saved his soul, and the watchman, because he gave the signal, shall surely live." The sword is the judgment, but the trumpet is the holy
