being his own”; does he then not know those who are not? And “depart from me, you workers of lawlessness; for I never knew 20.10 you”; is there then ignorance in the son of God? And again “You only have I known of all the nations.” Does he then not know the other nations? May it not be so. But the divine scripture knows a knowledge, one according to perception, another according to action. 21.1 Since, therefore, the only-begotten, fulfilling the will of the Father *, has already shown that all things are accomplished, * for the Father knew the hour and the day, he knew it both according to knowledge and according to action; for he himself knows all things and in the Son's saying "the Father has given all judgment to the Son," even though not judging, through having given it to the Son he himself judges; for God has not been alienated from judging those who 21.2 are judged, and in the Father not judging, he has already judged. But the Son knows when he is coming; for he himself brings the day and he himself sets it, and leads it and completes it. For he says "that day comes as a thief in the night" and he says "you are not in the night, that the day should overtake 21.3 you in darkness." If then the servants of Christ are children of the day, does the Son himself who brings the day not know it, so that the day might overtake him and not rather he himself bring the day? Who, thinking these things, will not blaspheme, considering things that are not fitting concerning the Father 21.4 and the Son? And the Father indeed knows the day and the hour in two ways, according to perception and according to action. For he knows when it is coming and again he has already judged, having appointed the Son to judge, and he knew it 21.5 according to action. But the Son of God knows when he is coming and he himself brings it and does not not know it, but he has not yet performed it according to knowledge, that is, he has not yet known it according to action. For the impious are still impious and the faithless are still faithless and the evil-believing blaspheme and the devil is at work and sins occur and injustice prevails and the judgment is patient, until he comes and knows it according to action and carries out the vengeance and saves those who in truth hope in him and do not blaspheme his divinity and that of the Father and of the Holy Spirit. 22.1 But from the holy angels such worth is lacking in two ways. For they are honorable, having acquired this from the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit; but this is lacking to them; for they do not know when the appointed things will happen. For the Father has set the times in his own authority. But if the Father is in the Son and the Son is in the Father, then the authority that is in the Father is not lacking 22.2 from the Son. But it is lacking from the angels; for angels and archangels and powers are created, but the Father is uncreated, the Son 22.3 is uncreated, the Spirit of God is uncreated. Therefore the angels know neither according to perception nor according to action the day and the hour. For they do not know when the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit wish to bring the day, and they do not know it according to the knowledge of action; for they have not yet been commanded to go out and gather up like tares and bind them in bundles 22.4 to burn with unquenchable fire. Therefore they have neither yet acted nor do they know, but the Father knows and has acted; but the Son knows, but has not yet acted. This is the meaning of "if not the Father alone, neither the angels 22.5 nor the Son." Let us understand the power of the scripture, so that the letter may not become death for us. "For the letter," he says, "kills, but the spirit gives life." Let us receive the spirit, so that we may benefit from the letter. For the letter does not kill, for in the letter is life; but it kills the one who approaches the letter without understanding and does not have the interpreting spirit, which opens the letter and reveals 22.6 what is in it. Therefore this holy Father gave his only-begotten true Son, begotten from him, and his Holy Spirit to his holy church in one knowledge of concord, in one bond
