armed with ways of good will, they inscribed the emperor as a teacher of a godly life. 9.12 And the emperor honored the victory-bringing sign, having learned by experience of the divinity in it; for indeed, before this multitudes of the enemy's army gave way, before this the boasts of those who fought against God were destroyed, before this the tongues of the blasphemous and impious were silenced, before this barbarian tribes were subjugated, before this powers of unseen demons were driven out, before this the games of superstitious deceit were exposed, to this the emperor, rendering the end of all good things as a kind of debt, erected victory monuments everywhere on earth, commanding all with a rich and royal hand that temples and sacred precincts and holy houses of prayer be established. 9.13 And immediately, in the midst of the very provinces and cities, were raised up the magnificent works of the emperor’s great-mindedness, and in a short time these shone forth throughout every nation, bringing with them the refutation of the godless tyranny. For those who a little before, through the desperation of their souls, had rushed to fight against God, raging like mad dogs against the inanimate buildings, because it was not possible for them to do so against God himself, unleashed their fury, and then hurling the houses of prayer down from on high to the ground and digging them up from their very foundations, they presented the spectacle of a city captured by enemies. And this was for them the drama of their evils, through which, as if defending themselves against the divine, they immediately received the experience of their madness. Not yet then had a short time passed for them, when with a single blast of a God-sent tempest he made them disappear, so that neither family, nor seed, nor any remnant of their memory was left behind among men, but that all of them, though set apart in great number, were utterly extinguished in a short time, being punished by God-sent scourges. 9.14 But while these found such an end for their god-fighting madness, he who put forward the saving trophy, he alone, yet not alone, but with the Only One being with him and working with him, made the new buildings of those that had been captured a little before much better, the second far more precious than the first, here brightening his own namesake city with various churches of God, there honoring the capital of the Bithynians with the greatest and most beautiful, and adorned the most preeminent of the other nations with similar ones. 9.15 And taking two exceptional portions of the East, the one in the nation of the Palestinians, as if from here the life-giving stream had gushed forth like a spring to all, and the other in the eastern metropolis which bears the namesake of Antiochus, here, as at the head of all the nations here, he dedicated a certain divine and unique creation for the sake of its size and beauty; enclosing the entire temple with long outer walls, and within, raising the palace to an immense height, he decorated it in the shape of an octagon, and surrounding this with many chambers and exedrae in a circle, he crowned it with beauties of every kind. 9.16 These things, then, were thus accomplished, but the things in the nation of the Palestinians, in the midst of the royal hearth of the Hebrews, at the very saving Martyrion, an immense house of prayer and holy temple to the saving sign, he adorned with rich and lavish munificence, and a memorial full of everlasting memory, and the very trophies of the great Savior over death, he honored with embellishments beyond all description. 9.17 And selecting three places in this land, honored by three mystic caves, he adorned these with rich buildings, bestowing fitting honor on the cave of the first theophany, venerating the memory of the final ascension on the summit of the mount, and in the middle, exalting the saving victories of the whole contest. All these things indeed the emperor adorned, proclaiming the saving sign to all. 9.18 But piety, bestowing reciprocal gifts upon him, increases his whole house and family, and strengthens the throne of his kingdom for long periods of years, to his good children and to his own family and to their successions the

τρόποις εὐνοίας ἀγαθῆς καθωπλισμένοι, βασιλέα διδάσκαλον θεοσεβοῦς ἐπεγράφοντο βίου. 9.12 ὁ δὲ βασιλεὺς τὸ νικοποιὸν ἐτίμα σημεῖον, ἔργῳ τὴν πεῖραν τῆς ἐν αὐτῷ θεότητος μαθών· καὶ γὰρ δὴ τούτῳ πλήθη πολεμίου στρατιᾶς ὑπεχώρει, τούτῳ θεομάχων μεγαλαυχίαι καθῃροῦντο, τούτῳ δυσφήμων καὶ δυσσεβῶν γλῶτται κατεσιγάζοντο, τούτῳ βάρβαρα φῦλα καθυπετάττετο, τούτῳ δυνάμεις ἀφανῶν δαιμόνων ἠλαύνοντο, τούτῳ παιδιαὶ δεισιδαίμονος ἀπάτης ἠλέγχοντο, τούτῳ τὸ πάντων ἀγαθῶν τέλος οἷόν τι χρέος βασιλεὺς ἀποδιδοὺς ἁπανταχοῦ γῆς στήλας ἐπινικίους ἱδρύετο, πλουσίᾳ καὶ βασιλικῇ χειρὶ νεὼς καὶ τεμένη ἱερά τε προσευκτήρια συνίστασθαι τοῖς πᾶσι διακελευόμενος. 9.13 ὑψοῦτο δὲ παραχρῆμα μέσαις αὐταῖς ἐπαρχίαις τε καὶ πόλεσι βασιλικῆς μεγαλονοίας μεγαλουργήματα, ἐν ὀλίγῳ τε ταῦτα κατὰ πᾶν ἔθνος διέλαμπεν, ἀθέου τυραννίδος τὸν ἔλεγχον ἐφελκόμενα· οἱ μὲν γὰρ ψυχῆς ἀπονοίᾳ πρὸ μικροῦ θεομαχεῖν ὡρμημένοι κυνῶν δίκην λυττῶντες κατὰ τῶν ἀψύχων οἰκοδομημάτων, ὅτι μὴ κατ' αὐτοῦ θεοῦ δυνατὸν ἦν αὐτοῖς, τοὺς θυμοὺς ἠφίεσαν, εἶτ' ἐξ ὕψους εἰς ἔδαφος καταρρίπτοντες ἐξ αὐτῶν τε βάθρων ἀνασκάπτοντες τὰ προσευκτήρια ἑαλωκυίας ὑπὸ πολεμίων πόλεως παρεῖχον θέαν. καὶ τοῦτ' ἦν αὐτοῖς τῶν κακῶν τὸ δρᾶμα, δι' οὗ τὸ θεῖον ὥσπερ ἀμυνόμενοι τῆς φρενοβλαβείας αὐτίκα τὴν πεῖραν ἐλάμβανον. οὔπω δ' οὖν αὐτοῖς βραχὺς διῄει χρόνος, καὶ μιᾷ ῥιπῇ θεηλάτου καταιγίδος ἀφανεῖς ἐποίει, ὡς μὴ γένος, μὴ σπέρμα, μηδέ τι λείψανον τῆς αὐτῶν μνήμης ἐν ἀνθρώποις ἀπολειφθῆναι ἄρδην δ' ἐν βραχεῖ τοὺς πάντας καίπερ εἰς πλῆθος ἀφωρισμένους θεηλάτοις μάστιξι τιμωρουμένους ἀποσβῆναι. 9.14 ἀλλ' οἵδε μὲν θεομάχου λύττης τοιοῦτον εὕραντο τέλος, ὁ δὲ τὸ σωτήριον τρόπαιον προβεβλημένος μόνος αὐτός, οὐ μὴν μόνος συνόντος δὲ καὶ συμπράττοντος αὐτῷ τοῦ μόνου, τῶν μικρῷ πρόσθεν ἑαλωκότων τὰ νέα πολὺ κρείττονα τὰ δεύτερα μακρῷ τῶν πρώτων ἀπέφαινε τιμιώτερα, ὧδε μὲν τὴν ἐπώνυμον αὐτῷ πόλιν διαφόροις ἐκκλησίαις θεοῦ φαιδρύνων, ὧδε δὲ τὴν Βιθυνῶν ἄρχουσαν μεγίστῃ τιμῶν καὶ περικαλλεστάτῃ, καὶ τῶν δὲ λοιπῶν ἐθνῶν τὰς μάλιστα κρατιστευούσας τοῖς ὁμοίοις ἐκόσμει. 9.15 πάντων δ' ἐξαίρετα δύο τμήματα τῆς ἑῴας ἀπολαβών, τὸ μὲν ἐπὶ τοῦ Παλαιστινῶν ἔθνους ὡς ἂν ἐνθένδε τοῦ ζωοποιοῦ νάματος πηγῆς δίκην ἀνομβρήσαντος εἰς πάντας, τὸ δ' ἐπὶ τῆς ἀνατολικῆς μητροπόλεως ἣ τὴν ἐπώνυμον Ἀντιόχου κοσμεῖ προσηγορίαν, τῇδε μὲν ὥσπερ ἐν κεφαλῇ τῶν τῇδε ἐθνῶν ἁπάντων θεῖόν τι καὶ μονογενὲς χρῆμα μεγέθους ἕνεκα καὶ καλλονῆς ἀφιέρου· μακροῖς ἔξωθεν περιβόλοις τὸν πάντα νεὼν περιλαμβάνων, εἴσω δὲ τὸ ἀνάκτορον εἰς ἀμήχανον ἐπαίρων ὕψος, ἐν ὀκταέδρου μὲν σχήματι κατεποίκιλλεν, οἴκοις δὲ τοῦτο πλείοσιν ἐξέδραις τε ἐν κύκλῳ περιστοιχισάμενος, παντοίοις ἐστεφάνου κάλλεσιν. 9.16 τάδε μὲν οὖν ὧδε συνετελεῖτο, τὰ δ' ἐπὶ τοῦ Παλαιστινῶν ἔθνους τῆς Ἑβραίων βασιλικῆς ἑστίας ἐν μέσῳ κατ' αὐτὸ δὴ τὸ σωτήριον μαρτύριον οἶκον εὐκτήριον παμμεγέθη νεών τε ἅγιον τῷ σωτηρίῳ σημείῳ πλουσίαις καὶ δαψιλέσι κατεκόσμει φιλοτιμίαις, μνῆμά τε μνήμης αἰωνίου γέμον αὐτά τε τοῦ μεγάλου σωτῆρος τὰ κατὰ τοῦ θανάτου τρόπαια λόγου παντὸς κρείττοσιν ἐτίμα καλλωπίσμασιν. 9.17 τρεῖς δ' ἀπολαβὼν ἐν τῇδε χώρας τρισὶν ἄντροις μυστικοῖς τετιμημένας, πλουσίαις ταύτας οἰκοδομαῖς ἐκόσμει, τῷ μὲν τῆς πρώτης θεοφανείας ἄντρῳ τὰ τῆς καταλλήλου νέμων τιμῆς, τῷ δὲ τῆς ὑστάτης ἀναλήψεως τὴν ἐπὶ τῆς ἀκρωρείας μνήμην σεμνύνων, τῷ δὲ μέσῳ τοῦ παντὸς ἀγῶνος τὰς σωτηρίους ἀνυψῶν νίκας. ταῦτα δὴ πάντα βασιλεὺς ἐκόσμει τὸ σωτήριον εἰς ἅπαντας ἀνακηρύττων σημεῖον· 9.18 τὸ δὲ τῆς εὐσεβείας αὐτῷ τὰ ἀμοιβαῖα δωρούμενον οἶκον ἅπαντα καὶ γένος αὔξει, θρόνον τε βασιλείας μακραῖς ἐτῶν περίοδοις κρατύνει, παισὶν ἀγαθοῖς καὶ αὐτοῦ γένει διαδοχαῖς τε τούτων τοὺς
