he believed that by later making the patriarch bow 44 down for a blessing from him, not so much out of need as by flattery and by intense and inescapable insinuation, he would have sufficient and firm support in the votes. But when it was necessary also for the greater rites to be performed as was customary, the bishops were being rejected (and how could they not? when they were not even deemed worthy for the votes alone), to a certain bishop of Kozyle, who had been sent on a necessary embassy from the western parts, and who seemed untainted by what had been done long ago as being very much a stranger to our affairs, a sweet morsel, as they say (for there were some, as was said, who knew him completely, as serving the great lord Philip sacerdotally while he was alive, about whom we have already related, and when he was slain, with his head set forth on a golden platter, as it seemed good to his wife Phrantzaina, performing the funereal hymns in his memory), they entrust the matters of the ceremony of the one who was to be patriarch; Who indeed in the same month of Kronios, taking him, brings him into the monastery of the Prodromos of Petra with a few others, and finding a church in a vineyard, which also seemed to be unused, having performed the appropriate rites there, on the one hand he makes him a monk from among the laity, and on the other ordains him a deacon from a lector. And on the same day the emperor also puts him 45 forward as patriarch. Thenceforth he, having been granted permission through exhortations to perform his duties, Germanos, the disciple of Akakios, a pious and for the most part reserved man who seemed to be of two minds about the things done yesterday, he too being entirely pious and simple in character, so as to have been ranked among the spiritual men by the one who had been patriarch, at the same time, along with the bishop of Kozyle, they vote him president of Herakleia in Thrace and also his own consecrator, and at the same time he is urged by the bishop, as the occasion improvised, to ordain him as metropolitan; and the divine church of the old Hagia Eirene, after the holy and mystical table had first been thoroughly washed and consecrated with certain prayers, saw his ordination. and then that man himself, they ordain the patriarch first as a priest, and then on the bright feast of the Palms as a high priest. And it would not be amiss to speak a little also about the ordination.

15. The holy table of the Great Church had been purified with both prayers and consecrations, and gathered around the one to be ordained were those who also were inclined to the schismatics, men ignorant of the rites being performed, but who seemed to have been consumed by zeal. And the proof was their not knowing at all, not only the order of ordi 46 nation, but not even that of the sanctuary, so that because of this there was a danger that their strict observance would be overlooked. For their purpose was to forbid the clerics from being present or even casting a glance at the rites being performed, whoever he might be; but the necessity of the proceedings, so that the matters of the ceremony might somehow proceed smoothly, persuaded them that one of the clergy should be included, and in the very sanctuary, the greatest one, the ecclesiarch, for the purpose of assisting them both by acting and by teaching. And so for the present it seemed sufficient to them, if, by transgressing in part, they might preserve the whole. But the clergy of the church were altogether shut out, to the extent that even the Grand Logothete himself, with no one preventing him, but he himself judging his own absence worthy of the rites being performed, standing far off with the gate latched, could barely see and by his reserved manner showed their unworthiness; and stuffing themselves up somewhere in the catechumena, they had guards so as not to peep or see what was being done, as if from this would be prevented, forsooth, that which cannot be sub 47 jected to the worthy one, on account of the unworthiness of those present, through the goodness of the Spirit. And when the rites of the ceremony had been completed, and with three presanctified loaves, so that they would suffice for the three days of Holy Week, the pyx of the church was made sufficient, the patriarch immediately went to the emperor to celebrate the feast with him according to custom, but they were again shut out from the sacred assemblies, considering it as nothing
