My fellow servants, all who signed, we have anathematized those who, like Arius and Apollinarius, say there is one will and one energy, and do not confess our Lord and God according to each of the natures from which, in which, and which He is, as being by nature intelligent, and for this reason possessing in both a will and an energy for our salvation. 15Γ_060 And they say: If we are burdened by this, we do not eat, we do not drink; but let us rise up and have breakfast and enter. Let us say what we have heard. For this man has sold himself to Satan.
And rising up they had breakfast, and they entered with anger on the eve of the Exaltation of the precious and life-giving cross.
30. And on the following morning, Theodosius the consul went out to the aforementioned abba
Maximus, and took away everything he had, saying to him on behalf of the emperor: THEOD. Because you did not desire honor, it will be far from you. And go where
you judged yourself worthy to be, having the judgment of your disciples, the one in Mesembria, and the one in Perberis, who became the notary of our blessed grandmother. And the patricians were also there, that is, Troilus and Epiphanius, having said that
TRO.EPIPH. We are certainly bringing the two disciples, the one in Mesembria and the one in Perberis, and we will test them too, and we will see the outcome for them as well. However, so that you may see, lord abba, that if we get a little respite from the confusion of the nations, we are ready to deal with you, by the Holy Trinity, and the pope who is now puffed up, and all those there who are speaking, and your other disciples, and we will smelt all of you, each in his proper place, just as Martin was smelted.
And the said consul Theodosius, taking him, handed him over to soldiers, and they led him as far as Salembria.
31. And they remained there for two days, until one of the
soldiers went to the military camp, and said to the whole army, that "The monk who blasphemes the Theotokos is coming here," so that they might incite the army against the said abba Maximus, as one who blasphemes the Theotokos. And after two days the soldier returned, and took him into the military camp, and the general, or rather the general's deputy, being moved to compunction by God, sent 15Γ_062 to him the leaders of the bands, both presbyters and deacons, and the devout standard-bearers, whom the said abba Maximus, seeing them arrive, arose and made a prostration, and they prostrated in return, and they sat down, commanding him also to sit. And a certain very honorable old man said to him with much reverence:
Father, since some have caused us to be scandalized concerning your holiness, saying that you do not call our Lady the All-holy Virgin Theotokos, I adjure you by the holy and consubstantial and life-giving Trinity, to tell us the truth, and to wipe away this scandal from our hearts, so that we may not be harmed by being unjustly scandalized.
And making a prostration, he rose up, and stretching out his hands to heaven with tears, he said:
MAX. Whoever does not call our Lady, the all-hymned and all-holy and immaculate, and venerable to all intelligent nature, who became truly the natural mother of God, the maker of heaven and earth and the sea and all things
