history, the Egyptians do not have water from above, nor does rain fall in Egypt. Historically, therefore, when at that time the entire nature of the waters throughout Egypt was turned into blood by the command of Moses, so that even the fish, the water having been changed into a fleshy thickness, were destroyed, for the Hebrews drawing water it was not blood. Hence sorcery also had an opportunity with the water found among the Hebrews, to counterfeit the bloody water. But spiritually even now the same thing may be seen happening. For among those divided by contrary opinions, for some the stream of faith, which they draw through divine teaching, is drinkable and clear; but for those who are Egyptianizing with a wicked assumption, the water becomes corrupt blood. And often the sophistry of deceit attempts to make even the drink of the Israelites blood with the pollution of falsehood, that is, our word, and to show it to us as not being what it is. But it would not render the drink altogether useless, even if through deceit it readily reddens its appearance. For the Israelite drinks the true water, not turning to the appearance of the deceit. 17.149 PSALM 80. Verse 2. Shout for joy to the God of Jacob. They call the Savior the God of Jacob, the one who appeared to Jacob in the form of a man as an indication of the subsequent incarnation. And they command to shout for joy, sending up to him a hymn of victory, as to the one who destroyed him who has the power of death, as to the one who rescued from the tyranny of demons. For a shout of joy is a victory hymn, which also those saved from Babylon encourage one another to offer up to God who granted the victory. But more morally: let those who succeed, whose fruits come to the winepresses, hear the words: “Rejoice in God”; but let the one who has sinned and is in need of repentance and conversion not rejoice, but be sorrowful according to God. For godly sorrow produces repentance that leads to salvation without regret. And you, if helped by God you have made the harvest of fruits unto the holy winepresses, do not forget God, inasmuch as he becomes your helper. And if you are at a loss for words to be given worthily to God in thanksgiving, shout with a clear voice, with the heart crying out, surpassing the meanings of a word at a loss, and through the lack of words speaking secret and unutterable things. For if you go beyond what can be said, if you surpass what is reported, what is voiced through the mouth, and are able to hymn God with the mind alone, which is at a loss to impose its own movements upon speech, because the word in you is not able to bear the secret and divine things of the mind, you will shout for joy to the God of Jacob, as an imitator of the supplanter Jacob. PSALM 150. Verse 3. Praise him with the sound of the trumpet. Another says, with the sound of a horn. But this is a priestly instrument. For the priests used the trumpets, recalling the trumpets that were at Sinai. Therefore, according to the spiritual account concerning the making of trumpets, a trumpet must be fashioned, so that with its sound we may praise God. And such trumpets, I think, are also indicated in the passage: “The trumpet will sound, and the dead will be raised.” And there is a feast of the New Moon of the seventh month, a memorial of trumpets, as it is said: On the new moon, with the trumpet.
