of marriage; for it is not found among the fathers, and if it is found, it is rare, and this is not a law. You shall not dine with a woman except your mother and sister in the flesh, unless, I know not, some force and necessity should call, as the holy fathers exhort. You shall not have the habit of frequently going out and wandering about without necessity, abandoning your own flock, where even when you are staying in place the very diverse and hard-to-manage rational sheep may scarcely be saved. You will by all means keep to giving the catechesis three times a week and in the evening, since this is handed down from the fathers and is salutary. You shall not give what they call the small habit, then after a time another as the great; for the habit is one, just as baptism is one, as the holy fathers practiced. You shall not transgress the laws and canons of the fathers, especially those of our holy father Basil, but whatever you do or say, you shall do as having testimony from the Scriptures or from your patristic custom, without transgression of God's commandment. You shall not abandon your flock and move to another or rise to a greater dignity without your father's discernment. You shall not be familiar with a canoness nor visit a women's convent nor speak alone with a nun or a laywoman, unless some necessity should draw you, and then with two persons present from each side; for one, as they say, is easily influenced. You shall not open the door of the flock for the entry of any kind of woman without great necessity; but if you are able to receive her without being seen together, this is not to be rejected either. You shall not make for yourself or for your spiritual children a lodging in a secular house, in which there are women, visiting there frequently, but you shall choose among devout men to take care of your passing and necessary needs. You shall not get a young boy as a disciple in your cell with affection, but you shall have your service performed by an unsuspect person and by different brothers. You shall not possess extravagant and costly clothing, apart from your priestly vestments, but you shall dress and be shod in humble garments, in imitation of the fathers. You shall not be a delicate eater, neither at your own expense nor in the reception of guests; for this belongs to the portion of those who enjoy the present life. You shall not hoard gold in your monastery, but you shall give what is in excess of every kind to the poor at the opening of your courtyard as did the holy fathers. you shall not hold a secure place and the financial cares, but let all your care be concerning souls; you shall entrust the gold and things of need to the steward, to the cellarer, and as is fitting in each ministry, with you clearly having authority over all things and transferring as you wish each ministry to any person and receiving the account of each administration as you command. you shall not do or perform anything according to your own opinion in any matter, neither in going out nor in selling and buying, nor in receiving or rejecting a brother, nor in a change of ministry, nor in any other of the bodily matters, nor even, therefore, in spiritual failings, without the counsel of superiors in knowledge and piety, of one or two or even three or even more according to the underlying matter, as has been paternally commanded. All these things and whatever else you have received you shall keep and guard, that it may be well with you, and you will be prospered in the Lord all the days of your life; for may the contrary be far from both speech and thought.

What has happened to you, O most holy father, and why do you still insist so much after a first and second
