storing up the fruits of virtue. 9.19 And indeed this was the greatest proof of the power of Him who was honored, that by distributing the talents of justice equally, he brought the reward according to merit to each party. Therefore, for those who besieged the houses of prayer, the wages of impiety followed at their heels, and they were rendered rootless and homeless and hearthless and unseen immediately; but he who honored his own Master in all kinds of ways of piety, at one time raising up royal houses for Him, at another time revealing Him to his subjects through the dedications everywhere on earth, fittingly found Him to be the savior and guardian of his house, kingdom, and family. In this way the deeds of God were made manifest through the divinely-inspired virtue of the saving sign, 10.1 concerning which there would be a long account, handed down to the initiated of theological men; for this was truly a saving thing, a marvel to speak of but much more marvelous to consider, how when it appeared it alone covered all the things that had been falsely said about the gods from of old upon the earth, and consigned the error to darkness and oblivion, but shining as an intelligible light for the souls of men, it revealed to all the only true God. 10.2 Therefore, everyone, having changed for the better, spits upon the faces of dead idols, tramples on the unlawful rites of demons, and laughs at the ancient, ancestral deceit. And men, having established everywhere schools of sacred teachings in which they are educated by saving lessons, so as no longer to be terrified by the creation seen by the eyes of the flesh, nor, looking up at the sun and moon and stars, to limit their wonder to these things, but to confess the one beyond these, the unseen and invisible creator of the universe, having been taught to worship Him alone. 10.3 This great and wondrous sign has therefore appeared as the cause of so many good things for mankind, through which all that was evil is no more, and things that previously did not exist now shine forth among all with the rays of piety. 10.4 So then discourses and lessons and exhortations to a temperate and pious life are proclaimed to be heard by all nations, and the emperor himself proclaims them; but the greatest wonder is that so great an emperor cries out with a mighty voice to the whole world, like some interpreter of the all-sovereign God, calling back all those shepherded by him to the knowledge of the One who is. 10.5 And indeed, in the midst of the imperial palace, there are no longer, as before, trifles of godless men, but priests and worshipers of God hold festival, honored with hymns of imperial piety, and the one God himself, the king of the universe, is proclaimed to all, and the evangelical word of good things joins the race of men to the king of all, proclaiming the heavenly Father to be gracious and friendly to His sons on earth, and all kinds of choirs honor him with songs of victory, and the whole mortal race resounds in harmony with the angelic companies in heaven, and rational souls, through the bodies with which they are clothed as through musical instruments, send up to Him fitting hymns and the due praises of God; and at the same time, those who dwell in the east along with those allotted the west are instructed in his teachings in a single moment of time, and those in the south and those who have obtained the northern region sing harmonious melodies, pursuing the pious life in the same ways and with the same words, and praising the one God over all, and acknowledging the one only-begotten Savior as the cause of all good things, and recognizing the one reformer-emperor on earth and his God-beloved sons. 10.7 And he, like a wise pilot on the high-thwarted ship, riding above the rudders, steers a straight course, bringing by a fair wind all those under him to a safe and calm harbor, and God Himself, the great King, stretching forth His right hand to him from above, for the present establishes him as victor over all foes and enemies, increasing the power of his kingdom for long periods of years, and is about to show him a partner of better things

τῆς ἀρετῆς καρποὺς ταμιευόμενον. 9.19 καὶ δὴ τοῦτ' ἦν τὸ μέγιστον τῆς τοῦ τιμωμένου δυνάμεως δεῖγμα, ὅτι δὴ δικαιοσύνης ἐξ ἴσου νέμων τὰ τάλαντα τὴν κατ' ἀξίαν ἀμοιβὴν ἑκατέρῳ τάγματι προσῆγεν. διὸ τοῖς μὲν τοὺς εὐκτηρίους οἴκους πολιορκήσασι παρὰ πόδας εἵπετο τἀπίχειρα τῆς δυσσεβείας, ἄρριζοί τε καὶ ἄοικοι ἀνέστιοί τε καὶ ἀφανεῖς καθίσταντο παραχρῆμα· ὁ δὲ τὸν αὐτοῦ δεσπότην παντοίοις τρόποις εὐσεβείας τιμῶν, καὶ τοτὲ μὲν οἴκους αὐτῷ βασιλικοὺς ἀνυψῶν, τοτὲ δὲ τοῖς ἁπανταχοῦ γῆς ἀφιερώμασι τοῖς ἀρχομένοις ἀναφαίνων, εἰκότως αὐτὸν οἴκου, βασιλείας καὶ γένους σωτῆρα καὶ φρουρὸν εὕρατο. ὧδε θεοῦ κατεφαίνοντο πράξεις δι' ἐνθέου ἀρετῆς τοῦ σωτηρίου σημείου, 10.1 οὗ δὴ πέρι μακρὸς ἂν εἴη λόγος μύσταις θεολόγων ἀνδρῶν παραδεδομένος· καὶ γὰρ ἦν τουτὶ σωτήριον ἀληθῶς, θαῦμα μὲν εἰπεῖν πολὺ δὲ θαυμάσιον ἐννοῆσαι, ὡς πάντα μὲν τὰ ἐξ αἰῶνος περὶ θεῶν ἐψευσμένα μόνον ἐπὶ γῆς ἐκάλυψεν ὀφθὲν καὶ σκότῳ μὲν καὶ λήθῃ παραδέδωκεν τὴν πλάνην, φῶς δὲ νοερὸν ψυχαῖς ἀνθρώπων ἐκλάμψαν τὸν μόνον ἀληθῆ τοῖς πᾶσιν ἀνεκάλυψε θεόν. 10.2 διὸ δὴ πᾶς ἐπὶ τὸ κρεῖττον μεταβαλὼν νεκρῶν μὲν εἰδώλων καταπτύει προσώποις, πατεῖ δ' ἄθεσμα δαιμόνων θέσμια, καὶ παλαιᾶς ἀπάτης πατροπαραδότου καταγελᾶ. λόγων δ' ἱερῶν ἁπανταχοῦ διατριβὰς ἄνθρωποι συστησάμενοι ᾧ σωτηρίοις μαθήμασιν ἐκπαιδεύονται, ὡς δὴ μηκέτι τὴν ὁρωμένην σαρκὸς ὀφθαλμοῖς ἐπτοῆσθαι κτίσιν μηδ' ἄνω βλέποντας ἥλιον καὶ σελήνην καὶ ἀστέρας μέχρι τούτων ἱστάναι τὸ θαῦμα, τὸν δὲ τούτων ἐπέκεινα, τὸν ἀφανῆ καὶ ἀόρατον κτίστην τῶν ὅλων ὁμολογεῖν, μόνον αὐτὸν σέβειν δεδιδαγμένους. 10.3 τοσούτων δῆτα παραίτιον ἀγαθῶν ἀνθρώποις τὸ μέγα τουτὶ καὶ παράδοξον ἀναπέφανται σημεῖον, δι' οὗ τὰ μὲν οὐκέτ' ἔστιν ὅσα φαῦλα, τὰ δὲ πρὶν οὐκ ὄντα νῦν παρὰ τοῖς πᾶσιν ἀκτῖσιν εὐσεβείας ἐκλάμπει. 10.4 λόγοι δ' οὖν καὶ μαθήματα καὶ προτροπαὶ σώφρονος καὶ θεοσεβοῦς βίου εἰς ἐξάκουστον πᾶσιν ἔθνεσι κηρύττονται, κηρύττει τε βασιλεὺς αὐτός· τὸ δὲ μέγιστον θαῦμα ὅτι δὴ τοσοῦτος βασιλεὺς μεγίστῃ φωνῇ τῷ παντὶ κόσμῳ οἷά τις ὑποφήτης τοῦ παμβασιλέως θεοῦ κέκραγεν, πάντας ὁμοῦ τοὺς ὑπ' αὐτῷ ποιμαινομένους ἐπὶ τὴν τοῦ ὄντος γνῶσιν ἀνακαλούμενος. 10.5 καὶ δὴ μέσοις βασιλείων οἴκοις οὐκ ἔθ' ὡς τὸ πρὶν ἀνδρῶν ἀθέων φλήναφοι, ἱερεῖς δὲ καὶ θιασῶται θεοῦ βασιλικῆς ὕμνοις εὐσεβείας σεμνυνόμενοι πανηγυρίζουσιν, θεός τε εἷς αὐτὸς ὁ τῶν ὅλων βασιλεὺς εἰς ἅπαντας καταγγέλλεται, ἀγαθῶν τε λόγος εὐαγγελικὸς τῷ τοῦ παντὸς βασιλεῖ τὸ τῶν ἀνθρώπων συνάπτει γένος, ἵλεων καὶ φίλον τὸν ἐπουράνιον πατέρα τοῖς κατὰ γῆν υἱοῖς εὐαγγελιζόμενος, χοροί τε παντοῖοι ᾠδαῖς ἐπινικίοις γεραίρουσι, καὶ πᾶν τὸ θνητὸν συνηχεῖ γένος τοῖς κατ' οὐρανὸν ἀγγελικοῖς θιάσοις, ψυχαί τε λογικαὶ δι' ὧν περιβέβληνται σωμάτων ὥσπερ διὰ μουσικῶν ὀργάνων τοὺς πρέποντας ὕμνους αὐτῷ καὶ τὰς ὀφειλομένας ἀναπέμπουσι θεολογίας· ὁμοῦ τε τοῖς κατ' ἀνατολὰς οἰκοῦσιν οἱ τὰ πρὸς δυσμὰς λαχόντες ὑπὸ μίαν καιροῦ ῥοπὴν τοῖς αὐτοῦ μαθήμασιν ἐκπαιδεύονται, τοῖς τε κατὰ μεσημβρίαν οἱ τὴν ἀρκτῴαν διειληφότες λῆξιν σύμφωνα κελαδοῦσι μέλη, τοῖς αὐτοῖς τρόποις τε καὶ λόγοις τὸν θεοσεβῆ μεταδιώκοντες βίον, καὶ ἕνα μὲν τὸν ἐπὶ πάντων θεὸν ἀνευφημοῦντες, ἕνα δὲ τὸν μονογενῆ σωτῆρα πάντων αἴτιον ἀγαθῶν ἐπιγραφόμενοι, ἕνα δὲ καὶ τὸν ἐπὶ γῆς διορθωτὴν βασιλέα παῖδάς τε τούτου θεοφιλεῖς γνωρίζοντες. 10.7 ὁ δ' οἷα σοφὸς κυβερνήτης ὑψίζυγος ὑπὲρ πηδαλίων ὀχούμενος εὐθείᾳ περαίνων οἰακίζει, οὐρίῳ πνεύματι τοὺς ὑπ' αὐτῷ πάντας ἐπὶ τὸν ἀσφαλῆ καὶ γαληνὸν ναυστολῶν ὅρμον, θεὸς δὲ αὐτὸς ὁ μέγας βασιλεὺς ἄνωθεν αὐτῷ δεξιὰν χεῖρα προτείνων τέως μὲν ἁπάντων ἐχθρῶν καὶ πολεμίων νικητὴν αὐτὸν καθίστησιν, μακραῖς ἐτῶν περιόδοις τὸ τῆς βασιλείας ἐπαύξων κράτος, μέλλει δὲ καὶ κρειττόνων ἀποφαίνειν κοινωνὸν
