has devoured it, a basilisk is born, having a most dreadful venom, so as to kill even by its glance alone. The beetle, having formed a round shape from cow dung, rolls it forward. They say that it is above the earth for six months, and that it plants its seed in the dung sphere, and gives birth to a male beetle; for a female beetle never exists. And the Egyptians, because of this nature of its, worship it, transforming it into the sun, since it rolls a sphere, and they depict the stars in the forms of serpents, because they make their course oblique. The ants, gathering grain, cut through the middle of the kernels, so that it will not sprout when moistened; and they remain indoors for the winter, having procured sufficient food during the summer. The leech, being a worm-like creature, lives in fresh waters; and a person drinking greedily swallows it, since due to its great smoothness it slips down with the water being drunk. And he suffers no small harm from it, as it sucks the blood from the flesh, and grows from this; and it happens to be insatiable in its thirst for blood. And often it is not drawn out by physicians needing to remove it, until it bursts. To asps and other biting reptiles, the cat is an enemy. Of snakes, and locusts, and caterpillars, the ibis. To horned vipers, and scorpions, and other small reptiles, the hawk is established as death-bearing. And this creature is 749 sympathetic toward man; for if it sees him dead and unburied, it laments, and throws earth upon him. And after the creation of the world, God later fashioned man, by crushing the cold with the hot, and by binding the moist with the dry, and again by loosing the dry with the moist, he constituted him, having all the parts of the universe. For just as the earth, standing still, possesses the cold air poured around it, and in an ordered way fire is suspended over it, and again water runs around it in a circle; so indeed man, being constituted like earth by the solid nature of his bones and by the flesh poured over them, has been allotted spiritual breath through his nostrils, like air, which both warms and cools his innate heat. And Cain was the first to devise measures, and weights, and boundaries of land, and the building of a city, while all at that time embraced the simple and quiet life. Φασὶ δὲ αὐτὸν ἑξάμηνον ἐπάνω τῆς γῆς, καὶ σπερμαίνειν εἰς τὴν ὄνθιον σφαῖραν, καὶ τίκτειν ἄῤῥενα κάνθαρον· οὐ γὰρ θῆλυς ὑπάρχει κάνθαρος πώποτε. Καὶ οἱ Αἰγύπτιοι διὰ τὴν τοιαύτην φύσιν αὐτοῦ σέβονται αὐτὸν εἰς ἥλιον μετασχηματίζοντες, ἐπειδὴ κυλίει σφαῖραν, καὶ τὰ ἄστρα ὄφεων σχήμασιν ἀπεικάζουσι, διὰ τὸ λοξὴν ποιεῖσθαι τὴν πορείαν αὐτούς. Οἱ δὲ μύρμηκες τὸν σῖτον συνάγοντες διὰ μέσου τῶν κόκκων τέμνουσι, πρὸς τὸ μὴ ἐκφύσαι αὐτὸν νοτιζόμενον· καὶ μένουσι τὸν χειμῶνα ἀπρόϊτοι, διὰ τοῦ θέρους αὐτάρκη τὴν τροφὴν πορισάμενοι. Ἡ δὲ βδέλλα, σκωληκοειδὲς ζῶον ὑπάρχουσα, ἐν τοῖς γλυκέσιν ἐκδιαιτᾶται ὕδασι· καὶ πίνων τις λάβρως συγκαταπίνει αὐτὸ, διὰ τὴν πολλὴν λειότητα συνολισθαίνει τῷ πινομένῳ ὕδατι. Καὶ οὐ μικρὰν ἐξ αὐτοῦ βλάβην ὑφίσταται, τῆς σαρκὸς τοῦ αἵματος ἐκμυζοῦντος αὐτοῦ, καὶ τούτου αὔξοντος· ἀχόρταστον δὲ τυγχάνει πρὸς δίψαν αἵματος. Καὶ πολλάκις αὐτὸ τῆς ἀφαιρέσεως δεομένοις ἰατροῖς οὐκ ἀνιμᾶται, ἕως ὅτου διαῤῥαγείη. Ταῖς δὲ ἀσπίσι καὶ τοῖς ἄλλοις τοῖς δηκτικοῖς ἑρπετοῖς αἴλουρός ἐστι πολέμιος. Τῶν δὲ ὄφεων, καὶ τῶν ἀκρίδων, καὶ τῶν καμπῶν ὁ ἴβις. Τοῖς δὲ κεράσταις, καὶ σκορπίοις, καὶ τοῖς ἄλλοις μικροῖς ἑρπετοῖς ὁ ἱέραξ θανατηφόρος καθέστηκεν. Ἔστι δὲ τοῦτο 749 συμπαθὲς πρὸς τὸν ἄνθρωπον· ἐὰν γὰρ θεάσηται αὐτὸν νεκρὸν καὶ ἄταφον, κατοδύρεται, καὶ γῆν ἐπιῤῥίπτει αὐτῷ. Μετὰ δὲ τὴν τοῦ κόσμου ποίησιν, ὕστερον τὸν ἄνθρωπον ὁ Θεὸς ἐδημιούργησε, τῷ μὲν θερμῷ θραύσας τὸ ψυχρὸν, τῷ δὲ ξηρῷ δήσας τὸ ὑγρὸν, καὶ λύσας πάλιν τὸ ξηρὸν τῷ ὑγρῷ, συνεστήσατο αὐτὸν, ἔχοντα πάντα τὰ μέρη τοῦ παντός. Ὥσπερ γὰρ ἡ γῆ ἑστῶσα τὸν ψυχρὸν ἀέρα περικεχυμένον ἐν ἑαυτῇ κέκτηται, τεταγμένως δὲ ἐπ' αὐτῷ τὸ πῦρ αἰωρούμενον, καὶ πάλιν τὸ ὕδωρ περιθέον κύκλοθεν αὐτήν· οὕτω δὴ καὶ ὁ ἄνθρωπος καθάπερ γῆ τῶν ὀστέων στερεμνίᾳ φύσει, καὶ τῇ ἐπ' αὐτὸν κεχυμένῃ σαρκὶ συνεστὼς τὴν πνευματικὴν διὰ τῶν μυκτήρων ἀναπνοὴν, ὥσπερ ἀέρα κεκλήρωται τὴν ἔμφυτον αὐτοῦ θερμότητα καὶ καταψύχουσαν. Καὶ γὰρ ὁ ὑπὲρ κεφαλῆς ἡμῶν ἀὴρ, τὴν πυρώδη τοῦ ἀέρος φύσιν καταψύχων, εὔκρατον παντὶ τῷ βίῳ τῶν ζώων καθίστησι. Τὸ δὲ θερμὸν τὸ ἐνυπάρχον τῷ σώματι τοῦ ἀνθρώπου τὴν τοῦ φλέγματος ἐκτήκει ἀμετρίαν, καθάπερ κρυσταλλῶδες πίλημα ὕδατος. Αἱ δὲ φλέβες καὶ τὸ αἷμα τὸ ἐν αὐταῖς ποταμῶν μιμήματα ἀποσώζουσιν. Τοιοῦτον ὁ Θεὸς τεκτηνάμενος τὸν ἄνθρωπον ἐκ τῆς γῆς, καὶ δοὺς αὐτῷ λογικὴν ψυχὴν, τοῦ παραδείσου τῆς τρυφῆς ἀπολαύειν αὐτὸν παρ.................. Εἶτα τῆς ἐντολῆς παρακούσαντα εἰς τὴν γῆν αὐτὸν ταύτην μετέστησεν, ἐπίμοχθον αὐτῷ τὸν βίον ἔχειν ἐπ' αὐτῆς ἀποφηνάμενος. Γνωρίσας οὖν τὴν γυναῖκα αὐτοῦ Εὔαν, υἱοὺς δύο ἐγέννησε, τὸν Κάϊν, καὶ τὸν Ἄβελ. Καὶ ὁ μὲν Κάϊν ἦν γεωργὸς, ὁ δὲ Ἄβελ ποιμὴν, καὶ τοῦ γεωργοῦ οὐ μετῄει τὰς ἀπαρχὰς τῶν καρπῶν. Προσήνεγκεν ὁ Ἄβελ τῷ Θεῷ· καὶ ἡ θυσία αὐτοῦ ἐδέχθη. Ὁ δὲ Κάϊν, πρῶτος αὐτὸς τῶν γεννωμένων ἐμφορηθεὶς, οὕτως ἀνήνεγκε· καὶ ἄδεκτος αὐτοῦ ἡ θυσία ἐγένετο. Καὶ ὀργισθεὶς ἐπὶ τούτῳ ὁ Κάϊν, ἀνεῖλε φθόνῳ τὸν ἀδελφὸν αὐτοῦ· καὶ ὁ Θεὸς ἐπάρατον αὐτὸν ποιησάμενος, καὶ τῆς γῆς ἐκείνης ἐξέβαλεν. Ὁ δὲ, πολλὴν περινοστήσας ὁδὸν, εἰς τόπον τινὰ Καϊνᾶν ὀνομαζόμενον ἦλθε, καὶ πᾶσαν ἀῤῥητοποιίαν μετήρχετο, τοὺς παριόντας ἐνεδρεύων, καὶ ἀναιρῶν, καὶ ἐκ τῶν σκύλων χρημάτων συνάγων πλῆθος ἀμύθητον. Πρῶτος δὲ Κάϊν μέτρα, καὶ σταθμοὺς, καὶ ὅρους γῆς ἐπενόησε, καὶ οἰκοδομὴν πόλεως, πάντων τῶν κατ' ἐκεῖνο καιροῦ τὸν ἀκέραιον καὶ ἀπράγμονα βίον ἀσπαζομένων. Ὁ δὲ Ἀδὰμ, μένων ἐν ᾧ τόπῳ ἐτύγχανε, πολλοὺς παῖδας καὶ θυγατέρας ἐποίησεν, ἐν οἷς ἐξαίρετός τις ὑπῆρχεν ὁ Σὴθ, ὅστις ἐν ἡλικίᾳ γενόμενος
