he says, to look upon your sacrifice, or to receive an acceptable thing from your hands? as one especially displeased, and rejecting their sacred ministry on account of their wickedness.
62. For whenever I remember Zacharias, I shudder at the sickle, and likewise what this man testifies against the priests; what he signifies concerning Jesus the great, the high priest, whom in his account he strips of his filthy and unworthy garment, and clothes him in the priestly and brilliant one; and all that the angel has said to him concerning Jesus and enjoined upon him; 35.473 these things, indeed, referring perhaps to greater and higher things than concern most priests, let them be honored in silence; except that at his right hand stood the devil to oppose him; a matter, to me at least, not moderate, nor worthy of little fear and vigilance.
63. But as for what he diligently alleges and rebukes in the rest of the shepherds, who is so daring and of so adamant a soul, as not to tremble at hearing it, and become more moderate in his own eyes? A voice, he says, of shepherds wailing, for their magnificence is wretched; a voice of roaring lions, for they have suffered these things. He almost hears the wailings as if they were already present, and wails with those who suffer. And a little before this, more strikingly and vehemently: Feed, he says, the flock of slaughter, whose possessors slaughtered them, and did not repent; and those who sold them said, Blessed be the Lord, for we have become rich; and their shepherds had no compassion upon them. Therefore I will no longer spare the inhabitants of the earth, says the Lord Almighty; and again: Sword, awake against the shepherds, and strike the shepherds, and scatter the sheep; and, I will bring my hand upon the shepherds, and my wrath was kindled against the shepherds, and I will visit the lambs; adding now to the threat also the leaders of the people. Thus he studiously adheres to the word and cannot easily be freed from the threats; so that I fear I too may be thus accursed.
64. But that we may pass over the elders in Daniel; and indeed we might pass over what was well said and foretold by the master concerning them, that iniquity came out of Babylon from elder judges, who seemed to govern the people; how shall we bear Ezekiel, the beholder and expounder of great mysteries 35.476 and visions? How indeed what he commands the watchmen, not to keep silent about wickedness, and the sword coming upon it? as this is profitable neither to them, nor to the sinners; but to foresee and proclaim it will benefit both, if the one party would speak, and the other would hear, or at any rate those who gave the warning.
65. How then the other condemnation, which he makes against those who shepherd, now in these words: Woe upon woe shall be, and rumor upon rumor, and a vision shall be sought from a prophet, and the law shall perish from the priest, and counsel from the elders; now again in those: Son of man, say to her: You are a land not rained upon, nor has rain come upon you in the day of wrath; whose leaders in the midst of her, like roaring lions, seizing plunder, devouring souls in their power; and after a little: Her priests have violated my law, and have profaned my holy things; between the profane and the holy, he says, they did not distinguish, but all things were one to them, and from my sabbaths they hid their eyes, and I was profaned in the midst of them; and threatening both to finish the wall, and those who plaster it; that is, those who sin and those who cover it up; which belongs to evil rulers and priests, and those who lead astray the house of Israel according to their hearts which are alienated in their desires.
