Moses commanded a man to take a wife from his own tribe, so that inheritances might not be transferred from tribe to tribe. Synopsis of Deuteronomy. Moses recounts all the former things as in a summary, bringing them to remembrance both of God's beneficence and of their own wickedness. Exhortation not to commit idolatry. Here is also found: You shall not worship the stars, which the Lord your God has assigned to all the nations under heaven. But "He assigned" does not mean that He Himself commanded it—far from it—but as the blessed Paul says: God gave them over to a debased mind, not that He gave them over, but that when they had chosen it and were unrepentant, He permitted it. So here, "He assigned to them" means that when they chose error and did not wish to turn back, He permitted it. Here, going on a little, he says: I call heaven and earth to witness against you, that you will utterly perish, if you turn away from God. Then he shows that God has not provided these things for anyone else as He did for them. And he sets apart three cities of the Jordan for a place of refuge. He still reminds them of the former things, and, "You shall bind them on your hands," he says, "and you shall write them on your doorposts, and you shall teach your son." And having said what evils will happen if they disobey, he encourages them not to fear their enemies. Again he reminds them of the former things. Here is found, "Take heed to yourself," which he often says to them as he goes on, and he exhorts them not to attribute their victories to their own power, but to the grace of God. Here is found that God is a consuming fire, which Paul put in his letter to the Hebrews. And in the same place Moses exhorts them not to be proud. For it is not for your righteousness, he says, O Israel, that the nations will be destroyed, but because of their impiety. He also reminds them of the making of the calf. And here is found: Circumcise the hardness of your heart, and you shall not stiffen your neck. He praises the land of promise. Here is found: When you have eaten and drunk and are full, take heed to yourself; and he foretells the evils if they disobey, and the good things if they would obey. And he commands to give the blessing on Mount Gerizim, and the curse on Mount Ebal; to destroy the idols and their places. He commands not to offer sacrifices to God everywhere, but in the place which He shall choose. Concerning not emulating the nations, nor being persuaded by anyone advising to commit idolatry, even if he performs signs, neither by a friend, nor by any other, but to stone the one advising it, even if he is a brother, and if a city commits idolatry, to utterly destroy it. He advises what one must eat, and what one must avoid. He legislates concerning the remission of debts, concerning the remission and 56.335 freedom of those who serve, concerning the firstborn, concerning the Passover. Here is found: You shall not be able to celebrate the Passover in any of the cities which the Lord your God gives you, but in the place which the Lord your God shall choose. Concerning the Feast of Weeks, concerning the Feast of Tabernacles, concerning judges, concerning kings, if ever they should come to desire that someone rule as king. Concerning the Levites, and what they ought to receive. Concerning the need not to use so-called purifiers, or enchanters, or divinations or omens, or such things. Here is found: God will raise up for you a prophet like me. And he commands concerning the cities of refuge. Here is found: On the evidence of two or three witnesses every matter shall be established. And concerning those who bear false witness, what they must suffer. When war is imminent, he says who must be sent away, and not permitted to fight with them. He advises not to kill enemies who surrender, except for the seven nations. And as for all the cities, when you have taken them, he says, you shall plunder them, killing only the males. But from these, whose land you are inheriting, you shall not leave alive anyone who breathes. Do not cut down fruit-bearing trees, he says, to build a rampart in a siege. If someone is found murdered, and the murderer does not appear, he legislates what must be done. But if someone having two wives, should hate one, but love the other, and it happens that the firstborn is of the hated one, not
