among them, let him be anathema and accursed from the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, of the consubstantial and adorable Trinity, and of every heavenly power, and of the choir of the holy Apostles and Prophets, and of the infinite multitude of the martyrs, and of every spirit made perfect in righteousness, now and forever and unto the infinite ages of ages. Amen.
And weeping, they prayed for him, saying: God will strengthen you, father, and will deem you worthy to complete this course without stumbling.
And when these things were said, many soldiers gathered, listening to the many good words that were stirring them, and one of the general’s domestics, seeing that a large army was piling up and was being edified and was condemning the things being done to him, what he suspected God knows, he allowed him to be snatched away and cast two miles from the camp, until they should hold the assembly and those who were supposed to lead him away 15Γ_064 to Perberis. Nevertheless, overcome by divine love, the clerics traversed the two miles, and came and embraced him and prayed for him and, carrying him with their own hands, they placed him on the beast, and returned in peace to their own places, and he was carried away to Perberis, in the guard that held him.
32. And this too must be known, that in Rhegium Troilus, addressing abba
Maximus, said, that the consiliarius John had written to him about an agreement proposed to them, and that this should happen for the time being, the disorder of your disciples prevented it. But I think that the said consiliarius John did not write to Troilus, but to Menas the monk, and he told those of the palace.
33. And after these things they brought them to Constantinople, and took action against
them, and after they had anathematized and exhumed Maximus among the saints and the blessed Anastasius, his disciple, and the most holy pope Martin, and the holy Sophronius the patriarch of Jerusalem, and all the orthodox who were of one mind with them, they brought the other blessed Anastasius, and using the same anathemas and insults against him also, they handed him over to the magistrates, saying thus:
You then, Anastasius, having put on the grey cloak of the universal curse of anathemas, depart from the canonical hearing, to which you have chosen a stance, bringing with you the sentence of gehenna, with the renowned and venerable and sacred senate that has adjudicated all things being present with us, which will immediately take up the judgment after us, and will execute upon you what seems right to the civil laws, as they shall decide, on account of your great blasphemies and tyrannies. For the vote of the present synod against them, and with the cooperation of the almighty Christ our true God having canonically decreed the necessary things against you, Maximus, Anastasius and Anastasius, since what was lacking 15Γ_066 with respect to what was impiously said and done by you, was to be subjected to the strict penalties of the laws, even if a worthy penalty for such transgressions and blasphemies of yours does not exist, leaving you to the righteous Judge concerning the greater judgment, and in this present life emptying the rigor of the laws, allowing you to gain your life, we decree for you, the all-honorable prefect present with us, immediately
