for from *eleos* (mercy) comes *eleon* (pity), and with the addition of an iota, *eileon* with a diphthong. 9Eibō9: With the ei diphthong; for from *leibō* it has become *eibō* by the dropping of the l, and from there *eibē*; there are three verbs ending in -bō written with the ei diphthong; such as, *ameibō*; *steibō*, which is to walk about, and *leibō*, and *eibō*, by the dropping of the l. 9Epeixis9: With the ei diphthong; for from *epeigō*, *epeixō*, comes *epeixis*; and *epeigō* is written with the ei diphthong, because it has *oigō* as its counterpart; for he who urges on, wishing to accomplish something, urges on; and again, things having *o* as a counterpart are written with the ei diphthong; such as, *epeigō*; *oigō*; as *leipō*, *leloipa*; and *kteinō*, *ktonos*. 9Encheimargos9: With the ei diphthong; for it comes from the dative *enchei*. 9Enoeis9: With the ei diphthong; for it is a verb in the imperfect tense; and it must be known that imperfects in the second and third person are written with the ei diphthong; *enoeis*, *enoei*; *epoieis*, *epoiei*; *ekaleis*, *ekalei*. 9Heimenos9: It means "clothed," it is written with the ei diphthong; for the Aeolians say *heimenoi* and *aphiemenoi*; just as *keirō*, *kerrō*; *phtheirō*, *phtherō*. 9Eiamenē9: It means a very wet place, with the ei diphthong; for from *ereiamenē*, and by apocope, *eiamenē*. 9Ergaleion9: Ei diphthong; and it is properispomenon by tradition. 9Eirōneia9: With the ei diphthong, both at the beginning 204 and in the penultimate syllable; the initial one, because it comes from *eirōn*, *eirōnos*, which is written with the ei diphthong, as has been shown; and in the penultimate, because from *eirōneuō* comes *eirōneia*; as *moicheuō*, *moicheia*. 9Eilikrinēs9: It means the pure, with the ei diphthong at the beginning; for from *krinō* and *helē*, meaning heat, comes *eilikrinēs*, as if "one judged in the heat of the sun"; and by addition of the iota it became *eilikrinēs* with the ei diphthong; The *li* came to be thus: it was *eilokrinēs*, and by the change of the *o* to *i* it became *eilikrinēs*; and the *kri* is from *krinō*. 9Epēreia9: Diphthong. For *Epēreazō*, and *epireasmos*. 9Eikosi9: With the ei diphthong by tradition; and just as from *heis* came *eeis* by addition of an *e*, and it preserves the ei diphthong, so also *eikosi* becomes *eeikosi* by addition and preserves the ei diphthong; and it can be said thus: every number within the thousands wishes to have a letter, whether vowel or consonant, from those within the decade; for *hen* (one) has the *e*, which is from within the decade; and again *duo* (two) has the *d* from within the decade; again *pentēkonta* (fifty) has the *e*, and the *ē*, and the *a*, which are from within the decade; but *oktō* (eight) seems to oppose this; for it does not have a letter from within the decade; but it has letters from within the decade in potentiality; for the philosophers say that it is from *agō* [meaning 'to lead'] two; and *agō duo* has letters from within the decade, I mean the *a*, the *g*, and the *d*; for *oktō* is said from "to lead two"; for it leads two tetrads; and because of such a rule *treis* (three) is also written with the ei diphthong so that it may have a letter from within the decade; for it has the *e*; but if it were written with only the *i*, it would not have a letter from within the decade, but in composition; such as in *triskaideka* (thirteen); since it is found to have a letter from within the decade, for it has the *a* of the conjunction *kai*, and the *d*, and the *i* of *deka*; for this reason, *treis* drops the added *e* on account of the letter found from within the decade; therefore, so that in *eikosi* 205 a letter from within the decade might also be found, for this reason it is written with the ei diphthong; for it has the *e*, which is from within the decade; but if it were written with *i*, it would not have a letter from within the decade; of course the Dorians, writing it with *i*, change the *o* in the penultimate syllable to *a*, saying *eikasi*; so that it might be found having a letter from within the decade. 9Eilissō9: The *ei* is a diphthong; the *li* is an iota; as from the future *helixō* comes *eilissō*; the *li* is an iota; since the ei diphthong is never found before the two *ss*, except for *kreissōn*, and that which comes from it
