and as a father to the emperor, as I heard from some, men not able to lie, and by the judgment of God, not from others, but proclaiming himself from himself, and saying that he was being preserved by 51 Providence for the very purpose of avenging the divine upon the unholy by pursuing them. And the pitiful and strange thing was this, that in the case of some, he allowed those who were withdrawing to let these things happen, but in the case of others, he was prepared to exact vengeance. For those men wished to pursue and settle according to the canons for the time being the things done yesterday and the day before regarding the pope, as they also said they demanded, but for him, it was the things that had happened long ago because of the transgressions against John, the son of emperor Lascaris, and the overlooking of Patriarch Arsenios because of his own zealous disregard, and thirdly, his own withdrawal, on which matters it was necessary that they too, being hierarchs, should follow, and join with the patriarch and him in their zeal, but not to reject him and seek another, and while overlooking him in his zeal, to introduce Chalazas into his church; on which account, being vexed, he was angry at those of his own party and the old ones, as many as still survived, but nevertheless 52 releasing his opinion, he proceeded against all of them in common. Therefore an order of the emperor was published, appointing him as father, as has been said, and confirming what seemed good to him; and Michael Strategopoulos and his followers were sent as representatives of the emperor, he who had recently been honored with the dignity of protostrator; and the place of their assembly, with the patriarch also present, was the church of the Theotokos of Blachernae. And besides other things, this also was commanded, that anyone who opposed the decisions in any way should be judged for high treason. Therefore, the patriarch presided, and at the same time the bishop of Sardis and a great many of the schismatics with him; while the emperor’s representatives for the proceedings sat on the other side. The hierarchs, however, having been summoned, were brought in to be judged. And nothing more was heard there except, "Let so-and-so be brought in," and the accusation to his face that he had transgressed the law. And there were also some of the monks, who indeed stood by as having been persecuted. And immediately the one judging said, "Let him be taken away," while others added, "the impious one," and those from the palace, seizing his hands and feet, dragged the condemned man out with dishonor, while of the monks some loudly gave him over to anathema, and others, 53 touching him even more rashly, tore his mantles and inflicted terrible things, as if he wore them unworthily. As these things were being thus accomplished that week, and with no one able to escape the snares of punishment, the patriarch was displeased, as it seemed, and had disagreed with most of what was being done, but nevertheless he followed along and submitted to the decisions. But in secret he did not hesitate to call their synod a wicked council. Finally, since they were sending for and bringing even those who did not appear voluntarily, unwilling, under the emperor's servants, they sought Theodore of Cyzicus also. But he, having slipped into the monastery of the Forerunner as he was, was trying to escape the difficulty of the time; for the matter of deposition was not so burdensome to them as the dishonor which they suffered at the hands of anyone at all. And so they sent men to bring him away. But he resisted and pulled back, and clung to the stones of the monastery like a limpet. But they added others to the first, and then others again, and were compelling him to leave the monastery and appear before their council. But since he would not be persuaded at all and they were about to use force, he anticipated them and entered the sanctuary of the church, and using the mystical table 54 as a holy asylum, from there he sent back word that he would not come out nor indeed arrive, whatever they might do. So when the prey had been scared away from the servants, they returned empty-handed to those who had sent them, and the day having been spent on these things, the one sitting as judge became vexed and said that the business concerning the bishop of Cyzicus had delayed very many proceedings concerning the others, and having added nothing more, he rose, having set a rule also for the
