sent to Herod, who was then ruling the Jews, asking that the books of the prophecies be sent to him. And King Herod sent them, written in their aforementioned Hebrew language. But since what was written in them was not known to the Egyptians, he again asked him by sending to dispatch men to translate them into the Greek language. And when this was done, the books remained also among the Egyptians until now, and are everywhere among all the Jews, who, even when they read them, do not understand what is said, but consider us enemies and foes, just like you, killing and punishing us whenever they can, as you can also be convinced. For in the recent Jewish war, Bar-Chochebas, the leader of the Jewish apostasy, ordered only Christians to be led away to terrible punishments, unless they would deny Jesus the Christ and blaspheme. Indeed, in the books of the prophets we find Jesus our Christ proclaimed beforehand as coming, being born through a virgin, and growing to manhood, and healing every disease and every sickness and raising the dead, and being envied and unrecognized and crucified, and dying and being raised and ascending into the heavens, and being and being called the Son of God, and that some would be sent by him to every race of men to proclaim these things, and that the people from the nations would rather believe in him. And he was prophesied, before he appeared, sometimes five thousand years, sometimes three thousand, sometimes two thousand, and again one thousand and at other times eight hundred; for according to the successions of the generations, different prophets arose at different times. Moses, then, who was the first of the prophets, spoke verbatim thus: A ruler shall not fail from Judah, nor a leader from his loins, until he comes for whom it is reserved; and he shall be the expectation of the nations, binding his colt to the vine, washing his robe in the blood of the grape. It is therefore your part to investigate accurately and learn until when there was a ruler and king of their own among the Jews; until the appearance of Jesus Christ, our teacher and the interpreter of the unrecognized prophecies, as it was foretold by the divine holy prophetic spirit through Moses that a ruler would not fail from the Jews until he should come for whom the kingdom is reserved. For Judah is the forefather of the Jews, from whom they also have taken the name of Jews; and you after the
