let that of the beloved be preferred to him. Concerning a disobedient son. Here it is stated, Cursed is everyone who hangs on a tree. Since therefore there was a curse for those who do not keep the law, Cursed is everyone who does not abide by all things written in this book; Moses speaking concerning the law; and it was not possible for Christ to receive that curse; for he fulfilled the law, he exchanged a curse for a curse by being hung on a tree. Concerning not overlooking even the beasts of one's enemies, and he legislates other things, and he discusses marriage laws, and he sets penalties against those who violate virgins. Whom he forbids to enter the assembly, and he legislates concerning other matters, and concerning not taking interest. Concerning not delaying in the fulfillment of vows, but whatever one has vowed, to fulfill it immediately. Concerning the wife receiving a bill of divorcement, concerning pledges, concerning theft, concerning the wages of a hired servant, concerning the orphan, concerning the widow, concerning leaving gleanings and grape-gatherings for the poor. Here it is stated concerning not giving more than forty lashes to one who is accused of some injustice. And concerning not muzzling an ox while it is threshing, and concerning the surviving brother raising up seed for his dead brother, and what he will suffer if he does not wish to raise it up. Concerning weights, concerning measures. Concerning destroying Amalek. Concerning firstfruits, concerning kindness to 56.336 widows and orphans. From here, then, are the curses and blessings, the former for those who disobey, the latter for those who obey. And he extends a long discourse concerning the evils that are about to befall them. This happened in the time of the Assyrians and Babylonians. And the eating of sons, it came to pass during sieges. And he makes mention here concerning Christ. Your life, he says, shall be hanging before your eyes. Here it is stated, Lest there be any root of bitterness, which Paul also mentioned in the Epistle to the Hebrews. Here it is stated, The secret things belong to the Lord our God, but the things that are revealed belong to you and to your children. That his commandment, he says, will not be too difficult. It is not in heaven, that you should say, 'Who will ascend into heaven?' nor is it beyond the sea, but the word is near you, in your mouth. These things, spoken concerning the legal commandment, Paul applied to faith in Christ. I call heaven and earth to witness against you, he says, that you should love God. Then he calls Joshua the son of Nun, and commands him to lead the people, and not to fear the enemies, having God as their helper. And he advises that at the feast of tabernacles the law should be read to all the people. God foretells to Moses that after his death the people will practice idolatry, and will be punished. Let this song therefore, he says, be a witness against them. For they will never forget it. And Moses wrote the song, and foretold to them that they would transgress the law. Here it is stated: They have made me jealous with what is no god, and I will make them jealous with those who are not a nation. Moses is commanded to go up to Mount Abarim, which was also called Nebo, and to see the land of promise; and having blessed each tribe, he died; and no one has seen his burial place to this day. Here were completed the five books of Moses, which alone the Samaritans accepted. Synopsis of Joshua the son of Nun. Joshua is commanded to give orders to the people, and to pay attention to the law of God. He sends spies; they entered into Jericho. The king of the city, having heard, sent, seeking the men from Rahab the harlot who had received them. But she hid the spies. And in return for this favor she asked for the salvation of her house, when the city should be taken; and they consented. And having departed they reported what had happened. He commands the people to cross the Jordan, and they crossed on dry land, and they set up twelve stones in the camp. The kings of the Amorites who were beyond the Jordan, and the kings of Phoenicia, having heard that they crossed the Jordan on dry land, their hearts melted, and they were terrified. Then Joshua, having been commanded, circumcises the Jews with stone knives. Since Israel had wandered for forty years in
