the future hope of the resurrection 279 immortal; and it is possible to take up the sufferings of Christ readily and easily. Let those who have not yet been deemed worthy to take them up through the energy of the Spirit, through their own zeal and desire, in hope and faith, continually meditate on the commandments and the sufferings of the Lord; and by their work, as they are able, compelling themselves, let them train themselves, hoping to be perfectly guided in them through the Spirit, so that, according to the working of hope, desire, and meditation of the mind, we may receive the Spirit working in power with pleasure, and the working of the evangelical commandments and the endurance of the sufferings of Christ with joy, and thus, having been deemed worthy to become perfect Christians through the active indwelling and communion of the Spirit, we may become heirs of eternal life. So, therefore, strive and so be courageous and so prepare yourselves for every good work, all together, but especially those who compel themselves to persevere in prayers, as having so great a good as their goal, so that you may become an edification and benefit both to yourselves and to your neighbors, and not cause harm to yourselves and to others through carelessness and inattention. But those who are not yet able to give themselves completely to the work of prayer on account of their immaturity, prepare yourselves 280 for service or ministration or work or the other rest of the brothers, with faith and reverence and fear of God, as fulfilling a commandment of God and as accomplishing a spiritual work; and not as expecting a reward from men, nor awaiting honor or thanks from them, but as to a work of God, pay sober attention, and as slaves of Christ, serve with joy, giving no place at all for wickedness through people-pleasing or murmuring or pride or laxity or carelessness or contempt to stain your good work and to defile and pollute it with its own poison of deceit, but so that through reverence and fear and love for God your good practice may be sanctified and become well-pleasing to God. For with such philanthropy and infinite goodness the Lord condescended to the human race, so as to allow no one to remain idle from virtue or good work, but to each He gave a task according to the power of his choice, drawing all with long-suffering day by day to the greater virtues of the commandments. Whoever gives, He says, a cup of cold water only in the name of a disciple, amen I say to you, he will by no means lose his reward. See how great an ease of commandment the Lord has given, so that no one, as if weak and feeble in will, might be deprived of the good. And again: As you did it to one of these, you did it to me. Only that what is done may be according to God, and not according to the glory of men; 281 for He added: Only in the name of a disciple, that is, that the good work may be done in the fear and love of Christ. For to those who ostentatiously do something good for the sake of the glory and praise of men, the Lord, finding fault, gave a decision: All things, He says, they do to be seen by men, and having gone through this, He adds with an oath, saying: Amen, amen, I say to you; they have received their reward. Therefore He commands His disciples: Take heed that you do not do your almsgiving or your fasting or your prayer before men; otherwise, you have no reward with your Father who is in heaven. He advised to push away the glory or honor or praises coming from men and not to accept them in the mind at all, but to expect the true glory and praise from God alone, as has been said before; for the Lord did not teach that it is possible for some good done by us not to be known at all by men. For how was this possible, when He Himself advised that our good works should shine as a light before men, for the glory of God
