For with such philanthropy and infinite goodness the Lord condescended to the human race, so as to allow no one to remain idle from virtue or good work, but to each He gave a task according to the power of his choice, drawing all with long-suffering day by day to the greater virtues of the commandments. Ὃς ἐὰν ποτίσῃ, φησί, ποτήριον ψυχροῦ ὕδατος μόνον εἰς ὄνομα μαθητοῦ, ἀμὴν λέγω ὑμῖν, οὐ μὴ ἀπολέσῃ τὸν μισθὸν αὐτοῦ. ἴδε ἕως πόσου εὐκολότητα ἐντολῆς ὁ κύριος ἔδωκεν, ἵνα μή τις ἄμοιρος ὡσὰν ἀσθενὴς καὶ ἄτονος τὴν προαίρεσιν ἀπὸ τοῦ ἀγαθοῦ γένηται. καὶ πάλιν· Ἐφ' ὅσον ἑνὶ τούτων ἐποιήσατε, ἐμοὶ ἐποιήσατε. μόνον ἵνα ᾖ τὸ γινόμενον κατὰ θεόν, καὶ μὴ κατὰ δόξαν ἀνθρώπων γίνηται· 281 προσέθηκε γάρ· Μόνον εἰς ὄνομα μαθητοῦ, τουτέστι φόβῳ καὶ ἀγάπῃ τοῦ Χριστοῦ τὸ ἀγαθὸν ἔργον ἵνα γένηται. τοῖς γὰρ κατὰ δόξαν καὶ ἔπαινον ἀνθρώπων ἐπιδεικτικῶς ἀγαθόν τι πράττουσι μεμφόμενος ὁ κύριος ἀπόφασιν ἔδωκε· Πάντα, φησί, ποιοῦσι πρὸς τὸ θεαθῆναι τοῖς ἀνθρώποις, καὶ διεξελθὼν ἐπάγει μεθ' ὅρκου λέγων· Ἀμὴν ἀμὴν λέγω ὑμῖν· ἀπέχουσι τὸν μισθὸν αὐτῶν. διὸ παραγγέλλει τοῖς μαθηταῖς· Βλέπετε μὴ ποιήσητε τὴν ἐλεημοσύνην ὑμῶν ἢ τὴν νηστείαν ἢ τὴν εὐχὴν ὑμῶν ἔμπροσθεν τῶν ἀνθρώπων· εἰ δὲ μή γε, μισθὸν οὐκ ἔχετε παρὰ τῷ πατρὶ ὑμῶν τῷ ἐν τοῖς οὐρανοῖς. τὴν παρὰ ἀνθρώπων δόξαν ἢ τιμὴν ἢ ἐπαίνους προσερχομένους ἀπωθεῖσθαι καὶ μὴ προσίεσθαι τῷ νῷ καθόλου παρῄνεσεν, ἀλλὰ παρὰ θεοῦ μόνου τὴν ἀληθινὴν δόξαν καὶ τὸν ἔπαινον ἐκδέχεσθαι, ὡς προείρηται· οὐχ οἷόν τε γὰρ μὴ γνωσθῆναι ἀγαθόν τι τοῖς ἀνθρώποις ὅλως παρ' ἡμῶν ὁ κύριος ἐδίδαξε. πῶς γὰρ ἦν τοῦτο δυνατόν, ὁπότε αὐτὸς ὡς φῶς λάμψαι ἡμῶν τὰ ἀγαθὰ ἔργα ἔμπροσθεν τῶν ἀνθρώπων παρῄνεσεν εἰς δόξαν θεοῦ
