{3Jο 9, 39}3Instead of for a greater punishment; for those who condemned him as a sinner are themselves condemned as sinners. 325 {3Jο 10, 1}3A thief is one who by force seizes for himself the honor not given to him, which he is not able to receive, unless he believes in Christ; or rather, a thief is one who does not use the teaching established from the scriptures, but comes by another, unestablished way. For this reason he also said "from another place," in order to signify the scribes who teach "the commandments of men" and transgress the law. 326 {3Jο 10, 1}3When the faithful hear from orthodox teachers the divine teachings of the scriptures, they receive it as some kind of nourishment, but as many as call Christ a deceiver have been cast out from the rank of the sheep. 327 {3Jο 10, 4}3While it is the custom of shepherds to walk behind the sheep, this one walks before the sheep, showing that he himself leads all to the truth. 328 {3Jο 10, 5}3He calls strangers those associated with Theudas, whose hearers were scattered, and the other false christs. 329 {3Jο 10, 6}3He calls the saying a proverb on account of the meanings of two things being understood <di'> through one saying. 330 {3Jο 10, 7}3As God, knowing they did not understand, he clarifies the saying to them again, so that even in this way they might be benefited. 331 {3Jο 10, 7-8}3He is a door in that he shuts in the sheep, but keeps out and exposes the thieves; either that through faith in him alone we enter to the Father and are made his own, or that through him we come to rule over peoples, or that he receives the worthy into the holy sheepfold, but to the unworthy he closes the entrance. 332 {3Jο 10, 8}3When the Lord said "all," he does not mean the holy prophets, but those who pretend to be good and have crept in to rule peoples, whom those under their authority did not even endure; that is, he means the false christs or those associated with Theudas. 333 {3Jο 10, 9}3The faithful, as through a door, through Christ, are escorted into eternal life. 334 {3Jο 10, 9}3Pasture is the divine teachings, which the faithful enjoy. The door is the word of God leading into the knowledge of God; and those who enter through him come to be outside the world. 335 {3Jο 10, 9}3By pasture he means security, which came to pass in the case of the apostles, who went in and went out as lords of the inhabited world, and no one was able to cast them out. 336 {3Jο 10, 10}3By "more abundantly" he means the kingdom of heaven, which he calls life because the name was familiar to them; alluding to the resurrection, he said "abundantly." Or by "abundantly" he means the participation in the Spirit, which only the saints enjoy, while all, both evil and good, are raised in common; for only the saints are changed into glory. Here he discourses concerning the saving passion to which he came willingly. 337 {3Jο 10, 10}3When all were being slaughtered and perishing, Christ came to save and to give life. 339 {3Jο 10, 12}3As a hireling who neglects the sheep he names each of the rulers of the people, since they were doing nothing for the benefit of the peoples, but treated them as belonging to others; for they were not their own, for which reason they were not grieved at the destruction of the peoples. 342 {3ςο 10, 14}3We do not know God in any other way, unless we are first known by him.
