Again, therefore, He subjects them to a severe calamity in order that they might send out a colony. But they did not even so yield to the will of God, supposing that the fertility of the land was theirs not through the benevolence of God, but through their own strength. And the giant Nebrod, being a certain bold man and valiant in hand, persuaded them to hold this opinion; who, having made them apostatize from God, compelled them to pay reverence to himself, and indeed he directs them to build a tower touching the height of heaven, threatening to take vengeance on God if He should again bring a flood upon the world. So when the multitude, with great eagerness, cooperated in his madness, and constructed the tower more quickly than speech, God immediately confused their dialect, and because of their unlikeness of tongue they were dispersed, and from this the place received the name Babylon, as the Hebrews call confusion 'Babylon'. Some of the nations, at least, preserve the names of their founders, but some also changed them, after the Hellenes later took power and adorned the nations with their own names, and also established for them their own laws in order to appropriate them for the glory of their own founding, so as to leave no suspicion of predecessors to those who came after. And the names of some were completely altered, and of some they were changed into others hard to recognize; but the appellations of a few are still preserved intact. And these are the sons of Ham: Chous, from whom came the Chousaeans, who are now the Ethiopians; Mestrem, from whom came the Mestraeans, who are now the Egyptians; Phout, the Phoutoi, who are now the Libyans, and to this day the river among the Mauri and its neighboring country are called Phoutoi. And the nation was called Libyans, and the country too, from one of the sons of Mestron named Libyos who reigned over them. And Chous had seven sons: Sabat, from whom came the Sabakioi, who to this day preserve the name along with the country; Euilat, from whom came the Euilaioi, who are now indeed the Touloi; Sabath, from whom came the Sabathenoi, who are now the Astabaroi; Regmara, from whom came the Allaioi, who even now have this name; Ioudadan, from whom came the Ioudadaioi, an Ethiopian nation eponymous to this day with its forefather; Sebekatha, from whom came the Sabaktenoi, who are also eponymous; this is Nebrod who, remaining in Babylon, first ruled them as a tyrant. Mestrem had eight sons, who took possession of the land from Gaza and as far as Egypt. And the country of the Philistieim then held its eponymy for a time, but later was called Palestine. Ταύτην δὲ τὴν οἴησιν ἔχειν αὐτοὺς Νεβρὼθ ἔπειθεν ὁ γίγας, τολμηρός τις ὢν, καὶ κατὰ χεῖρα γενναῖος, ὃς καὶ, τοῦ Θεοῦ ἀποστήσας αὐτοὺς, αὐτῷ τῷ σέβας περιποιεῖσθαι αὐτοὺς ἠνάγκασε, καὶ δὴ πύργον αὐτοὺς ἐπιτρέπει τεκτήνασθαι τῷ ὕψει τοῦ οὐρανοῦ ἐπιψαύοντα, ἀπειλῶν τὸν Θεὸν ἀνταμύνασθαι, εἰ πάλιν τῷ κόσμῳ ἐπενέγκῃ κατακλυσμόν. Τοῦ γοῦν πλήθους πολλῇ σπουδῇ τῇ μανίᾳ συνεργοῦντος αὐτῷ, καὶ λόγου θᾶττον τὸν πύργον κατασκευάζοντος, ὁ Θεὸς τὴν διάλεκτον αὐτῶν παραχρῆμα συνέχεε, καὶ ὑπὸ τῆς ἀνομοιογλωσσίας διεσκεδάσθησαν, κἀκ τούτου ὁ τόπος Βαβυλῶνα τὴν κλῆσιν εἴληφεν, τῶν Ἑβραίων τὴν σύγχυσιν Βαβυλὼν ὀνομαζόντων. Ἕκαστος γοῦν τὴν προστυγχάνουσαν γῆν κατελάμβανε, καὶ ἐπλήρουν πᾶσαν παράλιόν τε καὶ ἤπειρον, ἔτι δὲ καὶ τὰς νήσους· τὸ γὰρ πέλαγος πλοίοις διαπορθμεύοντες ταύταις ἐγκαθωρμίζοντο. Οἱ δὲ υἱοὶ τοῦ Χὰμ, τὴν ἀπὸ Συρίας, καὶ Ἀμμανοῦ, καὶ Λιβάνου τῶν ὀρέων γῆν κατέσχον, ὅσα πρὸς θάλασσαν αὐτὴν τέτραπτο καταλαβόντες, καὶ τὰ μέχρι τοῦ Ὠκεανοῦ ἐξιδιωσάμενοι. Καὶ ἐνίων μὲν παντελῶς αἱ προσηγορίαι ἠμείφθησαν, ἐνίων δὲ εἰς ἑτέρας ἐνημείφθη δυσεπιγνώστους· ὀλίγων δὲ ἔτι αἱ ὀνομασίαι ἀκέραιοι σώζονται. Εἰσὶ δὲ υἱοὶ τοῦ Χὰμ οἵδε· Χοῦς, ἐξ οὗ Χουσαῖοι, οἱ νῦν Αἰθίοπες· Μεστρὲμ, ἐξ οὗ Μεστραῖοι, οἱ νῦν Αἰγύπτιοι· Φοὺτ, Φουτοὶ, οἱ νῦν Λίβυες, καὶ ἔτι τοῦ δεῦρο ὁ παρὰ Μαύροις ποταμὸς καὶ ἡ σύνεγγυς χώρα αὐτοῦ Φουτοὶ καλοῦνται. Ἐκλήθησαν δὲ Λίβυες τὸ ἔθνος, καὶ ἡ χώρα ἑνὸς τῶν ἀπὸ Μεστρὼν υἱῶν ὀνόματι Λίβυος βασιλεύσαντος αὐτῶν. Τῷ δὲ Χοῦς ἐγένοντο υἱοὶ ἑπτά· Σαβὰτ, ἀφ' οὗ Σαβάκιοι, οἵτινες ἄχρι τοῦ δεῦρο τὴν ὀνομασίαν ἅμα τῇ χώρᾳ σώζουσιν· Εὐιλὰτ, ἐξ οὗ Εὐιλαῖοι, οἱ νῦν γε Τοῦλοι· Σαβὰθ, ἐξ οὗ Σαβαθηνοὶ, οἱ νῦν Ἀστάβαροι· Ῥεγμαρὰ, ἐξ οὗ Ἀλλαῖοι, οἱ ἔτι καὶ νῦν ταύτην τὴν κλῆσιν ἔχουσιν· Ἰουδαδὰν, ἐξ οὗ Ἰουδαδαῖοι, Αἰθιοπικὸν ἔθνος ὁμώνυμον μέχρι νῦν τῷ προπάτορι· Σεβεκαθὰ, ἐξ οὗ Σαβακτηνοὶ, οἳ καὶ αὐτοὶ ὁμώνυμοι· Νεβρὼδ οὗτος, μείνας ἐν τῇ Βαβυλῶνι, πρῶτος αὐτοῖς ἐτυράννησεν. Μεστρὲμ υἱοὶ ὀκτὼ, οἵτινες τὴν ἀπὸ Γάζης καὶ ἕως Αἴγυπτον κατέσχον γῆν. Τοῦ δὲ Φιλιστιεὶμ ἡ χώρα τότε κατεῖχεν ἕως τινὸς τὴν ὁμωνυμίαν, ὕστερον δὲ ἐκλήθη Παλαιστίνη.
