the rest with the patriarch, to whom indeed he, by adhering, would treat the others similarly. Thus, therefore, in addition to the former ones, the rest also having been condemned in their absence, having this advantage of not being deposed with dishonor, those who were deposing having shown sympathy in this one thing, (18) in the month of Pyantion, during which every tree and everything sprouting from the earth had completely lost its leaves, drops of blood were borne from heaven, as many as fell to the earth, being covered over by the soil, affording no perception to anyone, but as many as were sprinkled on leaves or rocks or garments, staining what received them, showing their nature precisely. For me, therefore, to assert without a doubt that those things also happened because of these, there is no certain conviction; but for one who is narrating to speak of these things too, whether they happened for the sake of those things or for others, does not seem, I think, out of tune. Having however set up others 55 in the churches in opposition, they directed the affairs of the church as they were in a methodical way, acting like tyrants as it were in most of these things and over the imperial clemency, with one and only man squandering everything, of the common concord and order, as they had promised.
(19) They demanded then also from the Augusta Theodora a statement of faith, a written repudiation of the things that happened yesterday, and an assurance never to make inquiry concerning her husband, on the condition that he would be buried with psalmody; and the prize for this was that in the church, they say, she would be commemorated royally with her son. And they demanded from Athanasius of Alexandria, agreement concerning those who had been deposed, and a repudiation by him also of what had been done, since he had previously shared in the aforesaid charges, so that he too, obviously, having secured the same terms, might be commemorated with the patriarchs in the diptychs. For into Theodosios Prinkips of Antioch a secret fear fell lest they do something ill-advised to him, but open 56 ly he was disdainful and looked down on what was being done. Assuredly therefore having sent, without the emperor's knowledge, he resigned in Syria and yielded the throne to another; for Tripolis was still safe, and Ptolemais in Syria was safe, and Beirut and Sidon and Tyre and the coastal regions survived, the Italian rule being stronger than that of the Aethiopians. But those of that church, having accepted the resignation, by a common vote appoint Arsenios of Hagiosymeon, a man altogether holy and venerable, whom indeed for a time those here, having accepted him, commemorated him with the holy diptychs, but later, an accusation having arisen from a rumor that came that having thus made an agreement with the king of Armenia he had participated in the schism concerning the church, waiting for nothing to examine what had happened together, they easily remove his name. But since he did not survive even for a short time (for perhaps he would even have responded to the accusation, if he had survived) the high priests, being of two minds, those in Cilicia appoint Dionysios of Pompeiopolis, while those around Syria appoint Kyrillos of Tyre; and as Dionysios was being shaken Kyrillos is preferred over him. The one from Alexandria who was present here, at any rate, was neither pained by not being commemorated with the others (for the things that had happened to the many concealed his own personal sorrow) nor indeed did the being deemed worthy to share 57 with them in the commemoration warm him; for the things that had been done contrary to what was fitting, in which he was to have communion, resulted in shared shame.
20. But with these matters still pending, the emperor, since Terter, whom the account showed to be king of the Bulgarians after Asan had departed from there, had sent and made a request concerning his wife (for he had rejected the sister of Asan as being unlawfully joined to him, and for the other reason that the church there did not accept him in the holy rites, since he had, as he said, acted unlawfully concerning his spouse), with Terter communicating these things and welcoming future treaties, the emperor sent and brought the woman from Nicaea (for she was also being kept there) and releases her to Terter, on the condition that he too would immediately send the sister of Asan, which indeed also happened. and

Ἀλλὰ τούτων ἀνηρτημένων καὶ ἔτι ὁ βασιλεὺς τοῦ Τερτερῆ, ὃν δὴ βασιλέα Βουλγάρων ὁ λόγος ἐδείκνυ τοῦ Ἀσὰν ἐκεῖθεν ἀναχωρήσαντος, πέμψαντος καὶ ἀξιοῦντος περὶ τῆς γυ ναικὸς (τὴν γὰρ τοῦ Ἀσὰν αὐταδέλφην ὡς παρανόμως συζευχθεῖ σαν ἀπέστεργε, καὶ ἄλλως ὅτι καὶ τῆς ἐκεῖ ἐκκλησίας μὴ παρα δεχομένης αὐτὸν ἐν ἁγιασμοῖς, ὡς ἔλεγε, περὶ τὴν σύζυγον ἀνο μήσαντα) ταῦτα τοῦ Τερτερῆ διαμηνυομένου καὶ τὰς ἐσαῦθις ἀγα πῶντος σπονδάς, ἀποστείλας ὁ βασιλεὺς καὶ ἀγαγὼν τὴν γυναῖκα Νικαίαθεν (ἐκεῖ γὰρ καὶ συνετηρεῖτο) ἀπολύει πρὸς τὸν Τερτερῆν, πέμψοντα κἀκεῖνον αὐτίκα τὴν τοῦ Ἀσὰν ἀδελφήν, ὃ δὴ καὶ γέ γονε. καὶ
