For what does it say? "He who looks at a woman with lust has already committed adultery with her in his heart". Do you see how he who looks at someone's face with desire is judged an adulterer? So know for certain, O man, that he who is overcome by the desire for money is judged a lover of money, even if he possesses nothing else at all, and he who craves many and expensive foods is a glutton, even if due to poverty he is nourished only by bread and water, and a fornicator is he who for a long time (54) pairs up with his thoughts and is defiled, even if he never sees a human face. So also he who says in his heart: "This was done badly and that happened unreasonably" and: "Why did this happen? And why did that not happen?" let him not be deceived, he will be a slanderer and as one who condemns he will be condemned, even if he does not utter a word from his mouth, nor anyone hears his voice.
Do not be deceived, my brothers, God is a lover of mankind and merciful and compassionate, and I, testifying, confess and by his compassion I trust to be saved. But know that those who do not repent and who do not keep his commandments with all exactness and much fear, it will profit them nothing, but rather he will punish them worse than the unbelieving and unbaptized gentiles. Do not be deceived, O brothers, nor let any of the sins seem small to you and be despised by us as not causing so much harm to our souls. For conscientious servants do not know the difference between a small and a great sin, but even if they stumble in a glance or a thought or a word, they are disposed as having fallen from the love of God, which I am persuaded is also true. For he who thinks some small thing outside the divine will and does not immediately, having driven out the assault of the thought, become repentant, but having accepted it holds on to the thought, it is reckoned to him as sin even if in ignorance he thinks this to be evil. For when the law came, that is the teaching of the holy Scriptures, the evil that was held in ignorance came to life and sin was (55) found to be in me, and I became dead and a stranger to the good.
Therefore it is necessary to discern well all the thoughts that come upon us and to set against them the testimonies from the God-inspired Scriptures and from the teaching of the spiritual and holy fathers and, if we find them to be in harmony with these and equivalent, to hold on to them with all our strength and to put them into practice with confidence; but those not agreeing with the word of truth, to send them away from ourselves with much anger, as it is written: "Be angry and do not sin". For as a defilement and a sting of death, so one must flee the invasion that comes from passionate thoughts. Therefore, we have need of much sobriety, much diligence, much searching of the divine Scriptures. For showing us the benefit from them the Savior said: "Search the Scriptures". Search and with much accuracy and faith hold fast to what is said, so that by knowing accurately from the divine Scriptures the will of God, you may be able to distinguish without fail the good from the worse and not obey every spirit, nor be carried along by harmful thoughts. Be fully assured, my brothers, that nothing is so easy for us to be saved as to follow the divine commandments of the Savior. Nevertheless, however, we need many tears, much fear, much patience and persistent prayer, so that the power of even one of the Lord's sayings (56) may be revealed to us, that we may know the great mystery hidden in few words and lay down our souls even to death and for one iota of the commandments of God. For the word of God is like a two-edged sword, cutting off and
