It is necessary, therefore, to discern well all the thoughts that come upon us and to set against them the testimonies from the divinely inspired Scriptures and from the teaching of the spiritual and holy fathers and, if we find them to be in accord with and of equal value to these, we should hold on to them with all our strength and confidently put them into practice; but those not in harmony with the word of truth, we should send them away from ourselves with great anger, as it is written: "Be angry and do not sin." For as a defilement and the sting of death, so must we flee the invasion that arises from passionate thoughts. We have need, therefore, of much watchfulness, much diligence, much searching of the divine Scriptures. For the Savior, showing us the benefit from them, said: "Search the Scriptures." Search and with much exactness and faith hold fast to what is said, so that knowing precisely from the divine Scriptures the will of God, you may be able to discern the good from the worse without stumbling, and not obey every spirit, nor be carried away by harmful thoughts. Be fully assured, my brothers, that nothing is so conducive to our being saved as to follow the divine commandments of the Savior. Nevertheless, however, we need many tears, much fear, much patience and persistent prayer, so that the power of even one of the Lord's sayings (56) may be revealed to us, that we may know the great mystery hidden in few words and lay down our souls even unto death for one tittle of the commandments of God. For the word of God is like a two-edged sword, cutting off and separating the soul from every bodily desire and sensation; and not only this, but it also becomes like a burning fire, arousing the eagerness of our soul and making us despise all the painful things of life and consider every trial that comes as a joy, and to desire and embrace death, which is terrible to other men, as life and the harbinger of life.
Therefore, I beseech you, let us at last become sober, my brothers, and stirring up one another by the exhortation of the word to zeal and imitation of the good, let us run with diligence, let us hasten eagerly and with burning zeal let us be separated by passionlessness from the world, let us be united by humility to the saints of old; let us put off the old man by the cutting off of the earthly will and by the mortification of the earthy mindset, let us put on the new Adam, Jesus Christ, through pure and immaterial prayer, having cleansed ourselves with perpetual tears. Hour by hour and day by day let us cause ourselves to be renewed through repentance, so that we may be taught to make war and to wrestle with the enemy demons who are always at war with us. For he who has not yet acquired the aforesaid weapons cannot stand in time of war, but rather is wounded at every hour. (57) For being naked of those weapons, he cannot live in peace and freedom, because the war within ourselves is not like the external wars and weapons, but this one is much more terrible than that. For men fighting against men, sometimes make war with weapons, and at other times withdraw and cease, and they cast down their arms and partake of sleep and food with all security, and they often enclose themselves in fortifications and some entrust the watch to others, whence also one who has resorted to flight has been saved, and one who has been captured has perhaps not been put to death, but having exchanged his freedom for a glorious servitude, he has appeared more distinguished and has become richer. But here it is not so, but the war is perpetual and it is perpetually necessary for the soldiers of Christ to be clothed with their own weapons. For it is not possible for this war to cease by night or by day or in the twinkling of an eye, but even while we are eating and drinking and sleeping and doing anything whatsoever, we find ourselves in the heat of the battle. For we have incorporeal enemies, who even before our face

Χρή τοίνυν πάντας τούς ἐπερχομένους ἡμῖν λογισμούς διακρίνειν καλῶς καί ἀντιπαρατιθέναι αὐτοῖς τάς μαρτυρίας ἐκ τῶν θεοπνεύστων Γραφῶν καί ἀπό τῆς διδασκαλίας τῶν πνευματικῶν καί ἁγίων πατέρων καί, εἰ μέν συνᾴδοντας ταύταις καί ἰσοδυναμοῦντας εὑρίσκομεν αὐτούς, πάσῃ δυνάμει τούτους κρατεῖν καί εἰς ἔργον θαρροῦντας ἐξάγειν· μή συμφωνοῦντας δέ τῷ λόγῳ τῆς ἀληθείας, μετ᾿ ὀργῆς πολλῆς αὐτούς ἐξ ἑαυτῶν ἀποπέμπεσθαι, καθά γέγραπται· "Ὀργίζεσθε καί μή ἁμαρτάνετε". Ὡς γάρ μίασμα καί θανάτου κέντρον, οὕτως ἐκφεύγειν δεῖ τήν ἐγγινομένην ἐκ τῶν ἐμπαθῶν λογισμῶν εἰσβολήν. Πολλῆς οὖν ἡμῖν χρεία τῆς νήψεως, πολλῆς τῆς σπουδῆς, πολλῆς τῆς τῶν θείων Γραφῶν ἐρεύνης. Τήν γάρ ἐξ αὐτῶν ὠφέλειαν ἐμφαίνων ἡμῖν ὁ Σωτήρ ἔλεγεν· "Ἐρευνᾶτε τάς Γραφάς". Ἐρευνᾶτε καί μετά πολλῆς ἀκριβείας καί πίστεως κατέχετε τά λεγόμενα, ὅπως ἀκριβῶς ἐκ τῶν θείων Γραφῶν ἐπιστάμενοι τό τοῦ Θεοῦ θέλημα, δύνησθε τό καλόν διακρίνειν ἀπταίστως ἀπό τοῦ χείρονος καί μή παντί πνεύματι ὑπακούειν, μηδέ τοῖς βλαβεροῖς συμπεριφέρεσθαι λογισμοῖς. Πληροφορήθητε, ἀδελφοί μου, ὅτι οὐδέν οὕτως εὔκολον εἰς τό σωθῆναι ἡμᾶς ὡς τό ἐπακολουθεῖν τοῖς τοῦ Σωτῆρος θείοις προστάγμασι. Πλήν ὅμως πολλῶν ἡμῖν δεῖ τῶν δακρύων, πολλοῦ τοῦ φόβου, πολλῆς τῆς ὑπομονῆς καί ἐπιμόνου εὐχῆς, ἵνα κἄν ἑνός δεσποτικοῦ ῥήματος (56) δύναμις ἀποκαλυφθῇ ἡμῖν, ὅπως γνῶμεν τό ἐν μικροῖς λόγοις κεκρυμμένον μέγα μυστήριον καί μέχρι θανάτου καί ὑπέρ μιᾶς κεραίας τῶν ἐντολῶν τοῦ Θεοῦ τάς ψυχάς ἡμῶν θήσωμεν. Ὁ γάρ τοῦ Θεοῦ λόγος ὡς μάχαιρα δίστομός ἐστιν, ἀποτέμνουσα καί ἀποχωρίζουσα τήν ψυχήν ἀπό πάσης σωματικῆς ἐπιθυμίας τε καί αἰσθήσεως· οὐ μόνον δέ ἀλλά καί ὡς πῦρ φλέγον γίνεται, διεγείρων ἡμῶν τό πρόθυμον τῆς ψυχῆς καί ποιῶν ἡμᾶς τοῦ καταφρονεῖν πάντων τῶν λυπηρῶν τοῦ βίου καί ἡγεῖσθαι χαράν πάντα πειρασμόν ἐπερχόμενον, καί τόν φοβερόν τοῖς ἄλλοις ἀνθρώποις θάνατον, ὡς ζωήν καί ζωῆς πρόξενον, ἐπιθυμεῖν καί ἀσπάζεσθαι.
∆ιό, παρακαλῶ, ἀνανήψωμέν ποτε, ἀδελφοί μου, καί ἀλλήλους διεγείροντες, τῇ παρακλήσει τοῦ λόγου, πρός ζῆλον καί μίμησιν τοῦ καλοῦ, δράμωμεν σπουδαίως, σπεύσωμεν προθύμως καί ζεούσῃ τῇ προθυμίᾳ χωρισθῶμεν τῆ ἀπροσπαθείᾳ τοῦ κόσμου, ἑνωθῶμεν τῇ ταπεινώσει τοῖς ἀπ᾿ αἰῶνος ἁγίοις· ἀποδυσώμεθα τόν παλαιόν ἄνθρωπον τῇ ἐκκοπῇ τοῦ γεώδους θελήματος καί τῇ νεκρώσει τοῦ χοϊκοῦ φρονήματος, ἐνδυσώμεθα τόν νέον Ἀδάμ, Ἰησοῦν Χριστόν, διά τῆς καθαρᾶς καί ἀῢλου προσευχῆς, τοῖς διηνεκέσι δάκρυσιν ἀποσμήξαντες ἑαυτούς. Ὥραν καθ᾿ ὥραν καί ἡμέραν καθ᾿ ἡμέραν ἀνακαινίζεσθαι ποιήσωμεν ἑαυτούς διά μετανοίας, ἵνα καί πολεμεῖν διδαχθῶμεν καί παλαίειν τοῖς ἀεί πολεμοῦσιν ἡμῖν ἐχθροῖς δαίμοσιν. Ὁ γάρ τά εἰρημένα ὅπλα μηδέπω κτησάμενος, ἐν καιρῷ πολέμου στῆναι οὐ δύναται, μᾶλλον δέ ἐν πάσῃ ὥρᾳ τιτρώσκεται. (57) Γυμνός γάρ ὑπάρχων τῶν ὅπλων ἐκείνων, ἐν εἰρήνῃ καί ἐλευθερίᾳ διάγειν οὐ δύναται, ἐπειδή οὐχ ὁμοίως τῶν ἔξω πολέμων καί ὅπλων καί ὁ ἐν ἡμῖν αὐτοῖς πόλεμος, ἀλλά πολύ ἐκείνου φρικωδέστερος οὗτος. Ἄνθρωποι γάρ πρός ἀνθρώπους μαχόμενοι, ποτέ μέν πολεμοῦσι μετά τῶν ὅπλων, ποτέ δέ ὑπαναχωροῦσι καί παύονται, καί ἄρματα ῥίπτουσι καί ὕπνου μεταλαμβάνουσι καί τροφῆς μετά ἀδείας ἁπάσης, καί ὀχυρώμασι πολλάκις ἑαυτούς περικλείουσι καί ἄλλοι ἀντ᾿ἄλλων τήν φυλακήν ἐμπιστεύονται, ὅθεν καί φυγῇ τις χρησάμενος σέσωσται, καί κρατηθείς ἴσως οὐ τεθανάτωται, ἀλλά τήν ἐλευθερίαν περιδόξῳ δουλείᾳ ἀνταλλαξάμενος, περιφανέστερος ὤφθη καί μᾶλλον ἐπλούτησεν. Ἐνταῦθα δέ οὐχ οὕτως, ἀλλά διηνεκής τυγχάνει ὁ πόλεμος καί διηνεκῶς ἀνάγκη περιβεβλῆσθαι τοῖς τοῦ Χριστοῦ στρατώταις τά ἑαυτῶν ὅπλα. Οὐκ ἔνι γάρ ἐν νυκτί ἤ ἐν ἡμέρᾳ ἤ ἐν μιᾷ καιροῦ ῥοπῇ τοῦτον τόν πόλεμον παύσασθαι, ἀλλά καί ἐσθιόντων ἡμῶν και πινόντων καί κοιμωμένων καί ὁτιοῦν ἐργαζομένων, ἐν τῇ ἀκμῇ τῆς μάχης τυγχάνομεν. Ἀσάρκους γάρ ἔχομεν ἐχθρούς, οἵτινες καί κατά πρόσωπον ἡμῶν
