XXVI. The bishop, he is the minister of the word, the keeper of knowledge, the mediator between God and you in the several parts of your divine worship. He is the teacher of piety; and, next after God, he is your father, who has begotten you again to the adoption of sons by water and the Spirit. He is your ruler and governor; he is your king and potentate; he is, next after God, your earthly god, who has a right to be honoured by you. For concerning him, and such as he, it is that God pronounces, “I have said, Ye are gods; and ye are all children of the Most High.” 143 Ps. lxxxii. 6. And, “Ye shall not speak evil of the gods.” 144 Ex. xxii. 28. For let the bishop preside over you as one honoured with the authority of God, which he is to exercise over the clergy, and by which he is to govern all the people. But let the deacon minister to him, as Christ does to His Father; 145 The V. mss. read, “as the powers do to God,” which, Ültzen remarks, is an orthodox correction of an Arian opinion. and let him serve him unblameably in all things, as Christ does nothing of Himself, but does always those things that please His Father. Let also the deaconess be honoured by you in the place of the Holy Ghost, and not do or say anything without the deacon; as neither does the Comforter say or do anything of Himself, but gives glory to Christ by waiting for His pleasure. And as we cannot believe on Christ without the teaching of the Spirit, so let not any woman address herself to the deacon or bishop without the deaconess. Let the presbyters be esteemed by you to represent us the apostles, and let them be the teachers of divine knowledge; since our Lord, when He sent us, said, “Go ye, and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you.” 146 Matt. xxviii. 19. Let the widows and orphans be esteemed as representing the altar of burnt-offering; and let the virgins be honoured as representing the altar of incense, and the incense itself.
[26] Ἀκούσατε ταῦτα καὶ ὑμεῖς, οἱ λαϊκοί, ἡ ἐκλεκτὴ Ἐκκλησία τοῦ Θεοῦ: καὶ γὰρ ὁ λαὸς πρότερον Θεοῦ λαὸς καὶ ἔθνος ἅγιον ὠνομάζετο, καὶ ὑμεῖς οὖν ἐστὲ ἁγία ἱερὰ Ἐκκλησία τοῦ Θεοῦ ἀπογεγραμμένη ἐν οὐρανῷ, βασίλειον ἱεράτευμα, ἔθνος ἅγιον, λαὸς εἰς περιποίησιν, νύμφη κεκαλλωπισμένη Κυρίῳ τῷ Θεῷ: Ἐκκλησία μεγάλη, Ἐκκλησία πιστή: ἃ πρότερον ἐρρέθη, νῦν ἐνωτίζου: ἀφαιρέματα καὶ δεκάται καὶ ἀπαρχαὶ τῷ ἀρχιερεῖ Χριστῷ καὶ τοῖς λειτουργοῦσιν αὐτῷ, δεκάται σωτηρίου, ἀρχὴ ὀνόματος Ἰησοῦ. Ἄκουε, ἱερὰ καθολικὴ Ἐκκλησία, ἡ τὴν δεκάπληγον πεφευγυῖα καὶ τὴν δεκάλογον εἰληφυῖα καὶ τὸν νόμον μεμαθηκυῖα καὶ τὴν πίστιν κεκρατηκυῖα καὶ ἐπὶ τὸν Κύριον Ἰησοῦν πεπιστευκυῖα καὶ τὴν δεκάδα ἐγνωκυῖα καὶ ἐπὶ τὸ ἰῶτα, ὅπερ ἐστὶν ἀρχὴ ὀνόματος Ἰησοῦ, πεπιστευκυῖα καὶ τὸ ὄνομα αὐτοῦ ὀνομαζομένη καὶ ἐπὶ τῇ τελειώσει τῆς δόξης αὐτοῦ ἐστηριγμένη: αἱ τότε θυσίαι νῦν εὐχαὶ καὶ δεήσεις καὶ εὐχαριστίαι, αἱ τότε ἀπαρχαὶ καὶ δεκάται καὶ ἀφαιρέματα καὶ δῶρα νῦν προσφοραὶ αἱ διὰ τῶν ὁσίων ἐπισκόπων προσφερόμεναι Κυρίῳ τῷ Θεῷ διὰ Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ τοῦ ὑπὲρ αὐτῶν ἀποθανόντος. Περὶ γὰρ τούτου καὶ τῶν ὁμοίων αὐτοῦ ὁ Θεὸς ἔλεγεν: »Ἐγὼ εἶπα: θεοί ἐστε καὶ υἱοὶ Ὑψίστου πάντες«, καί: »Θεοὺς τοῦ λαοῦ σου οὐ κακολογήσεις.« Ὁ μὲν οὖν ἐπίσκοπος προκαθεζέσθω ὑμῶν ὡς Θεοῦ ἀξίᾳ τετιμημένος, ᾗ κρατεῖ τοῦ κλήρου καὶ τοῦ λαοῦ παντὸς ἄρχει. Ὁ δὲ διάκονος τούτῳ παριστάσθω ὡς ὁ Χριστὸς τῷ Πατρί, καὶ λειτουργείτω αὐτῷ ἐν πᾶσιν ἀμέμπτως, ὡς ὁ Χριστός, ἀφ' ἑαυτοῦ ποιῶν οὐδέν, τὰ ἀρεστὰ ποιεῖ τῷ Πατρὶ πάντοτε. Ἡ δὲ διάκονος εἰς τύπον τοῦ ἁγίου Πνεύματος τετιμήσθω ὑμῖν, μηδὲν ἄνευ τοῦ διακόνου φθεγγομένη ἢ πράττουσα, ὡς οὐδὲ ὁ παράκλητος ἀφ' ἑαυτοῦ τι ποιεῖ ἢ λαλεῖ, ἀλλὰ δοξάζων τὸν Χριστὸν περιμένει τὸ ἐκείνου θέλημα: καὶ ὡς οὐκ ἔστιν εἰς τὸν Χριστὸν πιστεῦσαι ἄνευ τῆς τοῦ Πνεύματος διδασκαλίας, οὕτως ἄνευ τῆς διακόνου μηδεμία προσίτω γυνὴ τῷ διακόνῳ ἢ τῷ ἐπισκόπῳ. Οἵ τε πρεσβύτεροι εἰς τύπον ἡμῶν τῶν ἀποστόλων ὑμῖν νενομίσθωσαν: διδάσκαλοι ἔστωσαν θεογνωσίας, ἐπειδὴ καὶ ὁ Κύριος ἡμᾶς ἀποστέλλων ἔλεγεν: »Πορευθέντες μαθητεύσατε πάντα τὰ ἔθνη, βαπτίζοντες αὐτοὺς εἰς τὸ ὄνομα τοῦ Πατρὸς καὶ τοῦ Υἱοῦ καὶ τοῦ ἁγίου Πνεύματος, διδάσκοντες αὐτοὺς τηρεῖν πάντα, ὅσα ἐνετειλάμην ὑμῖν.« Αἵ τε χῆραι καὶ οἱ ὀρφανοὶ εἰς τύπον τοῦ θυσιαστηρίου λελογίσθωσαν ὑμῖν: αἵ τε παρθένοι εἰς τύπον τοῦ θυμιατηρίου τετιμήσθωσαν καὶ τοῦ θυμιάματος.
