The aforementioned vine covered the mountains with its shadow, because it surpassed all height and all power above the earth, and with the extensions of its boughs the cedars of God, because it was supported by divine powers and stretched as far as the sea and the river. Because the boundaries of the land of Judaea are also thus called by God: From the desert to the Euphrates and from the Red Sea to the Sea of the Philistines. The vine, therefore, which you yourself, it says, brought out of Egypt and transplanted, which you made so conspicuous and extended so far, why did you allow it to be thus stripped of its security and harvested by those passing by?
133 Ps 80 arg. Trumpets begin the winepresses according to the law. On the new moon indeed
of the seventh month he commanded a blowing of trumpets, and on the fifteenth the feast of tabernacles. This was of the harvest of fruits at the end of the year in the gathering of the works from the field, as is shown in Exodus. And for one considering the law spiritually, the blowing of trumpets would be a declaration of the trumpets coming from heaven, while the fast appointed for atonement on the tenth of the same month would be a foretelling of that which is said by the Lord: Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted. For the law made the fast preparatory for the rest of the tabernacles and the gladness in it, and the humility in it, having first introduced the trumpets which declare the fear of the coming of the judge from heaven. With these pre-announcing the coming judgment, the humility for atonement follows, and thus the feast for rest occurs. Let the psalm sung for the winepresses also be pertinent to the time of the feast according to the custom of the law and for this reason mention trumpets at the beginning as a prelude to the feast of tabernacles. But let it signify: the inscription declares the end concerning which it is also sung; when God gathers all fruits, and gives eternal tabernacles to his own. For in that end, good things are restored to those who are saved and the salvation from the present evils concerning which the aforementioned psalms made their supplications to God. [And what follows is in accordance with what precedes it.] 134 Ps 80,7 Of burdens, that is, of the bearing of loads; for those serving in the labors of brickmaking carry the clay on their backs, casting it out with a basket. Therefore their back, it says, he removed from burdens, that is, he freed them from the loads.
135 Ps 82,4 [Others said that the mind of God was hidden and the
mysteries.] 136 Ps 83 arg. [But it should be known that some have understood the psalm to have been spoken from the perspective of those in Babylon
longing to see Jerusalem and the temple in it and the altar.] 137 Ps 83,5 [But the rest, according to the history, have understood the temple in Jerusalem in a physical sense.] 138 Ps 83,10 It brings the good will of God and the perpetual hearing of prayers concerning which it is said in the prophecy of Isaiah, "While they are still speaking, I will say, 'Behold, I am here,'" when we shall enjoy the honor through Christ, the Father looking upon us thus as upon the face of the Son, because Christ will be in us.
139 Ps 84,11 Mercy and truth have met, when with the mercy through which the nations
are called, the truth through which Israel will be brought back also comes together; For the nations are called for the sake of mercy, as the apostle says, but Israel for the sake of God's truth, so that the promises to the fathers might be confirmed. Now therefore their rejection

σκιᾷ μὲν τὰ ὄρη ἐκάλυψεν ἡ προειρημένη ἄμπελος διὰ τὸ πᾶν ὕψος καὶ πᾶσαν δύναμιν τὴν ὑπὲρ γῆς ὑπερβαλέσθαι, ταῖς δὲ τῶν ἀκρεμόνων ἐκτάσεσι τὰς κέδρους τοῦ θεοῦ διὰ τὸ ταῖς θείαις δυνάμεσιν ὑπερείδεσθαι διήκειν τε ἕως θαλάσσης καὶ ποταμοῦ. διότι καὶ ὅρια τῆς χώρας τῆς Ἰουδαϊκῆς οὕτως ὑπὸ θεοῦ καλεῖται· Ἀπὸ ἐρήμου ἕως Εὐφράτου καὶ ἀπὸ θαλάσσης ἐρυθρᾶς ἕως θαλάσσης Φυλιστιείμ. ἣν οὖν αὐτός, φησίν, ἐξήγαγες ἐξ Αἰγύπτου καὶ μεταφύτευσας ἄμπελον, ἣν οὕτως ἐμφανῆ κατέστησας καὶ εἰς τοσοῦτον ἐξέτεινας, διὰ τί περιεῖδες οὕτως ἀπογυμνωθεῖσαν τῆς ἀσφαλείας καὶ τρυγωμένην ὑπὸ τῶν παριόντων;
133 Ps 80 arg.
