Jesus calls together the Israelites, and reminds them of God's benefactions, and exhorts them to keep the law, and foretells the evils that would befall them if they did not keep it, and dies. Eleazar the priest also dies, and Phinehas his son served as priest in his place. And the Israelites practiced idolatry, and were delivered to Eglon king of Moab, and he ruled over them for eighteen years. Synopsis of Judges. Here it is recorded which cities the Israelites took, and which they left to be tributary to them. For, having grown soft toward the toils of war, they transgressed the command of God, which ordered all to be utterly and completely destroyed. An angel came from the Lord to the Israelites, and rebuked their transgression. 'For it was necessary,' he said, 'that all be destroyed, but you even made covenants with them; for this reason God will not destroy the remaining nations.' When they heard these things, they wept with one accord, and the place was called Weeping. And they continually transgressed and practiced idolatry, and were delivered to their enemies, and were freed from slavery, and again they persisted in the same evils. They were delivered to Chushan-Rishathaim king of Syria for 8 years, and the Lord saved them through Othniel the judge. And they were delivered to Eglon king of Moab, and they cried out to God, and he raised up for them Ehud, who by deceit killed Eglon and Moab. After him judged Shamgar, Deborah, a prophetess. While the Israelites were enslaved to the king of Canaan, Deborah commands Barak to lead the war. But he would not tolerate it, unless she also went out with him; and the woman went out with him. And when the war took place, the enemies flee, and the general of Jabin, Sisera, coming to 56.339 a certain woman named Jael, asked for a drink; and she gave him milk instead of water. And when he fell asleep after drinking, the woman took a tent peg and drove it through his temple. And thus Sisera died; and Barak, coming upon him, saw him dead. Then Deborah sang a victory song. Again the Israelites are delivered into the hands of Midian; for they continually provoked God. Then an angel appeared to Gideon, and urged him to war. Then the Lord commands him to sacrifice his father's fatted calf, and to offer a whole burnt offering, and to tear down the altar of Baal. He did so, and offered a whole burnt offering to God. And Gideon, also called Jerubbaal, asks for the sign that was done upon the fleece. And he is commanded to send away the entire army, but to keep only three hundred. And he did so, and joining battle with torches and trumpets, he took the enemies. Then were slain Oreb and Zeeb the princes of Midian, and Zebah and Zalmunna the kings. When Gideon died, he left behind seventy sons, and one from a concubine, Abimelech. This man, having killed the seventy, seized the kingdom; and not long after he paid the penalty for fratricide. For having approached a certain city in war, his head was crushed by a piece of a millstone from a woman, and he died. After Abimelech judged Tola, after Tola Jair. And the sons of Israel provoked God, and were delivered into the hands of Ammon. Then Jephthah, being the son of a harlot, and having been driven out of his father's house by his brothers, the leaders of the people ask to lead the war against the sons of Ammon, and they give him the command. And being persuaded, and first having sent an embassy to the king of the sons of Ammon, when he did not persuade him, having vowed to God to sacrifice the first to meet him if he returned from the war, joining battle with the enemies and conquering, he sacrifices his daughter; for she was the first to meet him. Again the Israelites provoked God, and were delivered into the hands of the foreigners. Then Samson is born, and seeing a woman in Timnah, he loved her, and wished to take her according to the law of marriage. But his parents at first forbade it because she was a foreigner; but when they saw him insistent, they did not oppose. And when he was going away to speak about her, a lion met him, and he killed it
