And he: I am not joking, but I mourn my life preserved until now, that I might have experience of such phantoms.

Epiphanius the patrician says: God knows, he does well to make a joke of them, if they are not true.

After whom the sakellarios again said to him with anger: Do all simply lie, and you alone tell the truth? And answering, the servant of God said, weeping with his word: You have the authority, God permitting, both to give life and to put to death; but if these men tell the truth, then Satan is God by nature. But if he is not, as indeed he is not, neither have these men told the truth. For may I not be deemed worthy to behold with Christians the epiphany of the superessential God, both Poet and Demiurge, and Creator, and Provider, and Judge, and Savior of all, if I ever recounted such a dream, or heard another recount it, except at this hour from the lord Sergius, the imperial chamberlain.

3 . Then they bring forward a third slanderer, Theodore the 15Γ_078 son

of John, called Candidatus, surnamed Chila, now son-in-law of the lord Plato the patrician, saying: That when a conversation occurred between us in Rome about the emperor, he mocked what was being said, making grimaces and pouting. To whom the servant of God said: I never spoke with you, except once with the most holy presbyter, the lord Theocharistus, the brother of the exarch, concerning the primicerius, having been urged by letters about this. And if I am found to be lying, I accept my punishment.

4 . And after this man, they bring a fourth, Gregory the son of Photeinus, saying,

that I went to the cell of Abba Maximus in Rome, and when I said, that the emperor is also a priest, Abba Anastasius his disciple said: May he not be deemed worthy to be a priest. Immediately the servant of God says to him: Fear God, lord Gregory, my fellow servant uttered absolutely nothing in the discussion about these things. And 0116 he throws himself to the ground, saying to the senate: Bear with your servant, and I will say everything as it was spoken, and he will correct me if I lie. My lord Gregory here, having come to Rome, saw fit to come to the cell of your servant; upon seeing whom, as is my custom, I threw myself to the ground, and did obeisance to him; and I greeted him, and said to him after he had sat down: What is the reason for the longed-for presence of my master? And he said: Our good and God-supported master, caring for the peace of the holy Churches of God, has issued a command to the God-honored pope, also sending an 15Γ_080 offering to Saint Peter, urging him to be united with the prelate of Constantinople; which things his pious majesty deigned to be sent through my mediocrity. And I said: Glory to God who has made you worthy of such a ministry. However, in what manner has his God-crowned serenity commanded the union to take place? He spoke again: If you know. And you said: On the basis of the Typos. And I said: Impossible, I think, this has become; for the Romans do not tolerate the light-bearing pronouncements of the holy Fathers to be annulled along with the pronouncements of the impure heretics; or for the truth to be extinguished along with falsehood; or for the light to be obliterated along with darkness. For there will be nothing for us
